2 HP Photosmart overview Use the HP Photosmart to quickly and easil y accomplish tasks such as printing photos from a memory card. You can access m any HP Photosmart functions direct ly from the control panel, w ithout turning on your comp uter.

Use the HP Photosmart Software The HP Photosma rt Software provides a fast and easy way to make prints of yo ur photos. It also provides a ccess to other basic HP imaging software features, such as saving and viewing your pho tos. 4 Finish setting up the HP Photosmart After you have completed the steps in your Setup Guide, re fer to this section to help you finish setting up the HP Photosmart. This section cont ains important setup-related information f or your device, including inform ation on setting preferences.

To install and print usin g the Microsoft stack 1. Make sure that you have insta lled the HP Photosmart software on the co mputer. NOTE: The purpose of inst alling the software is to make sure th e printer driver is available for th e Bluetooth ® connection.
The computer directl y connected to the HP Photosmart acts as the ho st for the printer and has full softwa re functionality. The other computer, w hich is referred to as a client , has access on ly to the print feature s. You must perform other fu nctions from the host computer or from the cont rol panel on the HP Photosmart.
Wired ne twork setup This section describes how to connect the HP Pho tosmart to a router, switch, or hub using an Ethernet cable and how to i nstall the HP Photosmart software fo r a network connection.

Change the HP Photo smart from a USB connection to a network conne ction If you first install the HP Photosm art with a USB connection, you can later change t o an Ethernet network conn ection. If you already und erstand how to connect to a network, you can use the gene ral directions below.

Use the Embedded Web Server to modify network settings The Embedded Web Serve r gives you an intuitive interf ace to your network connecti on parameters. To use the Embedded Web Server to modify ne twork settings 1. Print a network conf iguration page to find the I P address for the HP Photosmart.
General network settings The followin g table describes the general network settings shown on the network configuratio n page. Paramete r Description Network Status Status of the HP Photosmart: • Ready : The HP Photosmart is ready to receive or transmit data.
Parameter Description NOTE: Some Internet service providers (ISPs) require that you register the MAC address of the Network Card or LAN Ad apter that was connected to your cable or DSL modem during installation. IP Address This address uniquely identifies the devic e on the network.
Paramete r Description broken up into packets. Each packet contains the destination address as well as the data. Total Packets received The number of packets received by the HP Photosmart without error since it has been turned on. The counter clears after the HP Photosmart is turned o ff.
DNS-SD See DNS. The SD portion stands for Service Discovery. This is part of a protocol developed by Apple that enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. DSL Digital Subscriber Line. A high- speed connection to the Inter net.

6 Load paper You can load many differe nt types and sizes of paper in the HP Ph otosmart, including letter or A4 paper, p hoto paper, transparencies, enve lopes, and HP CD/DVD tatt oo labels.
HP Advanced Photo Paper or HP Pho to Paper HP Advanced Photo Paper or HP Photo P aper is a sturdy, gl ossy photo paper that features an instant -dry finish for easy handling without smudgi ng. It resists water, smears, fingerprint s, and humidity. Your print s have a look and feel comparable to a store- processed photo.

Pull out the mai n input tray, and then slide the paper-width and paper-length guides to their outerm ost positions.
3. Insert the stack of pape r into the main input tra y with the short edge forward and the print side down. Sli de the stack of paper forward until it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP Photosma rt is idle and silent when you lo ad paper into t he main input tray.
5. Push the main input t ray back into the HP Photosmart. 6. Pull the output tray ex tender towa rd you, as far as it will go. NOTE: When you use legal-size paper, leave the tray e xtender closed. Load 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) pho to paper You can load up to 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 inch) photo pap er into the photo tray of the HP Photosmart.

7 Print from your computer The HP Phot osmart can be used with any softwa re application that allo ws printing. You can print a range of proje cts, such as borderless imag es, newsletters, greeting cards, iron-on transfers, and posters.
Make the HP Photosmart the default printer You can set the HP Photosmart as the default printer to use from al l software applications. This means that the HP Photosmart is automatically selecte d in the printer list wh en you select Print f rom the File menu in a software application .

5. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click the printi ng shortc ut that you w ant to delete. 6. Click Delete . The printin g shortcut is removed from the li st. NOTE: Only the shortcuts th at you have created can be del eted. The original HP shortcuts cannot be dele ted.

NOTE: Do not leave unu sed photo paper in the inpu t tray. The paper might sta rt to curl, which could reduce th e quality of your printout. Photo paper should be flat bef ore printing .

Select any other print set tings that you want, and the n click OK . Print on both sides of th e page You can print two-sided p ages with the HP Photosmart manual ly.
• For binding on the side like a book or magazine, click to clear th e Flip Pages Up check box. This causes the od d and even pages of your document to print opposite of e ach other left-to-ri ght. This ensures that the t op of the page is always at the top of the sheet when yo u turn the pages in your bound d ocument.
8. Click OK , and then click Print or OK in the Print dialog box. The HP Phot osmart begins printin g. A dialog box displa ys instructions on the screen when it is t ime to process the second side of you r job. Do not click Continue in the dialog box until you have relo aded the paper as instru cted in the following step s.
Print multip le pages on a single shee t You can print up t o 16 pages on a single sheet of pa per. To print multipl e pages on a single sheet 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the in put tray. 2. On the File menu in your software application, click Print .
To print a multiple-pag e document in reverse order 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tra y. 2. On the File menu in your software application , click Print . 3. Make sure the HP Photosmart is the selected printe r. 4. Click the button t hat opens the Properties dial og box.
To print on transpar encies 1. Load the transpar ency into the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your software application, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP Ph otosmart is the selected pri nter. 4. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog bo x.
Print a poster You can create a poster by print ing a document on multiple pages. The HP Photosmart prints dotted l ines on some pages to indicate w here to trim the pages before taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tra y.
To print a Web page 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the main input tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web bro wser, click Print . The Print dial og box appears. 3. Make sure the HP Ph otosmart is the selected pri nter. 4. If your Web browser support s it, select the items on t he Web page that you want to include in t he printout.

8 Use the photo features The HP Photosmart is equipped wit h memory card slots and a front USB port t hat enable you to print or edit photo s from a memory card or storage device (such as a keychain drive, portable hard dri ve, or a digital camera in stora ge mode) without upload ing your photos to a computer first.

Before transferring phot os to your computer, you need t o remove the memory card from your digital ca mera and insert it in the appropriat e memory card slot on the HP Photosmart, or connect a storage device to the front USB po rt.
Edit photos using the control panel The HP Phot osmart offers several basic editin g features that you can use to edit your photos manually b efore you print them, as well as a f eature that enables you to automatically enhance your photos.

To preview your cr opped photo ▲ Touch the Back icon until you return to the Options menu, then touch Print Preview . To print yo ur rotated photo ▲ Touch the Back icon unti l you return to the View Photos screen, then touch Print . Adjust the brightness of your photos You can ad just the brightness of a p hoto so that it prin ts lighter or darker than th e original photo you took w ith your digital camera.
NOTE: The changes you make t o the photo apply only t o viewing and printing t he photo. The chang es will not be saved on the memory card or sto rage device. To print a frame around your photo 1. Insert a memory card into the ap propriate slot on the HP Photosma rt, or connect a storage device to the front USB port.
3. Touch or to scroll through the th umbnails of your photos. 4. When the thumbna il of the photo you want to ed it appears, touch it. 5. When the select ed photo appears by itself on the display, touch the image or touch Options . The Options me nu appears.

