2 Getting to know your computer Finding your ha rdware a nd so ftware i nformat ion ▲ Select Star t > Computer . A lis t displa ys all the devic es inst alled in your computer, includin g opti cal dri ves, solid -state dr ives (SSD), or a secondary har d drive.
Right side Component Description (1) Optical drive Reads and write s (select models o nly) to an optical disc. (2) Optical drive light ● Green: The optical drive is b eing accessed. ● Off: The optical drive is idle. (3) Optical drive eject b utton Releases the disc tray.

Setting up a WLAN To set up a WLAN and co nnect to the Intern et, you need the follow ing equip ment: ● A broadb and mo dem (ei ther DSL or cabl e) (1) and high-speed Inte rnet serv ice purchase d f.
Connecting to a W LAN To connect t o the WLA N, follow these steps : 1. Be sure that the WL AN dev ice is on . If the device is on, t he wirel ess lig ht is on. If the wir eless light is off, pres s the wi reless button. NOTE: On some mod els, the wirele ss light is amber when all wirele ss device s are off.
Connec ting to a loca l ar ea netw ork (LAN) Use a L AN conne ction if you wa nt to con nect the c omputer directl y to a route r in y our home (instead of wo rking w irelessly ), or i f you want to c onnect to an ex isting n etwork at your of fice. Conne cting to a LAN requi res an 8-pin , RJ-45 networ k cable.
4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP computer as an ent ertainmen t hub to socialize vi a the webcam , enjoy and manage your music, and down load and watch mov ies.
Component Description (3) HP TrueVision HD Webcam Records video, captures still photographs, allows you to video conference and chat online using streaming video. To use the webcam, select Star t > All Programs > Communication and Chat > CyberLink YouCam .
Using the webcam Your com puter has an i ntegrated we bcam, a powerfu l social n etworking to ol tha t allows you t o commun icate up close w ith frien ds and c olleagues n ext do or or on t he othe r side of the world.
Enabling and Disabling Beat s Audio ▲ To enabl e or disab le Beats Audio, p ress the fn key in co mbin ati on with the b key. The follo wing tabl e explains the meaning of the Beats Audio icons that appear on the scre en when you pr ess the Beats A udio hot k ey ( fn + b ).
Connecting a VGA moni tor or p rojector To se e the computer screen image on an exter nal VG A monito r or pr ojected for a pr esentat ion, connec t a monit or or projector to the c omputer's VGA po rt. To conne ct a monitor or proje ctor: 1. Connect the VGA cabl e from the mon itor or project or to the VGA port on the computer as shown .
To conne ct a high-d efinition T V or monitor to you r comput er: 1. Connect on e end of the HDMI ca ble to the HDMI port on th e computer. 2. Connect th e other e nd of the cable to the hi gh-defini tion TV or monitor .
To re turn the audio str eam t o the com puter speakers, follo w these s teps: 1. Right -clic k the Speake rs icon in the notifi cation area , at the far right of the taskb ar, and then click Pl ayback device s . 2. On the Play back ta b, click Speaker s .
5 Using the keyboard and pointing devices Your com puter allow s easy on-sc reen navi gation with a keyb oard, pointi ng device, and on select models , an integ rated num eric k eypad. S elect mod els als o have a ction ke ys or hot key sho rtcuts t hat enable you to do comm on tasks.
Using AL T GR key combina tions Some c ountries have k eyboards w ith an AL T GR k ey that i s used for specia l key c ombinatio ns. To type th e rupee s ymbol o n a keyboar d that include s this key , use the alt gr + 4 key combinat ion. Regi on-specifi c keyboa rds in India ca n use the ct rl + shift + 4 keys for the rupee symbol.
Using the acti on keys An action key perform s an assigned function. The icon on eac h of the f1 through f12 keys illu strate s the assig ned function for that key. To use an action ke y function, pr ess and hold the key . The ac tion key f eature is enab led at the factory .
Icon Key Description f11 Mutes or restores speaker sound. f12 Turns the wireless feature on or off. NOT E: A wireless network must be set up before a wireless connection is possible.
Using the hot ke ys A hot ke y is a combi nation of the fn key and either the esc key or the b key. To use a hot key: ▲ Briefly press the fn k ey, an d then br iefly pr ess the seco nd key o f the com binati on. Function Hot key Description Display system information.
Using the k eypad Using the integrated numeric keypad The c omputer includes an integ rated num eric keyp ad, an d it also suppor ts an optional external nume ric keypa d or an option al external keyboard that include s a numeri c keypa d. Component Description num lock key Controls the function of the integrated numeric keypad.
