Buttons and lights Use the printer buttons to turn the printer on and off, cancel a print job , restart a job, and open HP Photosmart So ftware. The print er lights give you visual cues abou t the status of the printer.
Power button an d light Use the Power button to turn the printer on a nd off. It can take a few seconds for the printer to turn on after you press th e Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flashes w hen the printer is processing. CAUTION: Always use the Power button to turn the printer on and off.
Print Cartridge Status lights The Print Cartridg e Status lights are lo cated in the center of the control pan el. For more information, see Print cartridges .
1. The left status ligh t represents the tri-co lor print cartridge, which is installed in the left side of the print cartri dge cradle. • The light is on an d solid when the t ri-color print cartri dge is low on ink. • The light flash es when the tri-color p rint cartridge needs to be service d.
Resume button and lig ht The Resume light f lashes when an action i s required, such as loading paper or clearing a paper jam. Wh en the problem is sol ved, press the Resume b utton to con tinue printin g.
NOTE: You can also use th e front USB port to download imag es from external card readers, USB flash drives, and other USB devices. Cancel icon The printer has a Cancel i con located to t he left of the Power butto n. When the printe r is busy, the Power butt on functions li ke a Cancel button.
Unfold the paper trays To unfold the paper trays 1. Lower the input tray. 2. Lower the output tray. 3. Pull out the out put-tray extension. Chapter 3 16 Get started.

Raise the output tray to load paper or other medi a. Lower the output tr ay before printing. To prevent paper f rom falling ou t of the output t ray, pull out bo th sections of the output- tray extension. I f you are printing in the Fast Draft mode, raise the output-tray extensi on stop.
4. Raise the outpu t tray. 5. Raise the inpu t tray. Print cartridges Three print cartridge s can be used with the p rinter. 1 Black print cartridge 2 Tri-color pr int cartri dge 3 Photo print cartrid.
Use print cartridges The print cartri dges can be used in the following w ays: • Everyday printing : Use the black and t ri-color print cartridges fo r everyday print jobs.
NOTE: When the printer o perates in ink-backup m ode, a message i s displayed on screen. If the message is displayed an d two print cartridges are inst alled in the printer, verify that the prote ctive piece of plasti c tape has been removed from each print cartridge.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connect s to the computer wit h a universal serial bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2.0 compati ble cable. For instructions ab out connecting the printer with a USB cable, se e the Setup G uide that came with the printe r.
5 Print using the Photosmart Essential button To quickly print photos, use the Photosmart Essential butto n. • About the Photosmart Essential button • About the HP Ph otosmart Software About the Photosmart Essential button The Photosmart Essentia l button is locate d on the front panel of the printer.
6 Print photos using the front USB port You can transfer photo s from a digital ca mera, external card reader, or USB flash drive to your computer, and then print them.
To print from the front USB port 1. Load photo pape r into the prin ter. For instructions abou t loading photo p aper, click one of th e following op tions: • Print borderless photos • Print photos with a border 2. Connect your camera o r other USB device to the front U SB port using a USB ca ble.

Prepare to print 1. Raise the outp ut tray. 2. Slide the paper guide all the way to the lef t. 3. Verify that the photo paper is flat . 4. Place the photo paper in the right side of th e input tray. The side to be printed on should face down an d the short edge should po int towards the p rinter.
4. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Photo Printing-Border less , and then sele ct the following o ptions: • Print Quality : Normal or Be st NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Features tab, and then click Maximum dpi in the Print Quality drop-down list.

Print posters Guidelines • For poster printing, secti ons of the poster are automati cally arranged on individual sheets that can be taped together . After the sections of a poster have been printed, trim the edges of the sheets and tape the sheet s together.
4. In the Poster Printing drop-down list, sel ect the number of shee ts for the poster. 5. Click the Select Tiles button. 6. Check that the number of til es that are selected matches the num ber of sheets for the poster, and t hen click OK . 7. Select any other print sett ings that you want, an d then click OK .
Print NOTE: If your software program includes an iron-on transfer print ing feature, foll ow the instructions that a re provided with the sof tware program.

