2 HP Photosmart overview Use the HP Photosmart t o print photos from a memory ca rd or print directly on the surface of specially coated CDs and DVDs. Yo u can access many HP Photosmart f unctions directly from the control panel, without turnin g on your computer.

6 Load paper You can load many differe nt types and sizes of p aper in the HP Photosmart , including letter or A4 paper, ph oto paper, transpar encies, and envelopes. In addition, the HP Photosmart lets you load and pri n t directly on the surface of specially coated CDs and DVDs.

Load full-size pa per You can load many types of lette r or A4 paper into the main inpu t tray of the HP Photosmart. To load fu ll-size pape r 1. Raise the outpu t tray to load paper into the main in put tray. 2. Slide the paper-wid th guide to its ou termost position.
3. Insert the stack of pape r into the main input tray wit h the sho rt edge forward and the print side down. Sli de the stack of paper forw ard until it stop s. CAUTION: Make sure that the product is idle and silent w hen you load paper into the main input tray.

4. Slide the paper-w idth guide inward u n til it sto ps at the edge of the paper. Do not overload the pho to tray; make sure the stack of photo paper fits with in the photo tray and is no higher than the top of the paper-width guide. 5. Lower the photo tray l id.

Load envelo pes You can load one or more envelopes in to the main input tra y of the HP Photosmart. D o not use shiny or embossed envelopes or envelopes that ha ve clasps or windows. NOTE: For specific details on how to format text for printing on envelopes, consult the help files in your word processin g software.
4. Insert one or more envelope s into the far-right side of th e main input tray, with the envelope flaps on the le ft and facing up. Slide the stack of envelo pes forward unti l it stops. 5. Slide the paper-w idth guide inward against the stack of envelo pes until it stops.
HP Premium Ink jet Transparen cy Film ▲ Insert the film so tha t the white transpare ncy strip (with ar rows and th e HP logo) is o n top and is going in to the input tr ay first.
To load a regular-s ize (120 mm) CD/DVD on the CD/DVD tray 1. Carefully remove the CD /DVD holder tha t came with the product. The CD/DVD ho lder is stored below t he main input tray. 2. Securely snap t he inkjet printabl e media onto the CD/DVD hol der with the printable side up.
4. Push the CD/DVD holder into the product until the lines on the C D/DVD holder li ne up to the white line s on the CD/DV D tray. NOTE: The product pu lls the CD/DVD holde r while printing on the media. The CD/DVD holder migh t protrude about 7.5 cm (3 inches) at the back of the product.
2. Securely snap t he inkjet printabl e media onto the CD/DVD hol der with the printable side up. The CD/DV D should be placed on the ring at the end of the holder wit h the arrows. 3. Flip the CD/DVD holder ring o ver the CD/DVD. 4. Lower the CD/DVD tray .
5. Push the CD/DVD holder into the product until the lines on the C D/DVD holder li ne up to the white line s on the CD/DV D tray. NOTE: The product pu lls the CD/DVD holde r while printing on the media. The CD/DVD holder migh t protrude about 7.5 cm (3 inches) at the back of the product.
• Adjust the paper-w idth guide in the input tray to fit snugly against all paper. Make sure the paper-widt h guide does not bend the paper in the input tray. • Do not force paper too far forward in the input tray. • Use paper types that are recommended for the product.
7 Print from your computer The HP Phot osmart can be used with an y software application tha t allows printi ng. You can print a range of proje cts, such as borderless images, newsletters, greeti ng cards, iron-on transfers, and posters.
Make the HP Photosmart the default printer You can set the HP Photosmart as the default printer to use f rom all softw are applications. This means that the HP Photosmart is automatically sele cted in the printer li st when you select Print f rom the File menu in a software application.

Printing in maximum dp i takes longer than printing with ot her settings and requires a large amount of di sk space. To print in Ma ximum dpi mode 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your software application, cli ck Print .
To print dir ectly onto a CD/DVD 1. Use the software that came with the product to create and print a CD/DVD lab el. 2. When prompted, loa d a CD/D VD into the CD/ DVD holder on the product. 3. Push the CD/D VD holder into th e product until the lines on the C D/DVD holder line up to the white lines on the C D/DVD tray.
7. For binding, do o ne of the following: • For binding on the to p like a notebo ok or calendar, select the Flip Pages Up check box. This causes the odd and even p ages of your document to pri nt opposite of each other top-to-bottom.
To print a multiple-p age documen t as a bookle t 1. Load paper into the input tray . The paper shou ld be thick enough so that the image s do not show through to the other side. 2. On the File menu in your software application , click Print . 3. Make sure the product is the selected printer .

