Compone nts Description HP install er Installs the HP LaserJet all-in-one software based on the hardware it detects from the host computer. Uninstaller Removes files and folders that were installed when the HP LaserJet all-in-one software was originally installed on the computer.

HP Extended Capabilities When you install your HP Color Laser Jet 2820/2830/2840, you have the option of participat ing in HP's voluntary program for communication between your system and HP. Th is feature, av ailable through software that is included on your printing-system software C D, helps HP monitor toner usage.
HP Director Use the HP Director to gain a c cess to the produc t-specific software, default settings, status, and onscreen He lp. By using the HP Dire ctor, you can scan various typ es of originals (p.

Settings When you click Settings , the options that are available depe nd on the capabilities and configuration of your HP Color LaserJe t 2820/2830/2840 all -in-one. Th e following table lists various op tions and settings that might be accessible from the Settings menu.
Setting Detail s Auto Prompt Settings Click this setting to cause the HP Director to appear automatically when you load a document into the automatic document feeder (ADF). This option ap pears only if your HP device has an ADF and supports this function.
Send a Fax When you click Send a Fax , the HP LaserJe t Send a Fax software opens. For more information ab out sending faxes, see HP Send Fax software . NOTE This feature is not avai lable for the HP Co lor LaserJet 2820 product. HP Image Zone When you click HP Image Zone , the HP Image Zone scre en appears.
Four tabs are avail able on the Image Zone UI: ■ My Images . You can navigate to any imag es in your system from the Folders Menu at the left of the screen. ■ Edit . Select an image and click the Edit tab to open and make changes to the image. ■ Projects .

Software Update If you have Internet access, you can click the Software Update icon to open the Welcom e to HP Software Update dialog box, which is shown in the following illustration . This software automatically checks the web for updates to the HP Color LaserJet 2820/2830/2840 software.
Scanning system This section contains info rmation about the following topics. ● Scanning methods ● HP Scan software ● Scan drivers Scanning methods You can scan from your HP LaserJet all-in-one produc t by using any of the follo wing methods. ■ Open the HP Director.
HP Scan software Use the HP Scan software to scan from the HP LaserJ et all-in-one product or to read from a file and then complete any of the following tasks with the data: ■ Save the scanne d item to a file. ■ Attach the scanned item to an e-mail.
Figure 2 -8 hp LaserJet Scan dialog box Click Settings to open a more detailed property dialog box called th e Scan Settings dialog box, wher e you can make changes to the scan settings. The tabs that are avail able in the Scan Settings dialog box depend o n the destination that yo u select on the HP LaserJet Scan dialog box.
CAUTION If you move the My Documents folder, the My Scans folder d oes not follow to the new location. It remains h ard-coded to the curre nt-user's home, and scan jobs continue to be stored there . Selecting the third-par ty destination option saves the sca nned image to a file of the specified file type.
NOTE A network administrator must initiate the scan and fax featur es. Faxing is not available for the HP Color LaserJet 2820 produ ct. TWAIN driver The HP Color Lase rJet 2820/2830/2 840 all-in-one product software includes a TWAIN driver user interface that provid es great flexibility and a wide range of image-q ual ity options.
TWAIN dr iver user in terface Figure 2-10 TWAIN dr iver user interface The TWAIN user int erface co ntains the following option s: ■ New Scan. Use this contro l to rescan the image.
■ Zoom. Use this control to zoom in on the selected area of th e scan. This automatically starts a rescan if one is neede d to obtain a clear imag e. ■ Reset Tools. Use th is option to reset all the controls to thei r default values. To set additional sca n settings, on the Scan menu, click Scan preferences .
WIA has its own user interface. It is relatively si mple and does not contain th e wide range of image- quality options tha t are available in the TWAIN d river user interface. When you us e the WIA scan driver, you must modify the brightness and contrast after you perform the scan.
HP Send Fax sof tware NOTE The HP Color LaserJet 2820 al l-in- one product does not support faxing. Use the HP Send Fax software to send faxes from your computer. To use the HP Send Fax software, click Start , click Programs , click HP , select the name of your HP L ase rJet all-in-one product, and then click Send Fax .
In some cases, faxing from the co mputer is more convenient than fa xing from the HP LaserJet all-in- one control panel, su ch as in the following examples.

What's this? Help "What's this?" Help is su pported in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. You can gain access to "What' s this?" Help messages in any of the followin g ways: ■ Right-click a control and click What's this? , and a pop-up Help window appears.
A set of 92 PS Leve l 3 soft fonts is included with th e printing-system software. If you want to permanently install the fonts in the printer, HP postscript level 3 emulation fonts are a lso available from HP in a n optional font DIMM.

Advanced Prin ting Features When the Advanced Pr inting Feature s setting is Enabled , metafile spooling is turned on and Finishi ng tab options such as Page Or der , Booklet Layout , and Page s per Sheet are available, depending on your product. For norma l printing, leave the Advanced Pri nting Features setting at the default ( Enabled ).