NOTE: When you select a printing shortcut the appropriat e printing opt ions are automatically displ ayed. You can leave them as is or change them. Use printing shortcuts Use the Printing Shortcuts ta.
To use Fast/Econo mical printi ng 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Fast/ Economical Printing . 4. Specify the print setting s that you want, an d then click OK .
Print quality settings • Fast Draft produc es draft-quality ou tput at the faste st printing spe ed, while usin g the least amount of i nk. • Fast Norm al produces higher qual ity output th an the Fast Draft set ting and p rints more quickly than the Normal setting.
To print in Ma ximum dpi mode 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Pape r Type drop-down list, click More , and then select t he appropriat e paper type. 4. In the Print Quality drop-down list, click Maximum dpi .
3. In the Size drop-do wn list, select Custom . The Custom Paper Size dialog box is displayed. 4. In the Name box, type a name for th e custom paper size. 5. In the Width and Length boxes, type the dim ensions of the custom pape r size. The minimum and maximum dimensions are di splayed beneath Width and Le ngth.
To previ ew a printed document 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Features or the Color tab. 3. Select the Show preview before pr inting check box. 4. Select any other print sett ings that you want, an d then click OK . Before the documen t prints, a preview is displayed.
To print a two-sided document wi th a book bindin g ▲ Follow the instructions fo r basic two-sided pr inting. To print a two-sided document with a tablet binding 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Two-si ded printing drop-down list , click Manual .
10 Printer software • Make the HP D eskjet the def ault printer . • Set the default print set tings for all documents. •U s e t h e Printer Properties dialog box to select pr inting opti ons. •U s e t h e What's This? help to learn mo re about specific prin t settings.
To save time when printi ng, set the defau lt print settings to options that you use o ften. That way, you do not have to speci fy the options every tim e you use the printer. To change the defa ult print settings 1. Double-click t he HP Digital Im aging Monitor icon on the right side of t he Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to the Pri nter Properties dialog box can vary depending on th e software prog ram you are using. What's This? help Use the What's This ? help to learn about the features that you se e on the Printer Properties dialog box.
Download printer software updates Download the latest printer so ftwa re update every few mo nths to ensure you h ave the latest f eatures and im provements.

You can find the sele ction number in thre e places: • Selection num ber label: Look at t he label on the print cartridge that you are rep lacing. 1 Selection number label • Printer document ation: For a list of print cartridge selecti on numbers, see the reference guide th at came with the prin ter.
5. Press down on the print cart ridge, and then slide it out of the print cart ridge cradle. 6. Remove the replacement print cartri dge from its packaging and ca refully remove the plastic tape. Hold th e print cartridge so that the cop per strips are on the bottom and facing towa rd the printer.
7. Slide the print cart ridge at a slight upwa rd angle into th e cradle until the cartridge snaps into pl ace. 8. Close the prin ter cover. Align the print cartri dges for optimum print qu ality. For information a bout storing print cartri dges, see Mai ntain print cartridges .
To clean the prin t cartridges 1. Open the printe r Toolb ox . 2. Click Clean the Print Cartri dges . 3. Click Clean , a nd then follow t he onscreen instructi ons. If your documents are st ill faded after cle aning, manually cl ean the print cartridge contacts .
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet eject s ink onto the paper in a fine mist, ink sm udges will eventually appear. To remove smudges, stai ns, or dried in k from the exterior 1. Turn off the HP Deskjet, and then disconnect the power cord.
To prepare to clean 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait until the p rint cartridge cradle mo ves to the right side of the HP Deskjet and is idle and qu iet. 3. Remove the print cartridg es and place them on a piece of pap er, with the cop per strips facing up.
Print cartridge storage and handling Follow these gu idelines to help ma intain HP prin t cartridges and e nsure consistent pri nt quality: • Install the cartrid ge on or before the Install by date, which is printed on the cart ridge package.
To remove the pr int cartridge from th e print cartridge protector 1. Press down and back on the t op of the protect or to release the print cartri dge. 2. Slide the prin t cartridge out of the p rotector. CAUTION: Do not drop the p rint cartridge. Drop ping the print cartridge can damage it.

