Drive handling CAUTION: Drives are fragile components that must be handle d with care. To prevent damage to the computer, damage to a d r ive, or loss of information, observe these precau tions: Before removing or inserting a hard dri v e, shut down the computer.

Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conduct ive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. Make special note of each screw's size and location during removal and replacement.
PCID label The PCID label p rovides the informatio n required to properly reset the notebook firm ware (BIOS) back to factory shipped specifications when re pla cing the system board. The label may have a different number of characters depending on the operating system on the computer.

Display subcomponents (bezel, webcam, panel) This section describes re moving display subcompon en ts that do not require that you remo ve the entire display assemb ly from the computer. You can remove the display bezel, webcam/microp h one module, and display panel while the display a ssembly is still attac hed to the computer.

5. To remove the web cam/microphone module: a. Remove the two broadhead Philli ps PM2.5×2.5 screws (1) that secure the display panel and hinges to th e enclosure, and then tilt the display p anel (2) away from th e enclosure as far as possible.
b. Disconnect the module cable from the module. 38 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
c. Remove the webcam/microphon e module. (The module is attached to the display enclosure with double- sided tape.) Component replacement procedures 39.
6. To remove the d isplay panel: a. Remove the four Phi llips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the di splay hinges to the display panel, and then tilt the display pa nel down (2) until it rests on the computer.
c. Release the webcam/micro phone module cable th at is secured to the back of the display panel with adhe sive material, and then remove the displa y panel (3) . Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble and insta ll the display bezel, webcam/microphone module, and display panel.

To remove the WLAN module: 1. Loosen the memory modul e/wireless module compartment cover screw (1) , and then lift up on the tab (2) and remove the cover (3) . The memory module/wireles s module compartment cover is available in the Plastics Kit. Fo r more i nformation about the Plasti cs Kit, see Plastics kit on page 22 .
4. Remove the WLAN modu le by pulling the module awa y from the slot at an angle (3) . NOTE: If the WLAN ante nnas are not conne cted to the terminals on the WLAN module, the protective sleeves must be insta lled on the antenna conne ctors, as shown in th e following illustration.

To remove the h ard drive: 1. Loosen the hard drive cover screw (1) , and then lift up (2) and remove the cover (3) . The har d drive compartment cover is available in the Plasti cs Kit. For more informat ion about the Plastics Kit, se e Plastics kit on page 22 .
6. Remove the ha rd drive (3) fro m the bracket . Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the h ard drive. Component replacement procedures 49.
RTC battery Description Spare part number RTC battery 449137-001 Before r emoving the RTC bat t ery, foll ow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibern ation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
Optical drive NOTE: The optical drive spare part kit includes the rear optical d rive bracket but d oes not include the optical drive ca ble or cable brack et.
3. Remove the optical drive (3) by sliding it out of the optical drive bay. 4. If it is necessary to replace the optical drive br acket on th e rear of the optical drive, position the optical drive with th e rear panel to ward you. 5. Remove the two Phillips PM2.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the Phillips PM2.5× 4.0 screw that secures the keyboard to the computer just below the WLAN module sl ot. 2. Rest and secure the computer on its left side wi th the bottom toward you, and then pa rtially open the computer.
4. Insert a screwdriver or similar small tool into the keyboard release hole (2) , a nd then press on the back of the keyboard un til the key board disengages from the computer.
7. Release the zero inserti on force (ZIF) conne ctor (1) to which the keyboard cab le is attached, an d then disconnect the keyb oard cable (2) from the system board.
Top cover NOTE: The top cover spare pa rt kit includes the To uchPad. However, it does not include the TouchPad cabl es. The TouchPad cables are inclu ded with th e TouchPad button boar d. For more information on the T ouchPad butt on board, see TouchPad button board on page 63 .
2. Remove the five Phillips PM2. 5×6.0 screws that secure the top co ver to the computer. 3. Remove the four Philli ps PM1.6×2.0 screws (1) and the Phillips PM2.
4. Remove the eleven Phillips PM 2.5×4.0 screws that secure th e top cover to the computer. 5. Turn the computer right-side up with the fron t toward you , and then open the computer. 6. Release the ZIF conne ctors to the power button board cable (1) a nd the TouchPad button board cable (2) , and then disconnect the cables from the system board.
7. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5× 6.0 screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 8. Lift the rear edge of the top cover (1) until the left and right sides disengag e from the base enclosure . 9. Remove the top cover (2) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the top cover.

