Driver a nd software 2 - 17 2 Automatic Emulation Selection Note This section is for HL-2070N. This prin ter has an Auto matic Emulation Sel ection feat ure. When the pri nter receives da ta from the c omputer, it automatical ly chooses the emulati on mode.
3 3 - 1 3 Control panel This secti on refers to t he four Light Emit ting Diodes (LEDs) ( Toner , Dru m , Paper , Ready ) a nd a c ontrol panel button ( Go ) o n the contr ol panel. The LED indications shown in the ta ble below are used in the illustr ations in this chapter .
Control pan el 3 - 2 3 LED Printer status Sleep mode The po wer switc h is off or the pr inter is in Sle ep mode . Pressin g the Go button wakes up the p rinter from Sle ep mode to Ready m ode. Ready to prin t The pri nter is ready to print. Warming up The pri nter is war ming up.

Control pan el 3 - 5 3 Service call indications If there is an err or that cannot be cleared by the user, the printer will show that a service call is needed by lighting up all t he LEDs as sho wn below. If you see the service call indicati on above, turn off the power switch, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on and try to print again.

Control pan el 3 - 7 3 Control panel b utton (Go bu tton) The control panel but ton has the f ollowing functions: Wake-up If the print er is in Sleep mode, press the Go button to wake the print er up and go to the Ready state. Error recovery If there is an err or, the print er will recov er automatical ly from some errors.
Control pan el 3 - 8 3 Print a test page You can use the Go button or t he print er driver to pri nt a tes t page. Using control panel button 1 Turn off the printer . 2 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in . 3 Hold down t he Go button as you turn on the power swit ch.
Control pan el 3 - 9 3 Print a Printer Settings page You can print the curr ent settings using the control panel butt on or printer driver . Using the control panel button 1 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in . 2 Turn on t he printer and wait until the printer is in the Ready st ate.
Control pan el 3 - 10 3 Print Fonts (For HL-2070N) You can print a list o f the internal fonts using t he control panel button or pri nter drive r. Using the control panel button 1 Turn off the printer . 2 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in .
Control pan el 3 - 11 3 Network factory default setting (For HL-2070N) If you wish to r eset the print ser ver back t o its default factory settings ( resetting all infor mation such as the password and IP addre ss information), please follow these steps: 1 Turn off the printer .
4 4 - 1 4 Options This print er has the followi ng optional print servers. Cli ck the symbol L i n the table to see th e informatio n for each item. Wireless print serve r (NC-2200w) An optional net work print ser ver (NC-2200w) all ows you to print in a wireless envir onment through the USB interf ace.
Opti ons 4 - 2 4 Print server (NC-2 100p) (For HL-2040) An optional networ k print server (NC-2100p) allows you to connect to your network through the parall el interf ace.

Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 2 5 Toner cartridge The life of the original t oner cartridge that came with the pri nter may be eit her a starter *1 or st andard *2 toner cartridge, and depends on the model and countr y you bought the printer in. *1 The starter toner cartridge will print up to 1,500 A4 or Letter-size single-sided pages at 5% coverage.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 3 5 Toner Life End message If the LED shows the message below, the printer has run out of to ner or the toner is not evenly di stributed inside the cartridge . Replacing the toner cartridge Note • To ensure high quali ty printing , make sure you use quali ty Brother toner cartridges.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 4 5 3 Push down the blue lock lever and take the t oner cartridge o ut of the drum uni t. Note • Be sure to seal u p the toner cartri dge tight ly in a bag so that toner powder does not spil l out of the car tridge.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 5 5 5 Pull off the protec tive cover. CAUTION • Wait to unpack the toner ca rtridge unti l immediately bef ore you put it in the printer. If toner car tridges are left unpacked for a long time the tone r life will be short ened.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 6 5 6 Put the new toner cartridge fi rmly into the drum unit unti l you hear it lock into pl ace. If you put it in properl y, the lock le ver will lift automaticall y. 7 Clean the primary cor ona wire inside th e drum unit by gently sl iding the blue tab from right t o left and l eft to right several ti mes.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 7 5 Drum unit This print er can print up to 12,000 pages * with one d rum unit. * At 5% print cover age (A4 or Lett er size). T he actual nu mber of pri nted pages wi ll vary depe nding on the average type of print job an d paper.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 8 5 Replacing the drum unit Note We recommend that you clean the printer when you r eplace the drum unit. See Cleaning on page 5-11. Follow t hese steps t o replace the drum unit . 1 Make sure that the printer is turned on and the Drum LE D i s b li n k in g .

Note • Be sure to seal up the drum u nit tigh tly in a bag so that toner powder does not spi ll out of the uni t. • Discard the used dr um unit accordi ng to l ocal regulation s, keeping it separate from domest ic waste.

When you replace the tone r cartridge o r the dru m unit, make sure you clean the i nside of the printer . If printed pages a re sta ined with toner, c lean the in side of t he printer with a dry , lint -free cl oth.
Rout ine ma int enanc e 5 - 12 5 3 Wipe the outside of the printe r with a soft cloth to remove dust. 4 Remove anything that i s stuck inside the paper tray. 5 Wipe the inside of th e paper tray with a soft cloth to rem ove d ust. 6 Put the paper tray fi rmly back in the printe r.
