2 HP All-in-One overview The HP Deskjet F4100 All-in-On e series is a versatile device that g ives you easy-to-use copying, scanning, and pri nting. Copy The HP All-in-One allows you to prod uce high-qual ity color and black- and-white copi es on a variety of paper types.

Label Icon Name and Description When the HP All-in-One is off, a minimal amount of power is still used by the device. To completely disconnect the power supply to the HP All-in-One, turn the device off, and then unplug the power cord.
Label Icon Name and Description 9 Scan : Starts scanning the or iginal currently on the glass. The Scan command is ignored if the HP All-in-One is busy with any other job. The Scan command functions only when the computer is on. Status light overview Several indicator ligh ts inform you of th e status of the HP Al l-in-One.
Light status What it means • The print cartridge is not intended for use in this HP All-in -One. • The print cartridge might be defective. The On , Resume , and Check Print Cartridge lights are blinking. Scanner failure. Turn off the HP All-in-One, then turn it on again.

5 Connection information The HP All-in-One come s equipped with a U SB port so you can connect direct ly to a computer using a USB cab l e. You can also share the device over an existing home network.

6 Load originals and load paper You can load many differen t types and sizes of paper in the HP All-in-One, including l etter or A4 paper, p hoto paper, transpa rencies, and envel opes.

HP All-in-One Paper or HP Printing Pape r Ensure that the Plain pap er type is selected when using HP All-in-One Pape r and HP Printing Paper. • HP All-in-One Pa per is specifically desi gned for HP All-in-One devices. It has an extra bright blue-white shade that prod uces shar per text and rich er colors than ordinary multifunction papers.
NOTE: At this ti me, some por tions of the HP Web site ar e availabl e in Engli sh only. Papers to avoid Using paper that is t oo thin or too thick, pap er that has a slick texture, or pa per that stretches easily can cau se paper jams.

