Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transporti ng equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Service label When ordering pa rts or requestin g information, provide the comput er serial numbe r and model number provided on the service la bel. Optical drive NOTE: The optical drive spare part ki t includes a bezel an d bracket. 3. Pull the optical drive (3) out from the front until the optical drive is co mp letely removed from the computer. 4. Remove the two Phillip s M2.0 x 3.0 screws (1) that secure the optica l drive bracket t o the optical drive and then remo ve the bracket (2) from th e optical drive.
5. Insert a straightene d paper clip (1) into the release access op ening in the bezel. 6. Press the rel ease tab (2) and remove the bezel from the t ab side (3) . 7. Remove the bezel (4) from the optical drive. Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the optical drive.
Hard dr ive NOTE: If your replacement hard drive was shipped with out an operat ing system installed, you will need to install it using the system recovery di scs.
2. Lift the hard drive (2) to remove. 3. Disconnec t the hard drive cable (1) . Remove the front bumper (2) and back bumper (3) . 4. Remove the four Philli ps M3.0×3 .5 screws (4) , and then remove the bracket (5) from the hard drive. Replacing a hard drive To install a hard drive, reverse the remo val procedure.
After the setup has been co mpleted, reinstall any ap plications and restore a ny data that you backed up. If you need furthe r assistance, call 1-800-474 -6836 (1 800-HP Invent).
To add or replace a memory module: 1. Spread the retention clips (1) on each side of the memory module slot to rele ase the memory module. (The memory mo dule tilts up.) 2. Remove the memory module (2) by pulling it away from the slot a t an angle. CAUTION: T o prevent damage to the memory module, ho ld the memory module by the edges only.
5. Gently press the memory module (3) down, applyi ng pressure to both the left and right edge s of the module, until the retentio n clips snap into p lace.

3. Remove the WLAN modu le by pulling the module awa y from the slot at an a ngle (3) . NOTE: The WLAN module is designe d with a notc h to prevent incorrec t installation into the WLAN module socke t. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the WLAN module.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the Phillips M2.5×6.5 screw that secu res the keyboard to the computer. 2. Turn the compute r right-side up wi th the front toward you an d open the display.
6. Lift the rear ed ge (1) of the keyboa rd , and then mov e the keyboard (2) toward the display panel. 7. Tilt the keyboard forward (1) onto the palm rest. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connec tor (2) to which the keybo ard cable is attached, and then disconnect th e keyboard cable (3) from the system board.
Top cover NOTE: The top cover spare pa rt kit includes the TouchPa d. Description Spare part number Ruby Red 680574-001 Sparkling Black 680576-001 Winter Blue 680575-001 Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1.
Remove th e top cov er: 1. Disconnect these cables from the system board: (1) Power button board Z IF cable (2) Speaker ca ble (3) TouchPad button board ZIF cable 2. Remove the following scre ws under the ke yboard: (1) Three Phillips M2.5 x 3.0 (2) Three Phillips M2.
5. Remove the following scre ws that se cure the top cover to the computer: (1) Two Phillips M2.5 x 7.5 (2) Five Phillips M2.5 x 6.5 6. Turn the computer right-side up, with the front toward you. 7. Open the computer. 8. Lift the front edge of the top cover (1) until the le ft and right sides di sengage from the base en closure.

