Y our printer’ s main featur es The HP Des ignjet 510 print er is desi gned for individ uals or smal l work-g roups in ar chitect ure, engin eering and constr uction (AEC) , and mechanic al CAD desi gn.

HP ink supplies HP ink su pplies f or your pri nter cont ain two compo nent s: print heads and i nk cartridge s. The print er uses t he follo wing HP ink s upplies: • Black in k cartrid ges are HP N o 82 supplie s. • Cyan, magent a and yello w cartr idges ar e HP No 82 supp lies.
Print resolut ion Y our pr inter provide s two di ff erent p rint mo des that change t he prin t resol utions o f each of the prin t quality mode s. These di fferent pr int mode s are opti mized for : Line Dra wings/ T ext or Images.

User interface The pri nter’s front p anel includes an easy- to-use interface with a di splay , giving you ac cess to a comprehen sive set of pr inter functio ns. See Nav igating the menu system f or a shor t tutoria l to teach you how to na vigate t hrough t he menus and f or a descri ption of int ernal print s.
Memo ry The pri nter come s with 160 MB of inte rnal Rand om Access Memory (RA M). Addi tional memory can be added to the HP-GL/2 Accessor y card tha t came with t he printer . Y ou can add 256 MB (p art nu mber CH654A) of memory for la rge-f ile proc essing and impro ved print ing.

What are HP ink suppl ies? For each of the fou r ink colo rs used in t he print er , ther e are two sep arate compon ents , the pri nthead an d the ink car tridge . These comp onent s are call ed the HP ink supplies and are coded with a H ewlett-P ackard sel ection numbe r to help you r eorder th e correct replac ement.

Advance calibrat ion It is imp ortant t hat the p aper lo aded for this cali brati on is exac tly that used for normal prin ting, bo th in quality ( for examp le, gloss y paper ) and in wid th (for examp le, A0 or 3 6 in). Eit her roll or sheet p aper ca n be used.
Advance ca libration val ues The pri nter stor es the adva nce calibrati on valu es of the la st two different types of pape r used for th e cali brat ion. When you pr int, th e printe r tries to match the pape r you hav e selecte d to the sto red valu es.
St epped lines When you look at t he image you ha ve print ed there are ‘stepped lines’ in the bo rders of ar rows an d diago nal lines. The lines should b e stra ight w ith no step ping. The fol lowing is an example of what you mig ht see if yo u have prob lems with st epped lin es.
Incomplete lin es When you look at t he image you ha ve print ed there are: • Mis sing or faint line s. • Print ed ch aracte rs with missin g parts. The fol lowing is an example of what yo u might s ee if you hav e problem s with in complete lines.

Horizont al banding When you look at t he image you ha ve print ed there are ligh t or dark li nes on the image, these are p articular ly highli ghted in hig h density i nk areas. This pro blem is know n as bandin g. IMPOR T ANT Banding can o ccur to a certain de gree in Fa st a nd Normal mode when printing high densit y prints.
Color accurac y These ar e the are as you should revie w when troub leshooting a color accu racy probl em: Paper Ensur e that the paper loaded is g enuin e HP paper and that the correct pa per type is selecte d on the fr ont pa nel and in the driv er .
Color cons istency pro blems • Some p aper may di scolor or ch ange wit h age. Check t hat your p aper is fresh and has been st ored corr ectly . • If the envir onment al condi tions y ou are prin ting in change ra pidly , you may see changes in t he colo r consis tency .

Paper Alwa ys mak e sure that y ou are usin g the approp riat e paper f or your image and that i t is c onsiste nt wi th you r sof t ware applicat ion. T o ensure co lor accuracy an d print-qual ity perfo rmance of the prin ter , use only pa per types that ha ve been ce rtified for yo ur printe r .
Clearing a p aper jam If the front pan el dis play s this messa ge: There is probabl y pape r jamme d in the pr inter . Pa per jams can have variou s causes: • The p aper is too thic k or to o thin for the pri nter , or i s otherwise no t suppor ted.
Removi ng jamme d p aper 1. Open th e window . 2. Swit ch the pri nter of f at the fro nt. 3. If neces sary , careful ly move the pr inthe ad carri age out of the way—if possible all th e way to th e enclo sed area on the lef t or the rig ht. Which way you are able to move it depe nds on wher e the p aper is j ammed.
1 1. Press the Form Feed an d Cut key on th e front pan el to eject any small pi eces of p aper that are st ill in th e pape r path. 12. Reload th e paper as normal (see Loadi ng ro ll p aper or Loading sh eet pa per ). If you are using rol l paper yo u may n eed to trim the e dge first, to ensure that it i s st raight.
Ink marks on the p aper • W arped lines • Blurr ed lines (ink “ bleeds” from li nes) • Marks or scratche s on glossy p aper af ter print ing • Smears or scratc hing on your pri nted p aper.
W a rped lin es • The p aper it self may be warpe d. This ca n happen if it has be en used or no t been store d in the correct enviro nmental con ditions.
Smears o r scratchi ng on your pr inted paper This pr oblem can ap pear on pap er-based coated pap er if a lot of ink is pri nted quic kly . The p aper cannot abs orb the ink qu ickly enough and be comes distorte d.
Paper load ing problems The fr ont pa nel keep s indica ting that pa per is mis aligned or inco rrectly positi oned. Roll paper • The rol l pape r may be load ed the wron g w ay . The pa per shoul d load over the rol l towards you, see Loadin g roll p aper .
Paper out put proble ms Prints fall on the floor after being c ut • Make sure the p aper bi n is open. • Do not l et more th an twenty pr int s accumula te in the bin. • Make sure roll paper is loaded co rrectly . If th e pa per is loa ded incor rectly , the nat ural curl of the p aper may cause it to miss the bi n and fall to the floor .

Error Select Replace Printheads The printer has detected that one or more of the printheads is missing or has an error , as indicated by flashing crosses. The four icons refer from left to right to the Cyan ( • ), Blac k ( • ), Magenta ( • ) and Y ellow ( • ) printheads.
Ink cartridge replacement required The printer has detected that one or more of the ink cartridges is missing or has an error , as indicated by flashing crosses. The four icons refer from left to right to the Cyan ( • ), Blac k ( • ), Magenta ( • ) and Y ellow ( • ) cartridges.
Open window and check printhead cover is properly closed Y ou have replaced one or more printheads and the printer ’s check has found that the printhead cover is not securely closed. Open the window and check the printhead cover . The procedure is described in the Printhead replacement procedure.
Paper advance calibration is recommended. Press ENTER to calibrate Y ou are r ecommended to perform the Advance calibration rou tine, to ensure the optimum print quality . Press the Enter key to create the calibration pattern. See Advance calibration .
Paper not present. Load paper to print calibration pattern The paper axis cal ibration routine has been triggered with out having paper loaded. Load paper; see Adv ance calibration for details of the routine.
Paper too small to print the pattern The paper loaded is not big enough to c ontain the p aper axis calibration pattern. Load a roll or sheet that is at least 65 cm (25 in) long and 50 cm (20 in) wide.
