1 Welcome Thank you for purchasing an HP Photosmart A510 series printer! Th is printer makes home photo printing simple, convenie nt, and fun, and it produces high-qualit y color prints you will be pleased t o share with family and frie nds. ● Printer Help Menu : The Help menu on the printer lets yo u read helpful printing tips and information about basic printer features ri ght on the printer screen.
Rear of printer 1 USB por t : Use this port to conne ct the printer to a computer or to an HP direct-printin g digital camera using a USB cable. 2 Power cord connection : Connect the power cord here. Inside front of printer 1 Input tray : Load paper here.
Indicator lights 1 On light : This light is solid green when the printer is on . It flashes green when the printer is busy, and flashes red when the printer requires attent ion. 2 Memory card light : This light turns solid green after the memory card is correctly inserted.
Note You can also d elete photos from t he control panel. Press a nd hold the Photo Fix button, and then p ress the Cancel button. To use the printer menu 1. If there is a memory card in the print er, remove it. 2. Press (1) or (2) on the printer con trol panel to open the printer me nu. – Press or to scroll through the menu opt ions displayed on the printer screen . Menu items that are not accessible are grayed out.

3 Paper basics Choose and load paper Learn how to choose t he right paper for your print job and how to load it into the in put tray for printing. Choose the right pape r Use HP Advanced Photo Pap er. It is especially designed to w ork with the inks in your printer to create beaut iful photos.

Navigate through an d view your photos This section explains how to navigate through and view you r photos on the printer screen . To view ph otos one by one 1. Insert a memory card. 2. Press or to select a layout, and then press OK . See Choose a photo layout .
Choose a photo layout The printer prompts you to select a layout each ti me you insert a m emory card. To choose a photo layout 1. Insert a memory card. 2. Use or to select a layout: – Print one photo per sheet – Print two photo s per sheet – Print four photos per sheet 3.
To print a p hoto index 1. Insert a memory card. 2. Select Print Index Page when the Select Layout screen appears on th e printer, and then press OK . A photo index shows thum bnail views and index numb ers for up to 2000 photos on a memory card. Use index cards or pl ain paper instead of photo paper to cut costs when printing phot o index pages.

Select any photo ➔ Select one or more photos on a memo ry card and use the steps below to turn on panoramic mode. Panoramic mode prints the selected p hotos with a 3:1 aspect ratio. To print pan oramic photos 1. If there is a memory card in the print er, remove it.
Print nine frames from a video clip To print nine frames from a v ideo clip 1. Insert a memory card th at contains a video clip. 2. Press OK to select any layout optio n. Video clips are always p rinted nine to a pa ge. 3. Press or to scroll to the video clip you want to print .
HP recommends leaving Photo Fix on, but if yo ur photos do not print correct ly, or if you want to print a photo w ithout using the Photo Fix improvem ents, turn off Photo Fix. To turn off Photo Fix ➔ Press Photo Fix . A message on the printer screen t ells you, Photo Fix has been tur ned Off.
6 Print from other devices This printer ca n connect to and p rint photos stored on severa l device types includin g computers, digi tal cameras, and iPods.

On the HP Photosmart screen, cli ck Start Using the Device . 5. Select the drive for HP Photo smart A510 printer, and then select the location to save photos.

7 Maintain and transport the printer The printer requires very litt le maintenance. Follow the guid elines in this section to exten d the life span of t he printer and printing suppli es, and to ensure that the photos you print are always of th e highest quality.
For best print quality, HP recom mends that you install all reta il print cartridges before the date stamped on the box. To prepare the printer and cartridge 1. Make sure the printer is on. 2. Open the print cartri dge door of the printer. 3. Remove the bright pi nk tape from the cartridge.
Each time you install or rep lace a print cartridge, a messa ge appears on the printer screen asking you to load pa per so the printer can align the cart ridge. This ensures hig h- quality prints. Load photo paper in t he input tray, press OK , and then foll ow the onscreen instruc tions to align the cartridge.
6. Press OK to begin cl eaning the print cartri dge. 7. When the print er finishes cleaning the cartri dge and prints a test page, check the test page and sel ect from the following op tions: – If the test page has white streaks or missi ng colors, the print cartridge needs to be cleaned ag ain.

Remove any memory cards fr om the memory card slots. Caution Do not pull out a memory card while th e memory card light is flashing.
3. Press or to open the print er menu. 4. Select Tools , and th en press OK . 5. Select Align cartridge , and then press OK . 6. A message appears on the printe r screen reminding you to load paper. Lo ad paper so the printer can print an alignment page.
● If the printer and prin t cartridge have not been used for on e month or more, clean the print cartridge befo re printi ng. For more in formation, see Automatically clean the print cartridge .
To transport the printer 1. Turn off the print er. 2. Remove any memory cards fr om the memory card slots. 3. Remove all paper from the in put and output trays, and then close the input and output tray doors. Note Make sure the printe r completes its power-dow n cycle before you unplug the power cord .
8 Troubleshooting The HP Photosmart printer is designed to be reli able and easy to use. This chap ter answers frequen tly asked questions about usi ng the printer and print ing without a computer.
The On light fl ashed amber briefl y after I turned the printer off. Solution This is a normal part of the power-down process. It do es not indicate a problem with the printer. The On light is flashing a mber. Cause A printer error has occurred. Try the following so lutions.
The printer does not find and display the photos on my memory card. Solution The memory card may contain fi le types the printer cannot read directl y from the memory card. – Save the photos to a computer, and then print them from the comput er. For more informatio n, see the camera doc umentation or the electro nic Help.
The optio nal HP Photos mart Intern al Battery is i nstalled in th e printer, bu t it will not charge. Solution ● Turn off and unpl ug the printer. Open the ba ttery compartment cover. R emove the battery and reinstall it. Be careful not to tou ch the contacts on t he inside of the battery compart ment or on the battery.
● If you are using t he printer in an extremely h igh or low humidity environ ment, insert the paper as far as it wil l go into the input tray, and load one sheet of photo paper at a ti me.
● If you canno t grasp the edge of the jammed paper to remove it, try the following: – Turn off the print er. – If the optional HP Phot osmart Internal Battery is not inst alled in the printer, unplug the pr inter power cord. Wait about 10 seconds, and then plug t he power cord back in.
Print quali ty is poor. Solution ● Make sure you ar e using the right type of pho to paper for the proje ct. Use HP- designed photo pape r for best results. For more informatio n, see Choose the right paper . ● Make sure the print qu ality setting is set to B est quality.
Bluetooth printing problems Before contacting H P support, read this section f or troubleshooting tips, or go t o the online support services at www.hp.com/supp ort . Be sure to also read the docume ntation that came wit h your HP Bluetooth w ireless printer adapter (if yo u are using one) and yo ur device with Bluetoot h wireless technology.
Print quali ty is poor. Solution The photo you prin ted may be low resolution. For b etter results, set the digital camera to a hi gher resolution. Photos taken wi th VGA-resolution cameras, such as those found in wireless phones, may not have high e nough resolution to produce a high-quality pri nt.
Error mess age: Automatic paper sensor failed. Solution The automatic pape r sensor is obstructed or damaged. Try moving the printer out of dire ct sunlight, and then press OK and try prin ting again. If this does not work, go to www.hp.com/support or contact HP support.
Note During this condit ion, you can still use the printe r for printing and saving photos from th e xD-Picture Card to a secure loca tion, such as the computer hard dri ve. Solution ● Reinsert th e xD-Picture Car d memory card in to your camera an d turn on the camera.