Print a multiple-page doc ument in reve rse order Because of the way the paper feeds through the HP Photosmart, the first page that prints is print side up at t he bottom of the stack. U sually this means you need to put th e printed pages in the correct order.
Reverse an imag e for iron-on transfers This feature revers es an image so you can use it for iron-on transfers. This feature is also useful for tr ansparencies whe n you want to make notations on the back of th e transparency without scratching the original.
6. In the Basic Options area, from the Paper Type drop-down list, se lect More . Then select the app ropriate paper type. TIP: If you want to m a ke nota tions on the back of the transparencies a nd erase them later wi thout scratching the ori ginal, click the Advan ced tab, and select the Mirror Ima ge check box.
Print a poster You can create a poster by print ing a document on multipl e pages. The HP Photosmart prints dotted l ines on some pages to indic ate where to trim the pages before taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray.
To print a Web page 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the main in put tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web bro w ser, click Print . The Print dial og box appears. 3. Make sure the product is the selected printer . 4. If your Web browser support s it, select the items on the Web p age that you want to include in t he printout.
8 Use the photo features The HP Photosmart is equipped wit h memory card slot s and a front USB port that enable you to print or edit photo s from a memory card or storage de vice (such as a keychain drive, portable hard dri ve, or a digital came ra in storage mo de) without uploading your photos to a compu ter first.

TIP: To achieve th e best print qual ity, HP recomm ends using HP papers that are specifically de signed for the typ e of project you are printing along with genu ine HP ink. HP papers and H P ink are specifically desig ned to work well toge ther to provide high-quali ty output.
5. Press Print Photos . 6. Press the left arrow or right arrow to scroll through the layout opt ions, and press OK when the option you want is hig hlighted: 4 x 6 5 x 7 TIP: While the photo is printi ng, you can continu e scrolling through the photos on your memory card.

9 Maintain the HP Photosmart The HP Photosmart requi res little maintenan ce. You might need to repl ace ink cartridges, clean the print he ad, or align the printer from tim e to time. This section provides instructions for keepin g the HP Photosmart in top w orking condition.
• Store ink cartridges at room t e mperature (1 5.6-26.6° C or 60-78° F). • If you notice a sign ificant decrease in print quality, check the estim ated ink levels remaining in the in k cartridges. Replace any in k cartridges tha t are low on ink.
To check the ink leve ls from the HP Photos mart Software 1. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , and th en click Printer Toolbox .
The print carria ge moves to the center of the product. NOTE: Wait until the p rint carriage stops moving be fore proceeding. 3. Press the tab on the ink cartridge t o release it, and then remove it from the slo t. If you are replacin g the black ink cartridge, push the tab of the ink cartridge on the far right.
5. Twist the orange cap t o snap it off. 6. Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide t he ink cartridge into the empty slot until it clicks into pl ace and is seated firmly in the slot. CAUTION: Do not lift the latch h andle on the print carriage to install the ink cartridges.
Clean the pr int head If your printed out put is streaked, or is mi ssing, or has any incorre ct or miss ing colors, the print he ad may need to be cleaned. This process uses ink to att empt to unclog and clean th e nozzles in the print he ad. This might take a few m inutes and will use one or more sheet s of paper.
4. Click the Device Ser vices tab. 5. Click Align the Printer . The product prints a t e st page, a ligns the print head, and calibrates t he printer. Recycle or discard the page. Remove ink fr om your skin and clothing Follow these instruct ions to remove ink from your skin and clothin g : Surface Remedy Skin Wash the area with an abrasive soap.
• History log : con tains information that might be used for diagnostic purposes if you need to call HP custo mer support. Clean the HP Photosmart Use a soft cloth or slightly moi stened sponge to w ipe dust, smudges, and stains off the case. The interior of th e product does not requ ire cleaning.
10 Shop for ink supplies For a list of ink cartrid ge numbers, see the printed do cumentation that came with the HP Photosmart. You can also use the soft ware that came with the HP Photosmart to find out the reorde r number for all th e ink cartridges.