Display assembly This section describes removing th e display assembly in its entirety and d isassembling all the displa y subcomponents. If you only need to remove the display b ezel, we bcam/microph one module, or display panel, you d o not need to remo ve the entire disp lay assembly from th e computer.
● USB board (see USB board on page 67 ) ● Power connector cable (see Power connector cable on page 69 ) To remove the display a ssembly in its entirety: 1. Disconnect th e display panel cab le (1) from t he system board. 2. Release the wireless an tenna cables from the clips (2) built into the b ase enclosure.
4. Remove the display assembly (2) . NOTE: Models may have either one or two antennas installed. If it is necessary to replace any of the disp lay assembly subcom ponents: 1. To remove the display bezel: a. Remove the two Mylar screw covers (1) and the two Phillips PM2.
c. Remove the display bezel (6) . 2. To remove the web cam/microphone module: a. Position the display assembly with the top edge toward you. b. Remove the two broadhead Philli ps PM2.5×2.5 screws (1) that secure the display panel to the enclosure. c.
d. Disconnect the module cable (3) from the m odule. Component replacement procedures 75.
e. Remove the webcam/microphon e module. (The module is attached to the display enclosure with double- sided tape.) 3. To remove the h inge covers: a. Position the display assembly with the bo ttom edge toward you.
b. Remove the two Phillip s PM2.5×4. 0 screws (1) that secure the top hinge covers to the display enclosur e, and then remove the top hinge cove rs (2) . c. Remove the two Phillip s PM2.0×3. 0 screws (1) that secure the side hinge covers to the display enclosu re, and then remove the side hinge covers (2) .
b. Remove the four Phi llips PM2.5×4.0 screws (1) that secure the display pa nel to the enclosure, and then remo ve the display panel (2) from the enclosure. c. On the back of the display panel, release the adhesive strip (1) that secures the display panel cable to th e display panel, and then disconnect (2) and remove (3) the cable.
e. Remove the display hinge s (2) . 5. To remove the wireless ante nna cables and t ransceivers: a. Position the display assembly with the bo ttom edge toward you. b. Release the wireless antenna transceivers (1) from the display enclosure. (The wireless antenna transceivers are atta ched to th e display enclosure with d ouble-sided ta pe.

3. Tilt the system board up to the left slightly (2) , and then remove the system board (3) . NOTE: A thermal pad services a co mponent on the bottom of the system board. Replacement thermal material is includ ed with all system board spare part kits.
Optical drive cable Description Spare part number Optical drive cable (includes cable bracket) 685084-001 Before removing the optical drive cable, fo llow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibern ation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Release the optical driv e cable from the clips (4) built into the b a se enclosure. Reverse this procedure to in stall the optica l drive cable. 86 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
Fan/heat sink assembly NOTE: The fan/heat sink assembly spare part ki t includes repl acement thermal materials. Description Spare part number Fan/heat sink assembly for use only with com puter models.
To remove the fan/ heat sink assembly: 1. Disconnec t the fan cable (1) from the system board. 2. Loosen the screws on the heat sink (2) that secure the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board. NOTE: The number of screws used to secu re the fa n/heat sink assembly to the system board varies by computer model.
NOTE: The following illustration sh ows the fan/heat sink assembly removal process on a computer model equipped with a n Intel processor and a graphics subsystem with UMA memory.
The thermal materia l must be thoroughly cleaned fr om the surfaces of the heat sink and the system board components ea ch time the heat si nk is re moved. Replacement thermal material s are included with the fan/heat sink assembly, proce ssor, and system board spar e part kits.

3. Disconnect th e power from the c omputer by firs t unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er.
2. Lift the processor (3) straight up, and then r emove it. NOTE: The gold tria ngle (4) on the processor must be alig ned with the tria ngle icon embossed on the processo r socket when you install the process or. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the processor.
5 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an unsuccessful installation, downlo ad and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reliable external power u sing the AC adapter.
Using System Diagnostics System Diag nostics allows you to run dia gnostic te sts to de termine if t he computer hardwa re is functioning properly. To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press esc , and then press f2 .

7 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes t ools provided by HP and the operating system to help you safeguard your information and re trieve it if you ever need to . These tools will help you return your compu ter to a proper working state or even back to the original factory state , all with simple steps.
Creating recovery media and backups Recovery after a system failure is only as good as your most recent backup. 1. After you successfully set up the computer, crea te HP Recovery media. This step creates a backup of the HP R ecovery partition on the computer.
software programs installe d at the factory, and th en configures the sett ings for the progra ms. HP Recovery media can also be used to customize the system or aid in the replacement of a hard drive. ● Only one set of HP Recove ry media can be crea ted.
Restore and recovery There are several options for re covering your system. Choose the method that best matches your situation and leve l of expertise: ● If you need to restore your p e rsonal files and data, you can use Windows File History to restore your information from the backups you created.
Using Windows Refresh fo r quick and easy recovery When your computer is not work ing properly and you need to regain system stability, the Windows Refresh option allo ws you to start fres h and keep what is importan t to you. IMPORTANT: Refresh re moves any traditional applications that were not origina lly installed on the system at the factory.
3. Click Change PC setting s in the bottom-right corne r of the scre en, and then select General from the PC settings screen. 4. Under Remove everythi ng and reinstall Windows , select Get started , and follow the on- screen instructions.