Using the Touc hPad Component D escripti on (1) TouchPad on/off button Turns the TouchP ad on or off. (2) TouchPad light ● On: The TouchPad is off. ● Off: The TouchPad is on. (3) TouchPad zone Moves the on-screen pointe r and selects or activates items on the screen.
Navigating To mo ve the on -scree n poin ter, slide one fi nger acros s the T ouchPad in the di rection you w ant the pointer to go. Selecting Use the left and ri ght TouchPad butt ons as you would use t he correspon ding buttons on an exter nal mouse .
Using Touch Pad gestures The Tou chPad su pports a variety of gest ures tha t let y our fing ers swi pe, pinc h, and ro tate to manipul ate it ems on th e desktop. T o use To uchPad g esture s, plac e two finge rs on th e Touch Pad at the sa me ti me.
Scrolling Scrolli ng is us eful for moving up, dow n, or si deways o n a pa ge or im age. To scroll, p lace two fingers slight ly apart on the T ouchPad, and then drag them across the Touc hPad in an up, dow n, left, or right motio n. NOT E: Scrollin g speed i s co ntrolled by finge r speed.
Rota ti ng Rotating allow s you to r otate items such as photos. To rotate , anch or your l eft forefinger in the TouchPad zone. M ove th e right f orefinger a round the ancho red fing er in a sweeping motion, m oving from 12 o ’clock to 3 o ’clock.
6 Managing power Your c omputer can o perate on either battery p ower or external power. When the compu ter is o nly runnin g on batter y power and an AC power source is not a vailable to char ge the ba ttery, it is import ant to monito r and conser ve the battery ch arge.
Initiating an d exiting Sleep The s ystem is set at the factor y to in itiate Sl eep aft er a spe cific p eriod of inactivi ty, depen ding o n wheth er the comp uter is running on batter y power or on externa l power. Power se ttings and timeouts can be ch anged using Po wer Options in Wi ndows Cont rol Panel.
4. Click R equire a password (recommended) . NOTE: If you n eed to create a user a ccount pass word or change your cu rren t user acc ount passw ord, clic k Create or change yo ur user account pass word , and then fo llow the on- screen ins tructio ns.
Runni ng on battery pow er When a charged battery is in the comput er and th e compute r is not p lugged in to extern al pow er, the compute r runs on batter y power and the d isplay brightnes s decr eases to c onserve battery life. The battery in the c omputer slowly dis charges w hen the computer i s off and unplu gged from external powe r.
Finding battery info rmation Help and Supp ort provid es the fo llowin g tools a nd infor mation ab out the battery: ● Battery Che ck tool in Help and Sup port to test batter y performanc e ● Info.

HP CoolSens e HP C oolSense auto maticall y detect s when the compute r is no t in a st ationar y posi tion and adjusts perfor mance an d fan sett ings to k eep the s urface temperature of your computer at th e optimum level of c omfort.
If the compute r is unres ponsiv e and you are una ble to use the precedin g shut down proced ures, try the foll owing emerg ency procedu res in the se quence provided: ● Press ctr l + alt + delete , and then c lick the Shut down icon on the display.
7 Managing and sharing informatio n Drive s are di gital st orage devices o r solid -state dr ives th at help y ou store , mana ge, shar e, and access inform ation. Yo ur comp uter has an internal hard drive tha t stores your com puter's s oftware, operati ng syst em, as well as provid ing stor age for all of your pers onal files.
Connecting a U SB device CAUTION: To red uce th e risk of damage to a USB c onnector , use mi nimal for ce to conn ect the device . ▲ Connect the USB cable for th e device to the USB port. NOTE: The USB port o n your compu ter may loo k slightly different f rom the i llustratio n in this sect ion.
To di sconnect an unpowe red exte rnal device, sto p the device, and then d isconnect it fro m the compute r. To dis connect a p owered ex ternal d evice, turn off th e device , disconnec t it f rom the compute r, and th en unplug the AC p ower cord.
NOT E: If the card is not ejected, pull the car d out of the slot. Using optica l drives An optica l disc drive uses las er light to read or store lar ge amount s of informati on. Some drives ca n only r ead infor mation, but others can al so write (burn) i nformatio n onto a blank disc.
● For copy protection purpo ses, Adv anced Acces s Content Syst em (AAC S) keys are integrated into th e compute r. AACS keys req uire oc casional renewal to suppo rt play back of n ew BD movie releases . The C yberLink PowerD VD progr am will request an up date to co ntinue playbac k when such a B D mov ie rele ase is inserted in the d rive.
2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by gently pressing down on the sp indle while lifting the outer edges of the disc . Hold the disc by the edg es and avoid touc hing the flat surfaces. NOTE: If the tray is not full y access ible, til t the dis c carefully as you remove it.