TouchPad button board Description Spare part number TouchPad button board (includes cable) 680559-001 Before removing the Touch Pad butt on board, follow these ste ps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibern ation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
5. Lift the TouchPad button board (4) slightly to perform the next step. 6. Carefully invert the TouchP ad button board (1) . 7. Release the ZIF conne ctor to which th e TouchP ad LED board cable is connected, and then disconnect the TouchPad L ED board cable (2) from the TouchPad button board.
Before removing the TouchPad LED bo ard, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibern ation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer.
Display assembly NOTE: The display assembly spare part kit includes webcam, two microphon es, and wireless antenna transceivers a nd cables. Description Spare part number 35.
2. Release the wireless an tenna cables (2) from th e clips and the opening in the base enclosure. NOTE: It may be nece ssary to release th e USB board ZIF cable to remove the wireless antenna cables. CAUTION: Su pport the displa y assembly when removin g the following screws.
5. If it is necessary to replace the display beze l or any of the display assembly subcomponents: a. Remove the plastic screw covers (1) and the two Phill ips M2.
b. Disconnect the webc am/microphone cable (2) from the webcam/microphone modu le. c. Remove the webcam/microphone module. The webcam/microp hone module is available using spare part number 680577-001. 7. If it is necessary to replace the hinge covers, to remove the display ca ble, or to r emove th e antenna cables: a.
8. If it is necessary to replace the display panel: a. Remove the four bottom Phillips M2.5 × 3.5 screws and the two top Phillips M2.5 × 2.5 screws that secure the display pane l to the display enclos ure. b. Lift the top edge o f the display enclosure, (1) and then swing it up and forward until it is perpendicular to the display panel.
c. Release the adhesive stri p (2) that secures the display panel cable to the display panel, and then disconnect the disp lay panel cable (3) from the display pan el. d. Remove the display pane l. The display pan el cable is av ailable using spare p art number 680547-001.
b. Remove the display hinge s (2) . The display hin ges include the display hinges and brackets and are availa ble using spare p art number 680554 -001. 10. If it is necessary to replace the di splay panel cable: a. Release the tabs (1) built into the display enclosure sh ie lding that secure the displ ay panel cable to the displa y enclosure.
11. If it is necessary to replace the wi reless antenna cable s and transceivers: a. Release the wireless antenna cabl es from the clips (1) built into the display enclosure. b. Release the wireless antenna transceivers (2) from the display enclosure.
Remove the optical dr ive cable: 1. Disconnec t the optical drive ca ble (1) from the system board . 2. Release the optic a l drive cable (2) from the clips built into the base enclosure. 3. Release the optical drive c onnector from the ba se enclosure by pryi ng the clips (3) that secure the optical drive conne ctor to the base enclosure.
USB board Description Spare part number USB boar d (includes cable) 680558-001 Before removing the USB board, follow these ste ps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibern ation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
Power connector cable Description Spare part number Power connector cable 680548-001 Before removing the power connecto r cable, follow th ese steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. System board NOTE: The system board thermal p ad kit, part number 680 571-001, includes replacemen t thermal material. Description Spare part number For use only with computer models equipped with UMA.
Remove the system bo ard: 1. Disconnect the following cables from the system board: (1) Display panel cabl e (2) optical drive cable (3) USB board cable (4) Power connecto r cable 2. Remove the Phillips M2 .5 × 4.5 screw (1) that secure s the system board to th e base enclosure.
RTC battery Description Spare part number RTC battery (includes ca ble and doub le-side d tape) 637193-001 Before r emoving th e RTC bat tery, foll ow these s teps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. 4. Remove the fan and heat sink (4) . NOTE: The thermal mate rial must be thoroughly clean ed from the surfaces of the heat sink and the system board co mponents each ti me the heat sink is remove d. Replacement thermal material is included with the base enc losure, heat sink, pr ocessor, and system board spare part ki ts.
3. Disengage the two clips that secure the fan to th e heat sink and remove the heat sink (2) from the fan. Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the fan and heat si nk.
PCH heat sink Description Spare part number PCH heat sink 683843-001 Before removing the PCH heat sink, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibern ation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
2. Remove the PCH heat sink by lifting straight up (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhe sive quality of the th ermal material located b etween the heat sink a nd system board components, it may be necessary to move the heat sink fr om side to sid e to detach it.
4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 31 ). 5. Remove the service door (see Service door on page 32 ). 6. Remove the optical drive (see Optical driv e on page 33 ). 7. Remove the ha rd drive (see Hard driv e on page 36 ). 8. Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard on page 43 ).
5 Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Using Setup Utility Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Navigating and selectin g in Setup Utility To navigate and select in Setu p Util ity, follow these steps: 1. Turn on or restart the compu ter, and then press esc while the “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” message is displayed at the bottom of th e screen.
Restoring factory settings in Setup Utility NOTE: Restoring defaults will not change the hard drive mode. To return all settings in Setup Ut ility to the values that were set at the fact ory, follow these steps: 1.
Determining the BIOS version To determine whether available BIO S updates c ontai n later BIOS versions tha n those currently installed on the computer, you need to know the version of the system BIOS currently installed.
4. Double-click the file that has an .e xe extension (for example, filename.exe ). The BIOS instal lation begins. 5. Complete the installation by foll owi ng the on-screen instructions. NOTE: After a message on the screen rep orts a successful installati on , you can delete the downloaded file f rom your hard drive.

7 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and re trieve it if ever needed. Creating backups 1. Use HP Recovery Manage r to create re covery media immediately after you set up the working computer.
Creating the r ecovery media 1. Select Start and type recovery in the sear ch field. Select Re covery Ma nager from the list. Allow the action to continue, if prom pted. 2. Click Recovery Media Creation . 3. Follow the on-screen instru ctions to continue.
Tips for a successful backup ● Number backup discs befo re inserting them into the optical drive. ● Store person al files in the Documen ts, Music, Pictures, and Videos libraries, and ba ck up these folders periodically. ● Save customized sett ings in a w indow, toolbar, or menu bar by taking a screen shot of yo ur settings.
To restore, see Restoring specific file s using Window s Backup and Restore on page 86 . Restore and recovery Restoring to a previou s system restore point Sometimes installing a softw are program causes your computer or Windows to behave unpredictably.
● If the recovery media do not work, you can obta in recovery discs for your system from the H P website. ● The Minimized Image Reco very option is recommende d for advanced use rs only. All hardware- related drivers an d software are re- installed, bu t other software applications are not.
To change the boot o rder for a recovery flash drive: 1. Insert the flash drive into a USB port. 2. Restart the computer. 3. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 fo r boot options. 4. Select the flash drive from th e boot options window.