4. Insert the stack of paper i nto the input tray wit h the short edge forward . Ensure that the side you want to print on faces down . Slide the stack of paper to ward the device until it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP All-in-One is idle and silent when you load paper into the i nput tray.
TIP: To help prevent rips, w rinkles, and curled or b ent edges, store all paper flat in a resealable bag. If the pap er is not stored properly, ext reme changes in te mperature and humidity might resul t in curled paper that does not work well in the H P All-in-One.
To load index cards i n the input tray 1. Remove all pape r from the inp ut tray. 2. Insert the sta ck of cards, wit h the side y ou want to pr int on facing down, into th e far- right side of the input tray. Slide the stack of card s forward until it sto ps.
To load envel opes 1. Remove all paper from the input tray. 2. Insert one or more envelopes into the far-right side of the input tray with the envelope flaps up and on the left . Slide the stack of envelopes forward unti l it stops. TIP: For more help on load ing envelopes, refer to the diagra m engraved in the base of the input tray.
HP Inkjet labels (for printing o nly) 1. Always use letter or A4 label sheets desig ned for use with HP inkjet devic es (such as HP inkjet labe ls), and make sure that the labels are no more than t wo years old. Labels on older sheet s might peel off when th e paper is pulled throug h the HP All- in-One, causing subsequent pape r jams.
7 Print from your computer The HP All-in-On e can be used with an y software appl ication that a l lows print ing. You can print a range of pr ojects, such as bo rderless images, new sletters, greeting cards, iron-on transfers, and posters.
6. Click OK to close t he Properties dialog box. 7. Click Print or OK to begi n printing. Make the HP All-in-One the default printer You can set the HP All-in-O ne as the default printe r to use from all so ftware applica tions.
5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Resizin g Options area, cli ck the appropriate paper si ze from the Size li st. The following ta ble lists the suggested p aper size settings for the d i fferent typ es of paper you can load in th e input tray.
View the print res olution The printer softw are displays the print resoluti on in dots per inch (dpi). The dpi varies according to the pa per type and print quality that you sel ect in the printer software. To view the pr int resolution 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input t ray.
To change the page ori entation 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the inp ut tray. 2. On the File menu in your software app lication, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All- in-One is the select ed printer. 4. Click the button t hat opens the Pro perties dialog box.
Preview your prin t job You can preview your prin t job before sendin g it to the HP All-in-One. Thi s helps to preve nt wasting paper and i nk on projects that do n ot print as expecte d. To preview your print job 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input t ray.
Use the Printing Shortcuts ta b for the following print tasks: • General Ever yday Printing : Print documents quickly. • Photo Printing– Borderless : Print to the top, bottom, and sid e edges of 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) HP Premi um Plus Photo Pape rs with a tear-off ta b.
5. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click the printing shortc ut that you want to delete. 6. Click Delete . The printin g shortcut is removed fr om the list. NOTE: Only the shortcuts th at you have created ca n be deleted. Th e original HP shortcuts cannot be de leted.
6. In the Resizin g Options area, cli ck the appropriate paper si ze from the Size li st. If a borderless i mage can be printe d on the specifi ed size, the Borderless check box is enabled. 7. In the Basi c options area, click a pa per type in the Paper Type drop-down list.
9. In the HP real life tech nologies area, click the Photo fix drop-d own list and select from the fo llowing options: • Off: applies no HP real li fe technologies to the image. • Basic: automatically focuses the ima g e; moderat ely adjusts im age sharpness.
NOTE: If a photo pri nt cartridge is al so installed, t he print qualit y is enhanced. A photo print cartri dge can be purchased separately if it is n ot included wi th the HP All- in-One. To print in Maxi mum dpi mode 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the inp ut tray.
7. For binding, do one of the fol lowing: • For binding on the top like a notebook or cal endar, select the Flip Pa ges Up check box. This causes the odd and even pages of your document to p rint opposite o f each other top-to-bott om.
To print a multiple-pag e document as a bookl et 1. Load paper into the i nput tray. The paper shoul d be thick enough that t he images do not show through to th e other side. 2. On the File menu in your software app lication, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All- in-One is the select ed printer.
10. Follow the inst ructions that appea r on your screen for reloading the paper to print on the second side , and then click Continue . 11. When the entire document ha s finished printing, fold the stack of paper in half, so th at the first page is on top, then staple the document along th e crease.
4. Click the button t hat opens the Pro perties dialog box. Depending on your sof tware application, this button mig ht be called Pro perties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Prefer ences . 5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Pages per sh eet list, click 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 9 , or 16 .
7. Click Page Order in the Layout Options list, and then click Front to Back . NOTE: If you set your docume nt to print on both sides of the page, th e Front to back option i s not available. Your document will automaticall y print in the corre ct order.
6. In the Basi c Options area, click th e appropriate transp arency type in the Paper Type list. TIP: If you want to make notatio ns on the back of the transpa rencies and erase them later without scratch ing the original, cli ck the Advance d tab, and select the Mirror Image check box.
Print a poster You can create a post er by printing a docume nt on multiple p ages. The HP All -in-One prints dotte d lines on some pages t o indicate where to trim the pages before ta ping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input t ray.
7. In the Poster Printing drop-down list, click either 2x2 (4 shee ts) ; 3x3 (9 sheets) ; 4x4 (16 sheets) ; or 5x 5 (25 sheets) . This selection tells the HP All-in-One to en large your document so that it fits o n 4, 9, 16, or 25 pages. If your original docu ment is multiple pages , each of those pag es will be printe d on 4, 9, 16, or 25 pages.
To stop a print job from the computer ▲ You can cancel most print jobs from the print queue. For more informatio n about how to do this, see t he Windows Help.
8 Use the copy features The HP All-in-One allows you to prod uce high-qual ity color and black- and-white copi es on a variety of paper types. You can enlarge or reduce the size of an original t o fit a specific paper size, ad just the copy quali ty, and make hig h-quality copies of photos, including bo rderless copies.
3. Press the Paper Type button to set the paper type. Copies made on phot o paper are automatically made using Be st quality. When Photo Paper Type is select ed, the HP All -in-One enlarges or shrinks the origi nal to fit wi thin the copy margin of t he detected paper size.
NOTE: Fast or Normal are not avail able when the paper ty pe is set to Photo . To make a Fast copy 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the inp ut tray. 2. Place your original w ith the side you wan t to copy or scan face down o n the left fron t corner of the glass.
4. Press the Start Copy Black or Star t Copy Color button to increase the number of copies up to a maximum of 9 (vari es by model). NOTE: The HP All-in-One w aits very briefly for another button pre ss. Pause for a while before pressing the Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color button again to star t the cop y job.
Make a 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch ) borderless copy of a photo To make a borderless copy of a photo, use the 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) H P Premium Plus Photo Paper with a tear-off ta b. When you remove the tea r-off tab, the output is a borderless copy of the im age that extends to the edges of the paper.