8 Maintaining your computer It is i mportant to perfor m regul ar main tenance to keep yo ur computer in opti mal con dition. T his chapter provi des informa tion a bout im proving the perf ormance of yo ur compu ter by runni ng tools such a s Disk Def ragmenter and Dis k Cleanu p and by replacing a hard drive or adding memory .
● Do not type on the k eyboard or move the compute r while an optica l drive is wri ting to a disc. T he write process is sensiti ve to vibratio n. ● Before y ou move a com puter tha t is con nected to an exter nal har d drive, in itiate Sleep an d allow the screen to cl ear, or properl y disconne ct the externa l hard drive.
5. Lift th e hard dr ive (3 ) out of the hard driv e bay. To in stall a h ard dri ve, rev erse this procedure. Using HP 3D DriveGuard (selec t models only) HP 3D D riveGu ard protect s a h ard drive by parkin g the d rive and h alting data req uests un der either of the follow ing conditi ons: ● You drop the com puter.
NOT E: It is no t necess ary to run Disk Defragm enter on solid-s tate d rives. After you start Di sk Defr agment er, it wo rks wit hout super vision. Ho wever, d ependi ng on the size of your hard drive and the number of fragm ented fil es, Disk Defragm enter may take m ore th an an hour to com plete.
CAUTION: To prevent i nformati on loss or an un resp onsive sy stem: Shut do wn the comput er before a dding or replac ing memo ry modu les. D o not rem ove a m emory module while the computer is on, in the S leep sta te, or in Hibernat ion.
8. Insert a new m emory m odule: CAUTION: To prevent dam age to the memory module, hold the mem ory module by the edge s only. Do not touch the co mponents on the memory modul e. a. Align th e notched edge (1) of the memo ry module w ith the ta b in the m emory module slot.
Updating programs and d river s HP rec ommends that you update your prog rams an d drive rs on a regular basis to the lat est v ersions . Updat es can res olve is sues and b ring new featur es and o ptions to your comp uter.

Using antivirus software Comp uter viruses can disab le program s, utilities , or the operatin g system, or caus e them to function abno rmally. Antivir us softw are can detect most vi ruse s, destr oy them, and in most c ases, repair any damage they hav e caused .
If you have ins talled third-p arty so ftware afte r yo u purchase d you r comput er, regu larly upda te the softwar e. Software com panies provi de software upd ates to their produc ts to correct sec urity problem s and impro ve function ality of the so ftware.
10 Using Setup Utilit y (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup U tility, or Basic Input/Ou tput Sys tem (BIOS) , contr ols com munication between all the i nput a nd outpu t devices on the sy stem (suc h as disk driv es, displa y, keyboar d, mouse, and printer) .
BIOS version infor matio n (also known as RO M date and Sy stem BI OS ) can be displayed by pr essing fn + esc (if you are alr eady in Windows) or by using S etup U tility (BIO S). 1. Start Se tup Utilit y (BI OS). 2. Use t he arro w keys t o sele ct Main .
NOT E: After a message on the s creen repo rts a s uccessful installa tion, y ou can delete the downloa ded file fro m your hard drive. Using Sys tem Diagnostic s System Diagnos tics allow s you to run dia gnostic tests to determine if the c omputer hardware is functio ning p roperly.
11 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your c omputer incl udes tool s provi ded by t he oper ating system an d HP t o help yo u saf eguard y our inform ation a nd retri eve it if eve r needed. Creatin g backups 1. Use HP R ecove ry Mana ger to c reate re covery media i mmedia tely after you s et up t he working comp uter.
● Store the rec overy medi a in a s afe locatio n, separate from the computer. ● If necess ary, y ou can exit the progra m before you h ave fini shed cr eating the recove ry m edia. The next time yo u open HP Recovery Manager, you wil l be prompted to con tinue the proc ess.
Backing up system and perso nal information Your co mputer stores informat ion tha t is imp ortant to you, such as files, e mails, a nd pho tos, and y ou will wa nt to k eep that inform ation ev en if you download a vi rus or the sys tem stops workin g pro perly.
Creating a backup using Windows Backup and Restore Window s allows you to bac k up files using Win dows Backup and Res tore. Yo u can select the lev el you wan t to ba ck up, f rom indi vidual f olders to drive s. The backups are compr essed to save s pace.
Restore a nd reco very Restoring to a previous system restore point Sometim es inst allin g a softwa re program causes your com puter or Win dows to b ehave unp redictab ly.
● If the recovery media do no t work, you can obtain recovery discs for y our system f rom the HP website. ● The Min imized I mage R ecove ry o ption is reco mmended f or adv anced u sers on ly. All hardw are- related dri vers and sof tware are re-in stalled, but othe r software app licat ions are not.
