2 External component identification Finding your hardware and software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your computer: 1. From the Start screen, type c , and then select Co ntrol Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area, click Device Manager .
Display Item Component Description (1) Internal display switch Turns off the display and initiates Sleep if the display is closed while the power is on. 4 Removal and replacement procedures preliminary requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and replacement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screw driver ● Mag.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Impr oper cable placement ca n damage the comput er. Cables must b e handled with extre me care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sens itive to electro stati c discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packagin g and transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand co ntact, transport pr oducts in static-safe tube s, bags , or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive part s and assemblies with co nductive or approved co ntainers or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wrist st rap or a foot strap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of one megohm ±10% resistance in the ground cords.
5 Removal and replacement procedures for Customer Self- Repair parts NOTE: The Customer Self-Repair pro gra m is not available in all locations. 2. Disconnect the hard drive connector cable (2) from the system board. 3. Lift up on the hard drive tab (1) to release the hard drive from the hard drive bay. 4. Remove the hard drive (2) . 5. If it is necessary to disass emble the hard drive, perform the following steps: a.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the two Philli ps PM2.5×7. 0 screws th at secure the keyboard to the computer. 2. Partially open the computer. 3. Rest and secure the compu ter on its left side . 4. Insert a thin tool into the keyboard release hole , and then press on the back of the keyboard until the keyboard disengages from the computer.
7. Lift the rear edge of the keyboa rd until i t rests a t an angle. 8. Swing the rear edge of the keyboard (1) up and forward until it res ts upside do wn on the palm rest.
Top cover NOTE: The top cover spare part kit includes a TouchPad. 3. Remove the ten Phillips PM2. 5×7.0 screws that secure th e top cover to the computer. 4. Remove the three Phillips PM2.0×2.5 screw s (1) and the two Phill ips PM 2.5×3.5 s crews (2) that secure the top cover to the computer. 5. Turn the computer right side up with the front toward you.
7. Release the ZIF connecto r (1) to which the power b utton board ribbon cable is attached, and then disconnect the po wer button board rib bon cable from the system boar d.
Reverse this procedure to install the top cover. Component re placement procedures 63.

Display assembly su bcomponents NOTE: The display as sembly is spared only at the subcomponent level. Fo r more disp lay assembly spare part information, see the individual remov al subsections. To remove the display assembly and access the di splay assembly subcomponents, follow the se steps: 1.
4. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.5×7.0 screws (1) that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure. 5. Remove the display assembly (2) from the computer.
6. If it is necessary to replace the display beze l or any of the dis play assembly subcompo nents: a. Remove the two screw covers (1) and the four Phillips PM2.5×5.5 screws (2) that secure the display bezel to the display assembly. The screw covers are available in the Rubb er Kit, spare part numb er 719858-001.
c. Remove the di splay be zel (4) . The display bezel is available using s pare part number 71 9847-001 . 7. If it is necessary to replac e the webcam/microphone module: CAUTION: Handle the webcam/microphone module with caution. This module has a thin profile a nd is susceptibl e to damage when not handled car efully.
b. Disconnect the w ebcam/micro phone mo dule cable (1) from the webcam/ microphone module. c. Remove the webcam/microphone module. The webcam/microphone module is availabl e using spa re part numbe r 719845-001 .
8. If it is necessary to re place the displ ay panel: a. Remove the si x Phillip s PM2.5×4. 5 screws that secure the display panel to the display enclosure. CAUTION: Before turning the display panel upside down, ma ke sure the work surface is clear of tools, screws, and any other foreign ob jects.
d. Disconnect the display panel cable (4) from the display panel. e. Remove the di spla y panel. The display pane l is available usi ng spare par t number 719 873-001 . 9. If it is necessary to re place the displ ay hinges: a. Remove the fo ur Phillip s PM2.
10. If it is necessary to re place the displ ay panel cable: a. Release the webcam/microphone mo dule cable from the adhesive (1) attached to the display enclosure. b. Release the d isplay panel ca ble from the clips (2) and routing channel built into the display enclosure.
c. Remove the wireless antenna (3) . The wireless antenna are availabl e using spare part number 719856-001. Reverse this procedure to reassemble and install the display assemb ly. System board NOTE: The system bo ard spare part kit inclu des repl acement thermal material .