9 Use the scan features Scanning is the process o f converting text and pictures into an electronic f ormat for your computer. You can scan almost anyth ing (photos, magazine articles and te xt documents) on the HP All-in -One.

Edit a scanned document You can edit a scanned d ocument using yo ur Optical Char acter Recognition (OCR) software. Scanning t e xt using OCR software enable s you to bring the content of magazine articles, books, and ot her printed matter into your fa vorite word processor a nd many other applications as ed itable text.

10 Maintain the HP All-in-One The HP All-in -One requires l ittle maintena nce. Sometimes yo u might want to clean the glass and lid backing to re move surface dust and ensure that your cop ies and scans remain clear. You wil l also need to replace, a lign, or clean your print cartri dges from time to time.
Clean the l id backing Minor debris can accumulate on the white document b acking located underneat h the lid of the HP All-in-O ne. To clean the lid back ing 1.
3. Make sure the test pat terns show a complete grid and the thick color lines are complete. • If more than a few lines in a pattern are b roken, this might in dicate a problem w ith the nozzles.
Handle the print cartridges Before you replace or clean a print cartridge, yo u should know the part names and how to handle the print cartridges. 1 Copper-colored contacts 2 Plastic tape with pink pu.
NOTE: Ink from the cartri dges is used in the printing process in a number of dif ferent ways, including i n the initi alization process, which prepares t he device and cartridges for printing, and in printhead servicing, which ke eps print nozzles clear and ink fl owing smoothly.
To replace the print cartridges 1. Make sure th e HP All-in-One i s on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in -One is off when you open the print cartridge do or to access the print cart ridges, the HP All-in-O ne will not release the cartridges for changing.
5. If you are removin g the black print cart ridge in order to install the phot o print cartridge, store the black print cartrid ge in the print cartri dge protector or an a irtight plasti c container. If you are removing the print cartridge because it is low or out of ink, recycle the prin t cartridge.
7. Slide the new p rint cartridge forw ard into the empt y slot. Then gently push on the upper part of the p rint cartridge forwar d until it clicks into the socket. If you are installing the tri-color print cartridg e, slide it into th e left slot. If you are installing a black or photo print cartrid ge, slide it into the right slot.
Use ink-ba ckup mode Use the ink-backup mode to ope rate the HP All-in-One w ith only one print cartrid ge. The ink-backup mode is initia ted when a print cartri dge is removed from the print cartridg e cradle. NOTE: When the HP All-in -One operates in ink-backu p mode, a message i s displayed on screen.
Store the print cartridges Follow these guidelines to m aintain and store HP print cartrid ges and to en sure consistent print quali ty. • Print cartridge storage and han dling • Print cartridge p.
are removing it so you can print high-quali ty photos with the photo and tri-co lor print cartridges. To insert a print ca rtridge into the pri nt cartridge prot ector ▲ Place the print cartridge into the print cartridge prot ector at a slight angle and snap it securely into place.
To align newly in stalled print cartri dges 1. Make sure you have le tter or A4 unused plai n white paper loaded in the input t ray. The HP All-in-O ne prints a print cartrid ge alignmen t sheet. NOTE: If you have colored paper loade d in the input tray when you align the print cartridges, the alignment w ill fail.
Clean the print cartridges Use this feature w hen the self-test report shows stre aking, white lin es through any of the lines of color or when a color is muddy aft er installing a print cartridge for the f irst time. Do not clean print cartridges unn ecessarily, as this wastes ink an d shortens the life of the ink nozzles.
To clean the prin t cartridge contac ts 1. Turn on the HP All-in-On e and open the print cartri dge door. The print carriage m oves to the center of the HP All-in-One. 2. Wait until th e print carriage is idle and silent, and then unplug the power cord f rom the back of the HP All -in-One.
When debris gets on the prin t cartridges, it can cau se ink streaks and smudges on printed pages. Ink streaki ng can be corrected by cle aning around the ink nozzles as described here.

