4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lock size and location du ring removal and repl acement.

3. Pull the Mylar tab on the hard drive (2) toward the side of the computer to disen gage the hard drive from the connector, a nd then lift th e hard drive o ut of the hard drive bay. 4. If it is necessary to re place the hard dr ive cover, lift the Mylar tab to unlock it.
6. Lift the top of the Mylar cover (2) from the drive, and then remove the cover from the h ard drive (3) . Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the h ard drive. Memory modules NOTE: Primary and expansion memory is insta lled in a stacke d configuration in the bo ttom of the computer.
3. Remove the memory module (2) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch to prevent incorrect in sertion into the memory module sl ot.

4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN modules a re designed with a n otch to prevent incorrect in sertion.

6. Lift the top of the keybo ard at an angle (2) , and then pull the keyboard up to remove it from the palm rest (3) . NOTE: Only pull the keyboard up enough to releas e it from the compute r and flip it over o nto the palm rest. Under the ke yboard, the cable is conne cted to the system board.
Top cover NOTE: All top cover spare part kits in clude a touchpad . 5. Disconnect the following cables from the system board: (1) Power button/fu nction board ca ble (2) Audio board cable (3) Fingerprint reader bo ard cable 6.
7. Pry up on the top of the top cover (1) to di sengage it from the computer, and then remove the top cover from the computer (2) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the top cover.

5. Lift the speakers from the compute r (4) . Reverse this procedu re to install the speake r assembly. Latch assembly NOTE: The Latch Kit includes the latch, knob, and spring. Description Spare part num ber Latch Kit 686319-001 Before removing the latch assembly, follow these steps: 1.
NOTE: The latch assembl y includes a small spring . Note the locatio n of the spri ng. Remove the latch assembly: 1. Position the compute r right-side up, with the front to ward you. 2. Detach the spring hook (1) from the tab on the b ase enclosure (2) .
4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 31 ). 5. Remove the following compo nents: a. Bottom door (see Bottom do or on page 33 ). b. Hard driv e (see Hard drive on page 37 ) c. Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 35 ) d. Keyboard (see Keyboard on page 45 ) e.
4. Lift the right side of the system board up at an angle (2) , and then lift the system board up and to the right to remove it (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the system board. Heat sink NOTE: The fan an d heat sink are comb ined into on e assembly.

8. Lift the heat sink off the system board (3) . NOTE: For discrete models, thorough ly clean thermal material from the surfaces of the system board components (1)(3) and the heat sink (2)(4) each time you remove the hea t sink. All heat sink and processor spare part kits include th ermal material.
Reverse this procedure to insta ll the heat sink. NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer.