Remove the system board: 1. Close the computer . 2. Turn the computer up side down with the front toward you. 3. Disconnect the optical drive connector cable from the sy stem board. 4. Turn the computer right side up with the front toward you. 5. Open the computer.
7. Remove the two Phil lips PM2.5× 7.0 screws (5) that secure the system board to the base enclosure. 8. Lift the right side of the system board (1) unti l it rests a t an angle. 9. Remove the system board (2) by sliding it up and to the right an angle.
Fan Description Spare p art number Fan (includes cable) 719860-001 Before removing the fan, follow these steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
4. Remove the fan (3) . Reverse this procedure to ins tall the fan. Heat sink NOTE: The heat sink spare pa rt kit includes repl acement thermal material. Replacement therma l material is also available in the Ther mal Ma terial Kit, spar e part number 71 9864-001.
Before removing the heat sink, follow thes e steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect the power from the computer by un plugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Remove the heat sin k (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal material located bet ween the heat sink and the system board components, it may be necessary to move the heat sink from side to side to detach it. NOTE: Steps 4 and 5 apply to comp uter models equipped with a graphics subsyst em with UMA memory.
5. Remove the heat sin k (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal ma terial located between the heat sink and the system board components, it may be necessa ry to move the heat sink from side to side to detach it.
Reverse this procedure to ins tall the heat sink. 84 Chapter 6 Removal and replacement proced ures for Authorized Service Provider parts.
Processor NOTE: The processor sp are part kit includ es replac ement thermal material. Replacement thermal material is also available in the Ther mal Ma terial Kit, spar e part number 71 9864-001. Description Spare p art number AMD A10-5750M 2.50-GHz processor (tu rbo up to 3.
g. Fan (see Fan on page 79 ) h. Heat sink (see Heat sink on page 80 ) Remove the processor: 1. Use a flat-bladed screw driver (1 ) to turn the processor locking screw one-half turn counterclockwise (2) , until you he ar a click. 2. Lift the processor (3) straight u p, and remove i t.
PCH heat sink NOTE: The post controller hub (PCH) heat sink spare pa rt kit includes replacement thermal material. Replacement thermal material is also available in the Thermal Material Kit, spare part number 719864-001. Description Spare p art number PCH heat sink 719863-001 Before removing the PCH heat sink, follow these steps: 1.
2. Remove the PCH hea t sink (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhesive quality o f the thermal material located betw een the PCH heat sink and system board, it may be necess ary to move the PCH heat sink fr om side to side to detach it.
RTC battery Description Spare p art number RTC battery (includes double-sided tape) 637193-001 Before removing the RTC battery, follow these steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
3. Detach the RTC battery (2) from the system board. (The RTC battery is atta ched to the base enclosure by double-si ded tape.) 4. Remove the RTC battery.
RJ-45/USB board Description Spare p art number RJ-45/USB board (inc ludes cable) 719844-001 Before removing the RJ-45/US B bo ard, follow the se steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
Power connector cable Description Spare p art number Power connector cable 719859-001 Before removing the power connect or cable, follow these s teps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
3. Release the powe r connector (3) from the clips and mold built into the base enclosure. 4. Remove the power connector cable. Reverse this procedure to install the power connector cable.
Speakers Description Spare p art number Speakers (include left and right speakers and cables) 719865-001 Before removing the speakers, fo llow these steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
3. Remove the speakers (3) . Reverse this procedure to install the speakers. Component re placement procedures 95.
Optical drive connector cable Description Spare p art number Optical drive connector cable 719846-001 Before removing the optical drive co nnector cable, follow th ese steps: 1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsur e whether the computer is off o r in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Remove the optical drive connector cable (2) . Reverse this procedure to install the optical drive connector cable. Component re placement procedures 97.
7 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Outp u t System (BIOS), controls communication between all the input a nd output devices on the s ystem (such as d isk drives, display, keyboard, mouse, and printer).
3. To exit Setup Utility (BIOS) without saving your changes, use the arrow keys to se lect Exit , s elect Exit Discarding Changes , and then press enter .
NOTE: After a message on the scree n reports a su ccessful installation, you can delete the downloaded file from your hard drive. Using System Diagnostics System Diagnostics allows you to run diag nostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly.
