To install the Windows HP Photosmart Software on a networ ked computer 1. Quit all appl ications running on your computer. 2. Insert the installation CD th at came with the produ ct into the CD-ROM drive o n your computer and f ollow the onscreen instructio ns.
Set up the HP Phot osmart for faxing Before you begin setting up the HP Photo smart for faxing, determi ne which kind of phone system your country/region uses. The instructio ns for setting up th e HP Photosmart for faxing differ depending on whether you have a serial- or parallel-type phone system.
If you are unsure which kind of telephone system you ha ve (serial or parallel), check with your telephon e company. See the following se ctions to set up the HP Photosmart for faxing: • Choose the .

NOTE: If your home or office setup i s not described in this section, set up the HP Photosmart as yo u would a regular analog phone. Make sure you use the phone cord supplied in t he box to connect o ne end to your t elephone wall jack and the ot her end to the port labeled 1-LINE on th e back of the HP Photosmart.

When the phone rings, the HP Phot osmart will answe r automatically afte r the number of rings you set in the Rings to Answer setting. Then it wi ll begin emitting fax reception tones to the sen ding fax machine and receiv e the fax.
3. Connect the DS L filter cord to the tele phone wall jack. NOTE: If you have oth er office equipment or services attached to this phone line , such as a distinctive rin g service, answering machine, or voice mail, see th e appropriate sect ion in this section for additional setup guidelines.
Case D: Fax with a distinctive rin g service on the s ame line If you subscribe to a distinctive ring service (through your tele phone company) that allows you to have multiple phone num bers on one phone line, each w ith a different ring pattern, set up the HP Photosma rt as described in this section.
Case E: Shared voic e/fax line If you receive bot h voice calls and fax calls at the sam e phone number, and you have no other office equipm ent (or voice mail) on this phone line, set up the H P Photosmart as described in this section.
4. Plug your ph one into the tele phone wall jack. 5. Do one of the fo llowing, depending on your phone system: • If you have a parallel-type phone system , remove the white plug from the port labeled 2-EXT on t he back of the HP Photosm art, and then conne ct a phone to this port.
To set up the HP Ph otosmar t with voice mail 1. Using the p hone cord supplied in th e box with the HP Pho tosmart, connect o ne end to your telephone wall jack, then connect the other en d to the port labeled 1- LINE on the back of the HP Pho tosmart.
To set up the HP Ph otosmart with a comp uter dial-up mo dem 1. Remove the wh ite plug from the port label ed 2-EXT on the ba ck of the H P Photosmart. 2. Find the phone cord th at connects from the back of you r computer (your computer dial-up modem) to a telephone wall j ack.

5. If your modem software is set to receive faxes to your com puter automatical ly, turn off that setting. NOTE: If you do not turn of f the automatic fa x reception setti ng in your modem software, the HP Photos mart will not be abl e to recei ve faxes.
Case I: Shared v oice/fax line with answerin g machine If you receive both voice calls and fax calls at t he same phone number, and you also have an answerin g machine that an swers voice ca lls at this ph one number, se t up the HP Photosmart as described in this section.

NOTE: You cannot receive fa xes automatical ly if you have a voice mai l service at the same phone number yo u use for fax call s. You must receive faxes manually; this means you must be available to respond in person to incoming fax ca lls.

5 Paper basics You can load many differe nt types and sizes of pape r in the HP Photosmart , including letter or A4 pa per, photo pap er, transparencies, and envelopes.
Recommended papers for printing If you want the best print quality, HP reco mmends using HP papers t hat are specifically designed for t he type of project you are printing. Depending on your cou ntry/region, som e of these papers might not be avai lable.
HP Iron-On Tra nsfers HP Iron-on Transfers (for co lor fabrics or for l ight or white fabrics ) are the ideal solution for creating custom T-shi rts from your digital ph otos. HP Premium Ink jet Transpare ncy Film HP Premium Inkjet Transparency Film makes your col or presentations vivid and even more impressive.

NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicato rs provide estimates for plannin g purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartrid ge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace the i nk cartridges unt il print qual ity becomes una cceptable.

Make sure you used the phone cord supplied in the box w ith the product to co nnect to the telepho ne wall jack. One end of this special 2-wi re phone cord should be connect ed to the port labeled 1- LINE on the back of th e product and the other en d to your telephone wa ll jack, as shown below.

The print carri age moves to the center of the prod uct. NOTE: Wait until the print carriage st ops moving before procee ding. 3. Locate the ink cartridge that i s indicated in the error m essage, and then press the tab on the ink cartridge to release it from the slot.
5. Wipe the cont acts with a dry swab or lint -free cloth. 6. On the inside of t he product, locate the co ntacts in the print head. The contacts lo ok like a set of four co pp er or gold-colored pins positi oned to meet the contacts on the ink cartridge.
Solution 4: Repla ce the ink cartridge Solution: Replac e the indicated ink cartridge. If your cartridge is st ill under warranty, cont act HP support for servic e or replacement. CAUTION: HP recommends that you do not remove a n ink cartridge until a replacement is ready to install. HP recommends tha t you use genuine HP i nk cartridges. Genui ne HP ink cart ridges are designed and teste d with HP printers to help yo u easily produce great results, time after time.
Previously used genui ne HP cartridge Solution: Check the print qu ality of the current print job . If it is not satisfactory, try cleaning the pri nthead to see if th at improves th e quality. To clean the printhead fro m the control panel 1. Press Setup .
3. Remove all of the ink cartridges and p lace them on a piece of pa per with the ink opening point ing up. 4. Lift the latch h andle on the print carriage until it stops.
6. Clean the printhead. There are three a reas of the printhe ad that need to be clea ned: the plastic ramp s on both sides of the i nk nozzles, the edge betwe en the nozzles and the electrical contacts, and the electrical contacts.
b . Use a fresh, lightly dampened, l int-free cloth to wipe any accumu lated ink and debris from the edg e between the nozzles and the contacts. c . Use a fresh, light ly dampened, lint -free cloth to wipe the plastic ramps on both sides of the nozzles.
c . Wipe the area dr y with a dry lint-fre e cloth before proc eeding to the n ext step. 8. Make sure the latch handle is rai sed, and then reinse rt the printhead. 9. Carefully l ower the latch h andle. NOTE: Make sure you lower the lat ch handle before reinserti ng the ink cartridges.
Cause: The print head or ink cartridges were not installed correct ly. If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Contact HP s upport Solution: Contact HP support for service.