"Print cartridge is in the wrong slot" me ssage If you receive thi s error message, the print cartridge is installe d in the wrong side of the print cartridg e cradle. Foll ow the instructions in " Print cartridge is in the wron g slot" message to resolve th e probl em.
Solution: To resolve the pr oblem 1. Make sure that no USB devices ot her than the printer, t he keyboard, and t he mouse are connect ed to the compu ter. 2. Disconnect and reconne ct the USB cable. 3. Make sure that the printer i s connected directly to a USB port on the compute r (instead of through a U SB hub).
Printer name doe s not appear Solution: If the pri nter software seems to install correc tly, but the pri nter name does not appear in the l ist of printers wh en you click Print on the File menu or in th e Printers folder in Control Panel, try reinsta lling the printe r software.
What the flashing light means The printer lights i ndicate the prin ter status. 1 Power light 2 Print Cartridge Status ligh ts 3 Resume l ight Power light is flashing 1 Power light If the Power light is flashi ng, the printer is preparing to print . The light stops flashi ng when the printer has received all dat a.
Resume light is flashing 1 Resume light If the Resume li ght is flashing , check the followin g conditions: • The printer migh t be out of paper. Place paper in the inpu t tray, and then press the Resume button. • There might be a pape r jam. For information about clearing a pa per jam, see Paper jam .
Print Cartridge Status lights are on or flashing The printer has two print cart ridge status lig hts. 1. The left status ligh t represents the tri-co lor print cartridge, which is installed in the left side of the print cartri dge cradle. 2. The right status li ght represents the bla ck or the photo print cart ridge.
Front USB port lights a re flashing If the front U SB port lights are flashing , follow the i nstructions in Fron t USB port ligh ts are flashing . Printer does not print • Verify the following • .
• If you are connectin g the printer through a USB hu b, make sure the hub is turned on. If the hub is on, t ry connecting the p rinter directly to your comp uter. • Try connecting the USB cable to an other USB port on your computer. After you check the connections, try restarting your compu ter.
If there are no loo se or broken parts, fol low these steps: 1. Check for and remove any obstacles, such as packi ng tape or materials, that prevent the print cartridg es from moving back and f orth. 2. Make sure the print cart ridges are installed securely in the pri nt cartridge cradle.
For information abou t updating the p rinter software, see Do wnload printer softwa re updates . Computer do es not meet system requir ements If your computer does n ot have enough RAM or a l arge amount of free spa ce on the hard drive, the prin ter processing tim e will be long er.
3. Check the list of prin t cartridges that can be used in the printer. a . Open the printe r Toolbox . b . Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. c . Click the Print Cartri dge Information button and view the list of print cartridge selection numbe rs.
"Print cartridg e is in the wrong slo t" message Cause: If you receive this error message, the print cartridge is in stalled in the wrong side of the print cartri dge cradle. Solution: Always instal l the tri-color print ca rtridge in the left print ca rtridge cradle compartment.
removed from each print cart ridge. When plastic ta pe covers the print cart ridge contacts, the pr inter cannot detect that the print cartridge is in stalled.
4. Remove the rear access door. Press th e handle to the right , and then pull out t he door. 5. Remove any paper that is insid e the printer by pulli ng it out from th e back of the printer. If you are prin ting labels , verify that a labe l did not b ecome detached fro m the label sheet while passi ng through the pri nter.
Printer does not feed paper Solution: Try one or more of the followi ng solutions: • Reduce the number of sheets in the input tray. • Remove the pape r from the inp ut tray, and then reload it.
Paper mig ht be loade d imprope rly The printer might prin t on multiple shee ts of paper at once if t he paper is loaded t oo far toward the back of t he printer or if the p aper guide is not po sitioned firml y against the paper.
Horizontal li nes appear o n a photo Solution: If light or dark hori zontal lines ap pe ar on photos, follow thi s procedure: 1. Clean the p rint cartridges. 2. Reprint the pho to. 3. If horizontal line s still occur, perform a print quality calibration .
Verify that the phot o paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curle d, place the paper in a plastic bag and ge ntly bend it in th e opposite direct ion of the curl unti l the paper lies flat. If the pr oblem persists, then u se photo paper that is not curled.
• If printing in grayscale, select High Quality un der Print in Grays cale on the Color tab. • Do not print b orderless documents i n ink-backup mode. Alw ays have two print cartridges inst alled in the pri nter when printing borderless document s.
3. If horizontal li nes still occur, perf orm a print quali ty calibrat ion . A black and a tri-color prin t cartridge must be installed for print qu ality calibratio n. 4. Reprint th e photo. Image is printed at an angle Solution: Verify that no problem exists w ith the source ima ge.
Fading occurs on the e dges of a photo Verify that the photo paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curled, pl ace the paper in a plastic bag and g ently bend it in the op posite direction o f the curl until th e paper lies flat. If the prob lem persists, then use photo paper t hat is not curled.
For most paper types If the photo has a n unwanted border , try one of the foll owing solutions: • Align the print cartridg es . • Open the Printer Properties dialog box , click the Features tab, .
Print quality is poor If you are having prob lems with print qu ality, try the solu tions in this sect ion and observe the follow ing guideli nes: • Replace refille d or empty cartri dges. • Check the device set tings to make sure that the print mode and paper sele ction is correct for the paper an d the task.
Prints are faded Solution: • Verify that neither of t he print cartridg es is low on ink. For more info rmation, see View estimated ink levels . If a print cart ridge is lo w on ink, consider replacing t he print cartridge. F or the correct part nu mbers, see the reference guide that came with the pri nter.
• The print cartridg es might be out of ink. R eplace one or both empt y print cartridges. For more info rmation, se e View estimated ink le vels . • You might be trying to print a bo rderless docu ment with only th e black print cartridge installed.
Envelope is printed a t an angle Solution: 1. Slide the flap insid e the envelope bef ore loading it in the print er. 2. Confirm that t he paper guide f its firmly again st the edge of the envelope.

If you have not bought HP (Hewlett-Packard) D4200 yet, this is a good time to familiarize yourself with the basic data on the product. First of all view first pages of the manual, you can find above. You should find there the most important technical data HP (Hewlett-Packard) D4200 - thus you can check whether the hardware meets your expectations.