Print forms The HP Photosmart con tains built-in templates that enab le you to print common forms, such as narrow or wide ruled notebook paper, graph paper, task checklists, and music sheets on plain lett er- or A4-size paper. To print forms from the control panel 1.
10 Maintain the HP Photosmart The HP Photosmart re quires little maintenance. You might need to replace, align, or clean your ink cartridges from time to time ensure that your p rintouts are always of the highest quality. This se ction provides instructions for keepi ng the HP Photosmart in t op working condition.
To check the ink leve ls from the HP Photosmart Software 1. In the HP So lution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , and then click Printer Toolbo x . NOTE: You can also open t he Printer Toolbox from the Print Pro perties di alog box. In the Print Properties dialog box, cl ick the Se rvices tab, an d then click Service this devi ce .
To replace th e ink cartridges 1. Make sure the HP Photosmart is tu rned on. 2. Open the ink cartridg e door by lifting from the front center of th e device, until the door locks into place. 3. Squeeze the bottom of the latch below the ink cartridge you want to re place, and then lift the latch.
4. Pull the ink cartridge towa rd you out of its slot to remove it . 5. Remove the new in k cart ridge from its packaging, and then, holding it by the handle, push the ink cartridge in to the empty slot. Match the color and pa ttern of the ink cartridge to the color and pattern on the pr int carriage.

3. Click the Device Services tab. 4. Click Align the Printer . The HP Photo smart prints a test page, aligns the p rint head, and cal ibrates the printer.

Remove the a ffected ink cartridge and look at the end-of-warranty da te on the bottom. If it is before t he end-of-warranty date, contact HP support to ob tain a replacement ink cartridge.

To clean the exterior of the HP Ph otosmart 1. Turn off the HP Photosmart. 2. Use a soft cloth o r slightly moistened sponge to w ipe dust, smudges, and stain s off the case. The interior o f the HP Photosmart does not require cleaning. Keep fluids away from the contro l panel and th e interior of th e HP Photosmart.

11 Shop for ink supplies For a list of ink cartrid ge numbers, see the printed documentati on that came with the HP Photosmart. You can also use the soft ware that came with the HP Photosmart to find out the reorde r number for all the ink cartridges.

sure the other end o f the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on your computer. After the cable is connected properly, t urn the HP Photosmart o ff and then on agai n. • If you are connecting the HP Photosmart through a USB hub, make sure the hub is turned on .
• Clean the prin t head when you notice a signifi cant decrease in print q uality. • Do not clean the prin t head unnecessarily. This wastes i nk and shortens the life of the cartridges. • Handle ink cartridges carefu lly. Dropping, jarring, or rough handl ing during installation can cause temporary printing problems.
3. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removing it from the ro llers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining insi de the device. If you do not remove al l the pieces of paper from t he HP Photosmart, more paper jams are likel y to occur.
4. Gently pull the paper out o f the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removing i t from the rollers, check the rollers and wh eels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining inside the device. If you do not rem ove all the pieces of paper from the HP Photosmart, more paper jams are likely to occur.
4. Turn off the HP Photos mart, wait one mi nute, then re start it. 5. Reinstall the HP Photos mart software. CAUTION: Do not co nnect the USB cable to the computer unti l prompted by the software installation screen.
• Test the power out let to make sure it is working. Pl ug in an appliance that you know works, and see if the app liance has power. If not, then there might be a problem with the p ower outlet. • If you plugged the HP Photosmart into a switched outlet, make sure the switch is on.
For more informatio n on installing the so ftware and connecting the USB ca ble, see the Setup Guide that came with the HP Photosm art. The display show s the wrong language Cause: You might have selected the incorrect language when setting up the HP Photosmart.
Solution: Clear the paper jam, and then follow the prompt s on the display or the computer screen to contin ue. For more information, see: “ Clear paper jams ” on page 99 Cause: The print head assembly is blocked. Solution: There might be some packing material inside the HP Photosmart.
A red X appears on the USB connect prompt Cause: Normally, a green check appears ind icating that the USB connection is successful. A red X i ndicates that the USB connection fai led. Solution: Check that the HP Photosmart is turned on, and then try the US B connection agai n.

