Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the device, be sure that c ables are placed in th eir proper locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e device. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.

Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transporti ng equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are as many as 3 3 screws, in 3 different sizes, that mu st be re moved, replaced, o r loosened when servicing the computer. Remove the WLAN mo dule: 1. Disconnect the black WLAN ante nna cable (1) from the WLAN modu le “Main” terminal. 2. Disconnec t the gray WLAN an tenna cable (2) from the WLAN module “Aux” terminal. 3. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screw (3) that secures the WLAN module to the system board.

4. Remove the WWAN module (4) by pulling the module away from the slo t at an angle. NOTE: WWAN modules are designed with a notch (5) to prevent incorrect inse rtion.
2. Remove the memory module (3) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion.
2. Remove the RTC b attery (2) from the socket on the system board. Reverse this procedure to in stall the RTC battery. Wh en installing the RTC battery, be su re the “+” sign faces up. Hard dr ive NOTE: The hard drive bracket is included in the Ha rd Drive Hardware Kit, spare part number 651899-001.
4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 37 ). 5. Remove the service access cover (see Service access cover on page 38 ). Remove the hard drive: 1. Remove the Phillips PM2.0x5.0 screw (1) that secures the hard drive to the computer. 2. Disconnec t the hard drive conn ector cable (2) .
c. Remove the hard drive bracket (3) . Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the h ard drive. Component replacement procedures 47.

2. Remove the two Phillips PM2.0x5.0 screws th at secure the keyboar d to the computer. 3. Position the computer on its side. Using a screwdriver or a similar tool, push firmly through the bottom of the base enclosure (1) to release the keyboard (2) .
6. Release the zero inserti on force (ZIF) conne ctor (2) to which the keyboard cab le is attached, an d then disconnect the keyb oard cable (3) from the system board. 7. Lift the keyboard (4) straight up to remove it from the computer. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard.

4. Remove the five Phillips PM2.0x5.0 screws (3) from the top cover . 5. Turn the computer upsid e down, with the front toward you. 6. Release the TouchPa d ZIF connector (1) and disconn ect the TouchPad cable (2) . (The ZIF cable is attached with double-sid ed adhesive.
9. Lift the front edge (1) of the top cover until it disengage s fro m the base enclosure, and then remove the top cover (2) by lifting it straight up.

5. Remove the plastic rear corner covers (3) . NOTE: The rear corn er covers are included in the Plastics Kit, spare pa rt number 652308-0 01. 6. Remove the two Phillips PM2.0x5.0 screws (4) , one beneath each rear corn er cover. 7. Remove the WLAN antenna cables (1) from the routing channel.

3. Tilt the system board away from the base enclosure (3) . 4. Disconnect the power cabl e (1) from the system board. 5. Remove the system board (2) by sliding it up an d away from the base en closure. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the system board.

4. Remove the fan (3) from the system board. NOTE: Due to the adhe sive quality of the th ermal material locate d between the fan a nd system board components, it may be necessary to move th e fan fr om side to side to detach it from the system board.

5 Setup Utility Starting Setup Utility Setup Utility is a ROM-based information and custom ization utility that can be used even when your Windows operating system is not working. The utility reports information abou t the computer and prov ides settings for st artup, security, and other preferences.
Navigating and selectin g in Setup Utility Because Setup Utility is not Wind ows based, it does not support the TouchP ad. Navigation and selection are by keystroke.
If the Setup Utility menu s are not visible, press esc to return to the menu di splay. Then use the arrow keys to select Exit > Exit Discardi ng Changes , and then press enter .

7 Backup and recovery ● Restore ● Creating restore media ● Performing a system restore ● Backing up and re covering your infor mation Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and restore it if ever needed.
Creating restore media HP recommends that you create either a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive to be sure that you can restore your computer to its o riginal factory state if the hard drive fails, o r if for any reason you cannot restore using th e recovery partition tools.
Note the following when performing a system restore: ● You can restore on ly the system that you ha ve previously backed up. H P recommends that yo u use HP Recovery Manager to create either a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive as soon as you set up the compute r.
Restoring using the dedi cated recovery partition (select models only) When using the de dicated recove ry partition , there is an optio n to back up pictur es, music and oth er audio, videos and movies, recorded TV shows, d o cuments, spreadshe ets and presentations, e-mails, Internet favorites and sett ings during this process.
Changing the computer boot order To change the boot or der for recovery discs: 1. Restart the computer. 2. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 fo r boot options. 3. Select Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive from the boot option s window.
3. Open a word-processing document, and th en select Edit > Paste . The screen image is adde d to the documen t. 4. Save and print the document. Using Windows Backup and Restore Guidelines: ● Be sure that the computer is co nnected to AC power before you start the backu p process.
Using Windows system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recove r back to that po int if you want to reverse subsequent changes.

9 Recycling Battery When a battery has reached the end of its use ful life, do n ot dispose of the ba ttery in general household waste. Follo w the local laws and regulati ons in your area for computer b attery disposal. Display WARNING! The backlight contains mercury.
Perform the following ste ps: 1. Remove all screw covers (1) and screws (2 ) that secure the display bezel to the display assembly. 2. Lift up and out o n the left and ri ght inside edges (1) and the top and b ottom inside edges (2) of the display beze l until the bezel disengag es from the display assemb ly.
4. Disconnect all disp lay panel cables (1) from the display i nverter and remove the in verter 2. 5. Remove all screws (1) that secure the display panel a ssembly to the display enclosure. 6. Remove the display panel assembly (2) from the display enclosure.
10. Remove the display pan el frame (2) from the display panel. 11. Remove the screws (1) that secure the backlight cover to the display panel. 12. Lift the top edge of the backlig ht cover (2) and swing it outward. 13. Remove the backlight cover. 14.
17. Remove the backlight frame from th e display panel. WARNING ! The backlight contains mercury. Exercise caution when removing and handling t he backlight to avoid damag ing this compon ent and causin g exposure to the mercu ry. 18. Remove the backlight from the backlight frame.