• Check the conn ection from the HP All -in-One to your computer. Verify that the USB cable is securely plugged into the USB port on t he back of the HP All-in-One. Make sure the other end o f the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on your com puter.
• Do not use paper that i s heavily textured. It can cause grap hics or text to print improperly. • Do not combine different paper types and paper si zes in the input tray; the e ntire stack of paper in the input tray mu st be the same size and type.

• If you are using a power strip, m a ke sure the power st rip is on. Or, try plugging the HP All-in-O ne directly into a grounded power outlet. • Test the power out let to make sure it is working. Plug in an app liance that you know works, and see if the app liance has power.

The HP Al l-in-One d oes not pr int Cause: The HP All-in-One and comput er are not communicating with each other. Solution: • Look at the On light located on the front of the HP All-in-One.
• If you are connecting th e HP All-in-One through a USB hub , make sure the hub is turned on. If the hub is on, try connecting directl y to your computer. • Check other printers or scanners. You might need to disconn ect older products from your computer.
Solution: Click Details to see what the spe cific problem is, and then correct the problem be fore attemp ting to in stall the so ftware. A red X appears on the USB connect prompt Cause: Normally, a green check appe ars indicating that the plug and pla y is successful.
Solution: Try to continue with the installatio n. If that does not work, stop and then restart the inst allation, and follow the direct ions on the screen. I f an error occurs, you might need t o uninstall and then reinstal l the softwa re. Do not simply delete t he HP All- in-One applicat ion files from your compu ter.
Solution: Install the HP Photosmart Software t hat came with the HP All -in-One. If it is installed , restart your computer. To instal l the HP Photosma rt Software 1. Insert the HP All-in-One CD-ROM into yo ur computer’s CD-ROM drive a nd then start the Setup program.

1. Insert the HP Al l-in-One CD-ROM int o your comput er’s CD-ROM drive and then start the Setup prog ram. 2. Disconnect the HP All-in-One from your computer. 3. Select Uninstal l and follow the on screen directi ons. 4. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is important th at you disconnec t the HP All-in-On e before restarting your computer.
4. If the problem persists, prin t a self-test re port to d etermine if there is a problem with the print cartridges . This report provides usef ul information about your print cartridges, i ncluding status information. 5. If the self-test rep ort shows a problem, clean the print cartridges.
To print a self- test report 1. Load letter or A4 un used plain white pa per into the input tray. 2. Press and hold the Cancel button and then press the Start Copy Color button. The HP All-in-O ne prints a self-te st report, which mig ht indicate the sour ce of the printing problem.
3. Lightly press do wn on the print cartridge to relea se it, and t hen pull it tow ard you out of the slot. NOTE: Do not remove both print cart ridges at the same time . Remove and clean each print cart ridge one at a t ime. Do no t leave a p rint cartridge outsi de the HP All- in-One for more t han 30 minutes.
To replace the print cartridges 1. Make sure th e HP All-in-One i s on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in -One is off when you open the print cartridge do or to access the print cart ridges, the HP All-in-O ne will not release the cartridges for changing.