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , Settings , Control Panel (or just Contro l Panel ). 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs (or click Uninstall a progr am ). 3. Select HP Photosmart Prin ter Driver Software , and then click Change/Remove . Follow the onscree n instructions.
Cause: The HP Photosm art is turned off. Solution: Turn the HP Pho tosmart on. Cause: The com puter is turned off. Solution: Turn the computer o n. Cause: The HP Photosmart is not properly conn ected to the computer. Solution: Check the connection from the HP Photo smart to your computer.
Solution: Check th e following cables to ens ure the y are connected properly. • Cables bet ween the HP Photosmart and the hub or router • Cables bet ween the hub or router and your computer • C.
Solution: Turn off the HP Photosmart , the computer, and the rout er. Wait 30 seconds. Turn on the router first , and then turn on the HP Photosmart an d the computer. Cause: The HP Photosma rt and computer are not connected to the same network. Solution: Try accessing the Embedded Web Server on the HP Photo smart.
If the screen still ap pears, try uninstalling the HP Photosmart software, rebooting your computer, and temporarily disablin g your firewall before reinst alling the HP Photosmart softw are. You can re-enable your firewall ap plication after installati on is complete.
• Printouts seem blurry or fuzzy • Printouts have vertical streaks • Printouts are slanted or skewed • Paper is not picked up from the input tray Ink is bleeding or smearing Cause: The paper type is not suitable for the HP Ph otosmart. Solution: Use HP Premium Papers or any oth er paper type that is appropriate f or the HP Photos mart.
If the prob lem persists, use th e software you instal led with the HP Ph otosmart or another softwa re application to rotate you r image 180 degrees so that the light blue, gray, or brown hues in your im age do not print at the bottom o f the page.
Solution: Load high-qual ity paper in the input tray an d print the image with a high print quality sett ing, such as Best , Maximum dpi , or High Reso lution . Always make sure the paper you are pri nting on is flat. For best results when printing image s, use HP Premium Plus Pho to Paper.

NOTE: To avoid paper jams, tuck the flaps inside the envelopes. Cause: The wrong type of envelop e is loaded. Solution: Do not use shiny or embossed envelo pes or envelopes that have clasps or windows.
Solution: Turn the HP Photosmart of f and open the ink cartridge door . Remove any objects that are blocki ng the print head assembly (in cluding any packing materials), and then turn the HP Photosmart on again. Cause: The compute r is not communicating with the HP Pho tosmart.
Solution: The printer driver status might have chang ed to either offline or stop printing . To check the prin ter driver status 1. In the HP Solution C enter, click the device tab. 2. Click Settings . 3. Click Status . If the status is offline or stop printing , change t he status to read y .

Remove memo ry card or storage devi ce Cause: A storage device is connect ed to the front USB port, and then a memory card was inserted into a memory card slot. Solution: Remove either the the storage device or the memory card. Only one card or device can be accessed at a time.
Other users on the network can access my memo ry card or storage device Cause: The Common Internet File System (CIFS) serve r in the HP Photosmart does not support authen tication. This is a limitati on of the CIFS server. The CIFS server is i ncluded in all net work-connected H P Photosmart devices.
Firmware revi sion mismatch Cause: The revision num ber of the HP Photosmart fi rmware does not match the revision number of the software. Solution: To find support and warranty info rmation, go to the HP Web site at www.
Cause: You might be using the printe r in an extremely high- or low-humi dity environment. Solution: Load one sheet o f photo paper at a time. Photo tray cannot en gage Cause: The photo tray might not be pushed all the way in. Solution: Lift t he output tray, then push the photo tra y all the way in.
Photos not f ound Cause: Some of the files on the i nserted memory card or atta ched storage device are damaged. Solution: Reinsert th e memory card in t he HP Photosma rt or try transferring the files to your co mputer using a me mory card reader or a USB cable.
Invalid file name Cause: The file name you entere d is invalid. Solution: Make sure that you are not using any i nvalid symbols in the file name. NOTE: Although the f ile name might look correct, i t could still include invalid characters. Ov erwrite the existi ng file name with a new name.
Memory card error Cause: There are two or more memory card s inserted into the HP Photosma rt at the same time. Solution: Remove all but one memory c ard. The HP Phot osmart reads the remaining memory card and displays th e first photo stored on the memory card.
Cause: You have inserted a Compact Flash mem ory card backwards or upside down. Solution: Remove the memory card and reinse rt it correctly. The la bel of the Compact Fl ash card faces up and should be readabl e as you insert it into the slo t. Cause: You have not fully inserted the m emory card.
