1 Starting right This computer is a powerful tool de signed to enhance your work and entertainment. Read this chapter to learn abou t best practices after setup, fun things to do with your computer, and where to get more HP resources.

2 Getting to know your computer Finding your hardware an d software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your computer: 1. From the Start screen, type c , and then select Control Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area, click Device Manager .
Right side Component Description (1) Audio-out (headphone) jack/Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects optional powered stereo speakers, he adphones, earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable. Also connects an optional headset microphone. This jack does not support optional microphone-only devices.
Left side Component Description (1) Security cable slot Attaches an opti onal security cable to the computer. NOTE: The security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but it may not preve nt the computer from be ing mishandled or stolen.
Component Description (6) Hard drive light ● Blinking white: The hard drive is being accessed. ● Amber: HP 3D DriveGuard has tem porarily parked the hard drive. NOTE: For information about HP 3D DriveG uard, see Using HP 3D DriveGuard (select models only) on page 50 .
Display Component Description (1) Internal microphones (2) Record sound. (2) Webcam light ● On: The webcam is in use. ● Off: The webcam is not in use. (3) HP TrueVision HD Webcam Records video, capt ures still ph otographs , and provides access to video conferences and online chat by means o f streaming video.
Top TouchPad Component Description (1) Touchpad zone Moves the on-screen pointer and selects or activa tes items on the screen. NOTE: The TouchPad also sup ports edge-swipe gestures. For more information, see Edge swipes on page 30 . (2) Left TouchPad button Functions like the left button on an exter nal mouse.
Lights Component Description (1) Power light ● On: The computer is on. ● Blinking: The computer is in the Sleep state, which is an energy-saving mode. The computer sh uts off power to the display and other unneeded components. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation.
Buttons and speakers Component Description (1) Power button ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep. ● When the computer is in Hibernation, press the button briefly t o exit Hi bernat ion.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Reveals system information when pr essed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently used system functions when pressed in combination with the b key or the esc key. (3) Windows key Returns you to the Start screen from an open app or the Windows desktop.
Bottom Component Description (1) HP Triple Bass Reflex Subwoofer Provides superior bass sound. (2) Vents (2) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The com puter f an star ts up aut omati cally to cool internal components and prevent overheating.
Labels The labels affixed to the computer provid e inform ation you may need wh en you troubles hoot system problems or travel internationa lly with the comput er.
3 Connecting to a network Your computer can tr avel with you wh erever you go. But even at home, you can explor e the globe and access inform ation from millions of we bsites using your computer and a wire d or wireless network connection. This chapter will hel p you get connected to that world.
Using operating system contro ls The Network and Sha ring Center al lows you to set up a connection or netwo rk, connect to a network, manage wireless ne tworks, and diagnose and repair network pro blems. To use operating system controls: 1. From the Start screen, type n , and then select Settings .
As your network grows, additional wirel ess and wi red computers can be connected to the ne twork to access the Internet. For help in setting up your WLAN , see the info rmation provided by yo u r router manufacturer or your ISP.
4. Click Connect . If the WLAN is a security-enab led WLAN, you ar e p rompted to enter a security code. Type the code, and then click OK to complete the connection. NOTE: If no WLANs are listed, you may be out of ra nge of a wirele ss router or access point.
2. Plug the other end of the network cable into a network wall jack (2) or router. NOTE: If the network cable contains noise su ppression circuitry (3) , which prevents interference from TV an d radio receptio n, orient the circuitry end of the cable toward the computer.
4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP comput er as an enterta inment hub to socialize via the webcam, e njoy and mana ge your music, and download and watch movies. Or, to make your comput er an even more powerfu l entertainment center, connect externa l devices like a monitor, projec tor, or TV, or spea kers and headphones.
Component Description (4) USB 2.0 port Connects an optional USB device. NOTE: For details about different types of USB ports, see Using a USB device on page 47 . (5) Audio-out (headphone) jack/Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects optional power ed stereo speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable.
For details about u sing the webcam, go to Help and Supp ort. From the Start screen, type h , and then select Help and Suppor t . Using audio On your HP computer, you can play music CDs, do wnload and listen to music, stream aud io content from the web (including radio), record audio, or mi x audio and vide o to create multimedia.
Checking the sound To check the audio functions on your computer, follow these ste ps: 1. From the Start screen, type c , and then select Control Panel from the list of applications. 2. Select Hardware and Sound , and th en select Sound . 3. When the Sound wind ow opens, select the Sounds tab.