Informatio n on print cartr idges For best results, use HP p rint cartridges. The fo llowing tips help mai ntain HP print cartridges and ensu re consistent pr int quality. • Keep all print ca rtridges in the original sealed packages until t hey are needed.
• Print and eval uate a self-test. For more information, see Print a self-test report . If the self-test shows a def ect, try the following: • Clean the prin t cartridges automati cally. For more inf ormation, see Clean t he print cartridges . • If you are m issing lines when you print, clean th e electrical co ntacts.
a mailing envelo pe. Make sure the p aper lays flat in the input tray and is not t oo wrinkled. Ink is not filling the tex t or graphics completely Cause: The print cartridges need to be cl eaned or mi ght be out of ink. Solution: Check the estima ted ink levels remaining in the print cartridg es.
Solution: Load hi gh-quality paper in the input tray and p rint the image with a high print quality set t ing, such as Best , Maximum dpi , or High Resolution . Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat . For best results when printing im ages, use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper.
Printouts or cop ies have vertical streaks Cause: The paper t ype is not suitable for the H P All-in-One. Solution: If the paper you are usi ng is too fibrous, the ink applied by the HP All -in- One might not fully cover the su rface of the paper. Use H P Premium Papers or any other paper typ e that is approp riate for the HP Al l-in-One.
• A blank page came out while printing • Ink is spraying the in side of the HP All -in-One when I pr int a photo Envelopes pr int incorrectly Cause: A stack of enve lopes is loaded inc orrectly. Solution: Remove all p aper from the input tray. Load a stack of en velopes in the input tray, wit h the envelope flaps facing up and on t he left.
Some documents take a long time to print. If noth ing has printed severa l minutes after you sent a print job to the H P All-in-One, check your com puter to see if there are any messages. Cause: The HP Al l-in-One has a paper jam. Solution: Clear the paper jam.
If the connecti ons are secure, and nothin g has printed several min utes after you sent a print job to the HP All- in-One, check the st atus of the HP All -in-One. In the HP Photosmart Software, click Status . For more information, see: Communicatio n problems over a USB connect i on Cause: The HP All-in-One is turned o ff.
Solution: Try printing anot her document from the same software app lication. If t h is works, then try printing a previously saved version of the document that is not corrupt. Nothing happens when I try to pr int Cause: The HP All-in-O ne is turned off.
If the connecti ons are secure, and nothin g has printed several min utes after you sent a print job to the HP All- in-One, check the st atus of the HP All -in-One. In the HP Photosmart Software, click Status . For more information, see: Communicatio n problems over a USB connect i on Cause: The HP All-in-One has a paper jam.
Solution: Check the prin ter margins. Make sure the margin set tings for the docume nt do not exceed the print a ble area of the HP All-in-One . To check your marg in settings 1. Preview your print job before sending it to the HP All -in-One. 2. Check the margi ns.
For more information, see: Load envelopes Text or graphics are cut off at the edge of the page Cause: The margins are not set correctly in yo ur software applicat ion. Solution: Make sure the margin sett ings for the docum ent do not exceed the printable area of the HP All-i n-One.
Solution: Check the estima ted ink levels remaining in the print cartridg es. If the print cartridges are low or out of ink, you mi ght need to replace the print cartridges.
For more information, see: Replace the print cartridg es Ink is spraying the inside of the HP All-in-One when I print a photo Cause: The borderless print sett ings require photo paper to be l oaded in the input tray. You are usi ng the wrong paper type.
Solution: Check the On light. If it is blinking , the HP All-i n-One is busy. Cause: The HP Al l-in-One does not recog nize the paper type. Solution: Do not use the HP All-in-On e to copy onto envelopes or othe r papers the HP All-in-One do es not support.

If you want to ma ke a borderless copy of a very small original, sc an the orig inal into the computer, resize the image, and then print a borderless co py of the enlarged image. Cause: You are trying t o make a borderless copy with out using photo p aper.
Solution: Open the software you installed with the HP All-in -One and try scannin g again. NOTE: To check to see whether t he software is running, right-click on the HP Digital Imaging M onitor icon in the system tray at the far right of the Windows taskbar.