Raster Compression (HP PCL 6 Unidriver only) Use the Raster Compre ssion feature to sele ct the graphics compression method: ■ Automatic . The software determines the best compression method to use. ■ Best Quality . Forces the software to use a lossless compression method.

Default Print Settings When you select Default Print Settings , nearly all of the settings are restored to the combination that existed after the driver was installed (the origi nal se ttings).

To create a custom paper size, click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers (Windows 2000) or Printers and Faxes (Windows XP or Windows Server 2003). Click the File menu, cl ick Server Properties , and then select the Create a new form check box.

To configure th e Use Different Paper/Covers options for a p rint job For each option, you can set a different tray using the Source Is: drop-down men u. For some options, the Type is : drop-d own menu is also availa ble. 1 To use different pa per or cover stock, select the Use Different Paper/Covers check box.
The Front Cover and Back Cover options are as follows: ■ Add a Blank or Prep rinted Cover check box ■ Source is: drop-down menu ■ Type is: drop-down menu When you select Front Cover or Back Cov er , you must also select the Add a Bla nk or Preprinted Cover check box to enable the setting.
The Size is: driver setting for the first page applies to the entire print job. When this is set, the setting becomes unava ilable for all the othe r Use Differ ent Paper/Covers options. Document preview image The document p review image is a line -drawn image of a page that represents graphics and text.
Print Task Quick Sets Use the Print Task Quick Sets control to store the current combinat io n of driver settings that are found on all other Printing Preferences driver tabs. Print task q u ick sets are either preset or user-defined printing specif ications, such as pape r size and pages per sheet.

Rotate by 180 degrees check box Select this feature to rotate the document image on th e paper 180°. For example: If the return ad dress on an envelope is smudged, try usin g this setting an d feed the envel ope so that the return address area is fed into the prod uct first.
Print Task Quick Sets The Print Task Quick Sets control i s available on e ach Printing Pre ference tab, and is used to store the current combination of driver sett ings found on all of the othe r tabs. Print Task Quick Sets are either preset or user-defined printin g specifications, su ch as paper size and pagers per sheet.

General Use the General setting group to control the Edge Control , Halftone , and RGB settings for all color printing. Edge Control Edge Control determines how ed ges are rendered. Edge Control consi s ts of these compon ents: Adaptive Halftoning and Trapping .
RGB Color The RGB Co lor settings affect the color treatment for ob ject types and determines how colors are rendered. The options are Default (sRGB) , Vivid , and Device .

Available PostScript Memory This option specifies the amount of available PS memory and provides a spin box for changing this value. Convert Gray Graphics to Post Script Gray This option specifi es whether to convert the true gr ay (RGB value) in graphics to the gray th at the PS Emulation Unidriver provides. 7 Software installation for Windows operating systems NOTE This chapte r covers installation about the HP LaserJet all-in-one product software for Windows only.
Installation overview NOTE The ReadIRIS softwar e uses a separate installer th at comes on a separate CD. The software for the HP Color LaserJet 2 820/2830/2840 all-in-one products comes on a single CD. On Windows systems, the Setup program installs the HP La serJet all-in-one sof tware from the CD onto the hard disk and updates Wi ndows files.
For all of the supporte d platforms, each install optio n presents a series of query dialog boxes th at guide you through the in stallation process. You are aske d to provide information about your computer environment.
Installation options The HP LaserJet a ll-in-one software can be used with the HP Co lor LaserJet 2 820/2830/2840 all-in-one products in the following configurations: ■ Install the full HP La serJet all-in-one software on a computer tha t is directly connected to the pr oduct through a USB port.
NOTE Using Windows shari ng, the person who uses th e computer that is directly connected to the product can allow other users o n the network to print to the product. When the product is shared, in stall the print driv ers on all of the computers that you want to be able to print to the product.
5 Type the path and share name of the HP Color Lase rJet 2820/2830/2 840 all-in -one product to which you want to connect. -or- Click Browse and navigate to find the HP Color Lase rJet 2820/2830/284 0 all-in-one product to which you want to connect.
To connect an HP La serJet all-in-one product to a network, use the followin g instructions: 1 Connect the HP Color LaserJet 28 20/2830/2840 to the network. 2 Turn on the HP Color La serJet 2820/2830/2840. NOTE You must complete the powe r-up sequence in this ord er or the installer discovery utility fails to recognize the prod uct.
Installing the print driver only Use the following instructions to install only the p rint driver. Print driver installation fo r Windows 98 SE or Windo ws Me You might need to install the Install Network Prin ter Wizard to co mplete the following procedure.
6 To install the HP PCL 6 Unidriver (color), naviga te to the root folder o f the CD (where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive) and click OK . The Install Printer Softwa re dialog box appears.