Connecting an HDMI device NOTE: To connect an HDMI device to your computer , you need an HDMI cable, sold separa tely. To see the computer scre en image on a h igh-definit ion TV or monitor, connect the hig h-definition device according to the following instructions.
To return the audio stream to the computer speakers: 1. From the Windows desktop, ri ght-click the Speakers icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and the n click Pla yback devices . 2. On the Playback tab, click Speakers /HP .
5 Navigating using touch gestures, pointing devices and the keyboard Your computer allows navi gation using touch gestures (select mode ls only) in addition to the keyboard and mo use. Touch gestu res can be used on your comp uter TouchPad or on a to uch screen (select models only).
Tapping To make an on-scre en selection, us e the tap fun ction on the T ouchPad. ● Point to an item on the screen , and then tap one fin ger on the TouchPa d zone to make a selection.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful for mo ving up, down, or sideways on a page or image. ● Place two fingers slightly apart on the Touc hPad zone and then drag them up, down, left, or right. Pinching/zooming Pinching and zooming allow you to zoom in or out on images or text.
Rotating (select models only) Rotating allows you to turn i tems such as photos. ● Point to an object, then anchor the forefinger of your left hand in the TouchPad zone. Using yo ur right hand, slide yo ur forefinger in a sw eeping motion from 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock.
Flicking (select models only) Flicking allows you to navigate th rough scr eens or q uickly scroll through d ocuments. ● Place three fingers o n the TouchPad zo ne and f lick you r fingers in a light, quick motion up, down, left or right. Edge swipes Edge swipes allow you to perform ta sks such as changing settin gs and finding o r using apps.
Top-edge swipe The top-edge swipe allows you to access All apps available on the Sta rt screen. IMPORTANT: Wh en an app is active , the top-edg e gesture varies depe nding on th e app. ● Swipe your finger gently from the top edg e to reveal availab le apps.
Using touch screen gestures (select models only) A touch screen computer allows you to control item s on the screen directly with your fingers. TIP: On touch scr een computers, you can perform th e gestures on the screen or on the TouchPad. You can also perfor m on-screen actions with the keyboard and mouse.
Tapping To make an on-scre en selection, use th e tap function. ● Use one finger to tap an object on the screen to make a selection. Double-tap an item to ope n it. NOTE: Press and hold your fing er on an object to open a help scree n that provid es information about the obj ect.
Pinching/stretching Pinching and stre tching allows you to zoom out or in on images or text. ● Zoom in by placing two fing ers together on th e display and then move your fingers apa rt. ● Zoom out by placing two fingers ap art on the displ ay and then move yo ur fingers together.
Edge swipes With edge swipes, you can perfo rm tasks such a s changing settings an d finding or using apps. Right-edge swipe The right-edge swipe reveals the charms, which let you search, share, start apps, access devices, or change setting s.
Top-edge swipe and bottom-edge swipe The top-edge swipe or bottom-edge swipe allows you to open a list of app s available on your computer. 1. Gently swipe your finger fro m the top edge or the bottom edge of the display bezel onto the screen. 2. Tap All apps to view available apps.
The action key feature is enabled at the factory. You can disable th is feature in Setup Utility (BIOS). See Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics on page 58 for instruct ions on opening Setup Utility (BIOS), and then follow the instructions at the bottom of the screen.
Using Microsoft Windows 8 shortcut keys Microsoft Windows 8 provides shortcuts to pe rform actions quickly. Press the Windows key in combination with th e appropriate key to p erform the action. Shortcut key Key Description Returns you to the Start screen from an open app or the Windows desktop.
Using the hot keys A hot key is a combination of the fn key and the esc key or the b key. To use a hot key: ▲ Briefly press the fn key, and then briefly press th e second key of the combination. Function Hot key Description Reveals sy stem information.
6 Managing power Your computer can operate on either battery power or external power. Wh en the computer is only running on batte ry power and an AC power source is not a vailable to charge the battery, it is important to monitor and co nserve the battery char ge.
Initiating and exiti ng Sleep (select models only) With the computer on, you can initiate Sleep in an y of the followin g ways: ● Close the displa y. ● From the Start screen, point to the upper-right or lowe r-right corner of the screen to reveal the charms.
4. Click Require a password (recomme nded) . NOTE: If you need to crea te a user account p a sswor d or change your current user account password, click Create or change you r user account p assword , and th en follow the on- screen instructions. If you do not need to create or change a user a ccount passwo rd, go to step 5.