• If you are using a power st rip, make sure the p ower strip is turned on. Or, try plugging the p roduct directly into a power ou tlet. • Test the power out let to make sure it is working. Plug i n an appliance that you know works, and see if the app liance has power.
Solution 5: Contact HP supp ort for service Solution: If you have complete d all of the steps provide d in the previo us solutions and are still having a proble m, contact HP suppor t for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and then click Contact HP for technical support.
After setting up the produ ct, it does not print Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue. Solutions are listed in order, w ith the most likely solution first. If the f i rst solutio n does not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the i ssue is resolved.
NOTE: You will be prom pted to set bot h the language and the co untry/region settings, by u sing the following pr ocedure. To set your langu age and country/r egion 1. Press and hol d the Red-Eye Removal butto n and then press the Print Photos button.
When I insert the CD-ROM into my computer’s CD-ROM drive, not hing happens Solution: If the installa tion does not run automat ically, you can start it manuall y. To start the installation from a W indows computer 1. From the Wi ndows Start menu, click Run (or click Accessories , and then Run ).
3. Verify that the U SB cable and power cord are plugge d in. 4. Click Retry to retry the connection. 5. Continue wit h the installation and restart the computer when prompt ed. Cause: The USB connection betwe e n the prod uct and the computer failed.
c . Remove all the item s that are related to the HP Photosm art Software. CAUTION: If the computer is manufact u red by HP or Compa q , do not remove any applicat ions other than those li sted below.
h . Click Apply , and then click Close . NOTE: If you receive a message stating Access is denied while making changes, clic k OK and continue. The message wil l not prevent you from making the changes. i . Click Restart to apply the changes to the computer during the next restart.
The registration screen does not appear Solution: You can access the registration (Sign up now) screen from t he Windows taskbar by clicking Start , pointing to Programs or All Programs , HP , Photosmart D5400 seri es , and then clicking Produc t Registration .
When the softwa re installation is complete, t he HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon appears in the Windows system tray. Paper jams To help avoid p aper jams, follow these gu idelines: • Remove print ed papers from the out put tray frequently. • Prevent curled or wrinkled photo paper by storing all unu sed photo paper fl at in a resealable ba g.
To clear a paper jam from the rear do or 1. Press in the tab on the l eft side of the rea r door to release t he door. Remove the door by pulling i t away from the p roduct.
• Always hold photo pape r by the edge s. Fingerprints on photo paper can re duce print quality. • Do not use paper th at is heavily textur ed. It can caus e graphics or text to print improperly.
Solution 1: Make sure you ar e using genuine H P ink cartridges Solution: Check to see if your ink cartridge s are genu ine HP ink cartridges. HP recommends tha t you use genuine H P ink cartridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are designed and teste d with HP printers to help you easil y produce great results, time after time.
For more information, see: •“ Recommended pap ers for printing” on pag e 15 •“ Informatio n on paper” on page 81 Cause: The wrong kind of paper w a s loaded i n the input tray. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 4: Check th e ink levels Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink cartr idges.
Solution 6: Align the printer Solution: Align the prin ter. Aligning the printer can help en sure excellent print q uality. To align the printer fr om the HP Photosmart Software 1. Load lette r, A4, or legal unu sed plain white pap er into the input tray.
Ink is not filling the tex t or graphic s comple tely Try the following solutio n s if the in k is not fi lling the text or image completely so that it appears that parts are mi ssing or blank.
Solution 3: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check t he paper type setting to make sure it matches the type of paper loaded i n the input t ray. • Check the print qua lity setting and make sure it is not set to o low.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 6: Contact HP suppor t Solution: Contac t HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and then click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support.
Print the image with a high print quality sett ing, such as Best or Maximum dpi . For more information, see: •“ Change the prin t speed or qual ity” on page 34 •“ Print using Maximum dpi” on page 40 Cause: The prin t quality setting was set too low.
Cause: The print quality setting wa s set too low. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 3: Align the printer Solution: Align t he printer. Aligning the p rinter can help ensure exce llent print quality. To align the printer from the HP Photosmart Software 1.
Cause: There was a problem with the print head. Printouts are fa ded or have dull colors Try the followin g solutions if the colors in you r printou t are not as bright and inten se as you expected.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 3: Clean the pr int head Solution: If t he previous solution s did not resolve the issue, try cl eaning the print head. After cleaning the print head, print a se lf-test report. Evaluate the sel f-test report to see if the print q uality problem still exi sts.