3. Lift the processor (2) straight up and remove it. NOTE: The gold tria ngle (3) on the processor must be aligne d with the triang le embossed on the processo r slot when you in stall the proc essor.
Display assembly All display assemblies include WLAN antenna transceivers and cables. WWAN models include 2 WWAN antenna transceivers and cables. Description Spare part number Display assembly, 33.8-cm (13.3-inch) HD, anti-glare 684251-001 Before removing the display assembly, follo w these steps: 1.
3. Pull the antennas through the hole th at leads to the top of th e computer (2) . 4. Open the compute r as far as possible. 5. Disconnect th e display cable (1) from the system board and make sure the antenna cable s are all pulled throug h the hole (2) that routes to the bottom of the computer.
7. Lift the display assembly straigh t up and remove it (2) . CAUTION: When i nstalling the display a ssembly, be sure that the wi reless antenna cables are routed and a rranged pr operly. Failure to properly route the ant enna s can result in degradatio n of the computer's WLAN and WWAN perf ormance.
8. If you need to remove the hinge covers from the d isplay hinges, pull th e hinges straight up and off the di splay to r emove the m. Display hinge covers ar e available in the Displa y Hinge Kit using spare part number 684239-001. 9. To replace the disp lay bezel, remove the two screw covers (1) and the two Phillips PM2.
10. Flex the top (1) of the bezel, the inside edges of the left and right side s (2) , and then the bot tom (3) of the bezel until it disengages from the displa y enclosure. 11. Remove the display beze l (4) . The bezel is avail able using sp are part number 68 3858-001.
12. If it is necessar y to replace the we bcam module from th e display enclosure , disconnect the cable from the module (1) , and then gently pull the mo dule away from th e double-sided tape on the display enclosure (2) . The webcam module is a vailable using spar e part number 6835 08-001.
15. Disconnec t the display pa nel cable by rotat ing the display enclosure (1) , lifting the tape (2) that covers the connector, and disconn ecting the cable from the panel (3) . 16. Remove the two Phillips PM1.6×1.5 screws (1) that secure each display hing e to the displ ay panel.
17. Remove the display hin ges (2) . Display hinges are avai lable in the Display Hing e Kit using spa re part number 6842 39-001. Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the d isplay assembly.
Power connector Description Spare part num ber Power connector cable (includes bracket and screws) 683859-001 Before removing the power cable, follow th ese steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Remove the power ca ble assembly from the comp uter (3) . NOTE: Note the locatio n of the cable ro uting channel for reassembly. Reverse this procedure to in stall the power connector cable.
5 Computer Setup (BIOS) and Advanced System Diagnostics Using Computer Setup Computer Setup, or Basic Input/Ou tput System (BIOS), controls communication betwe en all the inpu t and output devices on the system (such as disk drive s, display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
To exit Computer Setup menu s, choose one of the following method s: ● To exit Computer Setup menus without saving your chan ges: Click the Exit icon in the lower-left corn er of the screen, and then follow the o n-screen instructions.
Updating the BIOS The next sections describ e different ways of updating the BIOS. Downloading SoftPaqs to update the BIOS Most BIOS update s on the HP website are packaged in compre ssed files called SoftPaqs . To install BIOS updates from the HP website, follow the steps b elow: 1.
5. Locate the .sig file in the ROM.cab file and rename it with the same prefix as the .b in file (for example, 68CDD.sig). Copy th e renamed file to the Hewlett-PackardBIOS New folder in either the HP_Tools partition of the hard drive, or the USB flash drive.
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an u nsuccessful installation, downlo ad and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external power u sing the AC adapter.
Main menu Select To do this System information ● View and change the system time and date. ● View identification information about your computer. ● View specification information about the pro cessor, memory size, and system BIOS. Security menu Select To do this Administrator password Control access to Setup Utility.
You can view system information and error logs in the Advanced System Diagnostics window. To start Advanced System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the compu ter. While the “Press the ESC ke y for Startup Me nu” message is displayed in the lo wer-left corner of the screen , press esc .

Creating recovery media with HP Recovery Disc Creator HP Recovery Disc Creator is a software program th at offers an alternative way to create recover y media. After you successfull y set up the co mputer, you ca n create recovery media using HP Recovery Disc Creator.
Backing up your information Recovery after a system failure is as good as your most recent backup. Immediately after software setup, you should create system repair discs (select models only ) using HP Recovery Disc Creator and the insta lled optical drive (selec t models only) or an optional e xternal optic al drive to ba ck up your system.
Performing a system recovery In case of system failure or inst ability, the computer provides the following tools to recover your files: ● Windows recovery to ols: You can use Wi ndows Backup and Re store to reco ver information you have previously backed up .
Using f11 recovery tools CAUTION: Using f11 recovery tools completely era ses hard drive contents and reformats the hard drive. All files you ha ve created and an y softwa re installed on the computer are permane ntly removed. The f11 recovery tool reinstalls the operatin g system and HP programs and drivers that were installed at the fa ctory.
After the repair is completed: 1. Eject the Windows 7 ope rating system DVD, and then insert the Driver Recovery disc. 2. Install the Hardwa re Enabling Drivers first, and then install Recommended Ap plications.
8 Power cord set requirements The wide-range input fe ature of the computer perm its it to operate from any line voltage from 100 to 120 volts ac, or from 220 to 240 volts ac. The 3-conductor powe r cord set included wi th t he computer meets the requirem ents for use in the country or region where the e quipment is purchased .

9 Recycling Battery When a non-rechargeable or rechargeable ba ttery has reached the en d of its useful life, do not dispose of the batte ry in general house hold waste.

18. Remove the backlight from the backlight frame. 19. Disconnec t the display pa nel cable (1) from the LCD panel. 20. Remove the screws (2) that secure the LCD panel to the display re ar panel. 21. Release the LCD panel (3) from the d isplay rear panel.