HP Support Assistant pr ovides the followin g tools and in formation ab out the battery: ● Battery test ● Information on battery types, spec ifications, life cycles, and capacity Conserving battery power Tips for conserving battery p ower and maximizing battery life: ● Lower the brightness on the display.
Resolving a low battery level when th e computer cannot exit Hibernation When the computer lacks su fficient power to exit Hibernation, follow these steps: 1. Connect the AC a dapter to the computer and to external power. 2. Exit Hibernation by pressin g the power button .
To test th e AC adapter: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Connect the AC adapter to the computer, and then plug it into an AC outlet. 3. Turn on th e compute r.
Shutting down (turning off) the computer CAUTION: Unsaved inf ormation is lost wh en the comput er shuts down. Be sure to save your work before shutting down the comput er. The Shut down command closes all open programs , including the operatin g system, and then turns off the display an d computer.
7 Managing and sharing information Drives are digita l storage devices that help you store, manage, share, an d access information. Your computer has an internal hard drive or a solid st ate drive that stores yo ur computer's software, operating system, and also provides storage for all of your personal files.
Connecting a USB device CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to a USB conn ector, use minimal force to connect the device. ▲ Connect the USB cab le for the device to the USB po rt. NOTE: The USB port on your compu ter may look slig htly different from the illustration in this section.
To disconnect an unpo wered external device, stop the device, and then discon nect it from the computer. To disc onnect a powere d external device , turn off the device , disconnect it from the computer, and then unplug the AC power cord .
8 Maintaining your computer It is important to perform regular maintenance to keep you r computer in optimal con dition. This chapter provides information abou t improving the perfo rmance of your comp uter by running too ls such as Disk Defragmenter and Disk Clea nup.
To run Disk Defra gmenter: 1. Connect the compu ter to AC power. 2. From the Start screen, type d , and then type disk in the search box. Select Settings , and t hen select Defragment and optim ize your driv es . 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. For additional informatio n, access the Disk Defra gmenter software Help.
Cleaning the Touc hPad and keyboard CAUTION: Never allow liquids to drip be tween the keys on the keybo ard, even when you are cleaning the co mputer. This can permanently d amage internal com ponents.
WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock, fi re, or d amage to the equipment, do not attempt to powe r the computer with a voltage converter kit so ld for appliances.
9 Securing your computer and information Computer security is essential for protectin g the confiden tiality, integrity, and avail ability of your information.
Setting Windows passwords Password Function User password Protects access to a Windows user account. Administrator password Protects administrat or-level access to computer contents. NOTE: This password cannot be used to access Setup Utility (BIOS) contents.

Installing HP and third- party software updates HP recommends that you regula rly update the softwar e and drivers that were origin ally installed on your computer.
10 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an u nsuccessful installation, downlo ad and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external power u sing the AC adapter.
Using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) HP PC Hard ware Diagn ostics is a Un ified Extensible Firm ware Interfac e (UEFI) that al lows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer ha rdwa re is functioning properly.
11 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes tool s prov ided by HP and Windows to help you safeguard your information and retrieve it if you ever need to. These tools w ill help you return your comp uter to a proper working state or even back to the origina l fa ctory state, all with simple st eps.
choose to reset the computer by reinstallin g Windows or choose to recover using HP Recovery Manager. NOTE: File History is not enabl ed by default, so you m ust turn it on. For more information and step s for enabling Wi ndo ws File History, see Help an d Support.
Restore and recovery There are several options for re covering your system. Choose the method that best matches your situation and leve l of expertise: ● If you need to restore your p e rsonal files and data, you can use Windows File History to restore your information from the backups you created.
Using Windows Refresh fo r quick and easy recovery When your computer is not work ing properly and you need to regain system stability, the Windows Refresh option allo ws you to start fres h a nd keep what is importan t to you. IMPORTANT: Refresh re moves any traditional applications that were not origina lly installed on the system at the factory.
3. Click Change PC setting s in the bottom-right corne r of the scre en, and then select General from the PC settings screen. 4. Under Remove everythi ng and reinstall Windows , select Get starte d , and follow the on- screen instructions.
Using HP Recovery media to recover You can use HP Recovery media to recover the or iginal system. This method can be used if your system does not have an HP Reco very partition or if the hard drive is not working proper ly. 1. If possible, bac k up all personal files.
12 Specifications Input power The power information in this section may be helpfu l if you plan to travel internationally with the computer. The computer op erates on DC power, whi ch can be supplied by an AC or a DC power source. The AC power source must be rated at 100–240 V, 50 –60 Hz.