If this di d not solve th e issue, try the next solutio n. Solution 3: Ensu re that the rear door is securely ins talled Solution: Make sure that the rear door is securely installed. If you removed the rear do or to clear a paper jam, replace it. G ently push the door forward until it sn aps into place.
Paper is not picked up from the input tray Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions ar e listed in orde r, with the m ost likely solution f irst. If the first solution does not sol ve the problem, con tinue trying th e remaining solu tions until the issue is resolved.
Make sure you have the f ollowing materials available: • A lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fi bers. • Distilled, f iltered, or bottled wa ter (tap water m ight contain contaminant s that can damage the print ca rtridges).
NOTE: For this issue, there is not a problem with yo ur ink supplies. Theref ore, replacing the ink cartrid ges or print head is not necessary. • Solution 1: Use TrueType or OpenType fo nts • Solu.
Solution 3: Clean the print head Solution: If the previou s solutions did n ot resolve the issue, try cleani ng the print head. After cleaning the prin t head, print a self-test report. Evaluate the self-test report to see if the pri nt quality problem still exi sts.
• The product i s not responding • The product prints meaning less characters • Nothing happen s when I try to print • The pages in my document ca me out in the wrong order • The margins are.
Solution 3: Tuck the flap s to avoid paper jams Solution: To avoid paper jam s, tuck the flaps insid e the envelopes. Cause: The flap s might get caught in the rolle rs. Borderless pri nting produces unexp ected results Solution: Try printing the ima ge from the phot o imaging software that came with the product.
Solution 3: Select the correct pri nter Solution: Make sure you have selected the correct printer in your software application . TIP: You can set the product as the default printer to ensu re that the printer i s automatically select ed when you select Print in the File menu of your different software appli cations.
Cause: A delet ed print job was in the queue. If this di d not solve th e issue, try the next solutio n. Solution 7: Clear the paper jam Solution: Clear the paper jam. For more information, see: “ Clear paper jams ” on page 80 Cause: The product had a paper jam.
sure the other end o f the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on your computer. After the cable is connected properly, t urn off the product and then on again. If the connecti ons are secure, and nothin g has printed several minutes after you se nt a print job to the product , check the stat us of the product.
Solution 2: P rint a previously saved version of th e document Solution: Try printing anot her document from the same software a p plicati on. If this works, then try printing a previously saved version of the document that is not corrupt. Cause: The docume nt was corrupt.
TIP: You can set the product as the default printer to ensu re that the printer i s automatically select ed when you select Print in the File menu of your different software appli cations. Cause: The product was not the sele cted printer. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution.
Solution 7: Clear the paper jam Solution: Clear the paper jam. For more information, see: “ Clear paper jams ” on page 80 Cause: The product had a paper jam. If this di d not solve th e issue, try the next solutio n. Solution 8: Ma ke sure the print ca rriage can move fr eely Solution: Unplug the po wer cable if it is not alread y unplugged.
Cause: The computer was not commun icating with the product. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 10: Rese t the product Solution: Turn off the product, and then unplug the power cord. Plu g the power cord back in, and then pr ess the On button to turn o n the product.
Make sure the margin set tings for the document do not exceed the p rintable area of the product. To check your marg in settings 1. Preview your print job before s ending it to the pr oduct. In most softwa re applications, cli ck the File menu, and then click Print Preview .
Make sure that you rem ove all paper from the input tray before loading the envelopes. For more information, see: “ Load envelopes” on page 23 Cause: A stack of enve lopes was loaded incorr ectly. Text or graphics are cut off at the edge of the pag e Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue.
Solution 2: Check the layout of the doc ument Solution: Make sure the layout of the document you are tryi ng to print fit s on a pa per size supported by the product. To preview the print layout 1. Load the correct paper size i nto the input t ray. 2.
A blank page came out wh ile printing Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions ar e listed in orde r, with the m ost likely solution f irst. If the first solution does not sol ve the problem, con tinue trying th e remaining solu tions until the issue is resolved.
My memory card no longer works in my digital came ra Solution: Reformat your memory card in your camera or format your memory card on a Windows computer by selecti ng the FAT format inst ead of FAT32. For more information, see the documentation that came with your digital camera.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 3: Remove th e additional memor y card Solution: If you have inserted more than one memory card, remove one o f the memory cards. You can use only one m emory card at a time. If you have a memory card a nd a storage device connected , remove the storage device.
Solution 1: Rem ove and reinse rt the memory car d Solution: Remove and reinsert th e memory card. You might have insert ed it incorrectly.
