1 - 1 1 Getting Star ted About This Manual This User’ s Guide provides installation and programming instruct ion s f or the Granit 1280i corded industr ial scanners. Product specifications, dimensions, warr anty , and cust omer suppor t informa tion are also included.
1 - 2 Reading T echniques The Granit 1280i scanner has a bright red scanning line that corresponds to the scan ner’ s horizontal field of view . The scanning line is smaller when the scanner is closer to the c ode and larger wh en it is f ar the r from the code.
2 - 1 2 Pr ogramming the Interface Intr oduction This chapter describes how to progr am your system f or the desired interf ace. Pr ogramming the Interface - Plug and Play Plug and Play bar codes pro vide instant scanner set up for commonly used interf aces.
2 - 2 V erifone ® Rub y T erminal Default Settings Scan the following Plug and Pla y code to program the scanner for a V er ifone Ruby terminal. This bar code sets the baud rate to 1200 bps and the data format to 8 data bi ts, no parity bit, 1 stop bit.
2 - 3 NCR Bioptic A ux P ort Configuration Scan the follo wing Plu g and Play code to program the scanner for an NCR bioptic scanner auxiliar y por t configuration.
2 - 4 RS232 Modifiers RS232 Baud Rate Baud Rate sends the da ta from the scanner to the ter minal at the specified rate. The host ter minal must be set for the same baud rate as the scanner .
2 - 5 RS232 W ord Length: Data Bits, Stop Bits, and P arity Data Bits sets the word length at 7 or 8 bits of data per characte r . If an application requires only ASCII Hex characters 0 through 7F decimal (text, digits, and punctuation), select 7 data bits.
2 - 6 RS232 Handshaking RS232 Handshaking allows control of data transmission from the scan ner using software commands from the host d e vice. RTS / CT S O ff : R TS/CTS is tur ned off so no data flow control is used, but R TS is still activ e. RTS/CTS Off, RTS Inactive: RTS/CTS is turned o ff so no data flow control is used and RTS is inactive.
2 - 7 RS232 Timeout When using Flow Control with Timeout, you m ust program the l ength of the delay y ou want to wait f or CTS from the host. Set the length (in milliseconds) for a timeout by scanning the bar code below , then setting the timeout (fro m 1-65535 mil li- seconds) by scanning digits from the inside back cov er , then scanning Save .
2 - 8 Timeout Retries This setting limits th e number of Communication Timeout retr ies. If the Timeout Retries is set to 0, the transmission is term inated after the initial Communication Timeout. Scan the bar code below , then set the n umber of retr ies (from 0- 255) by scanning digits from the Programming Chart , then scanning Save .
2 - 9 RS232 Defaul ts If you w ant the custom RS232 defa ult se ttings restored to your scanner , scan the RS232 Defaults bar code below . This resets the scanner to the cu stom default settings (see Settin g Custom De faults on p age 1-2). If there are no custom defaults, it will reset the scanner to the factory default settin gs.
2 - 10 NCR Suffix This selection allows you to program an NCR-specific suffi x. Refer to the ASCII Conversion Chart (Code Page 1252) , page A-2 to find the he x equivalent f or the c haracters you want f or the NCR suffix (typ ically , 03 f or ETX).
2 - 11 Scanner -Bioptic P acket Mode P acket Mode On m ust be scanned to se t the scanner’ s f or mat so it is compatible with a bioptic scanner . Def ault = P acket Mode Off.

3 - 1 3 Input/Output Settings P o wer Save Mode P ow er Sav e Mode allows you to automatically set the conditions under which the scanner idles, sleeps, and wak es up . When Off is selected, no po wer saving is used and the scan ner remains powered on until the trigger is pressed.
3 - 2 Beep on BEL Character Y ou ma y wish to force the scanner to beep upon a comman d sent from the host. If you scan the Beep on BEL On bar code below , the scanne r will beep ev ery ti me a BEL character is receiv ed from the host. Default = Beep on BEL Off .
3 - 3 Beeper Pitch – Good Read The beeper pitch codes modify the pitch (frequency) of the beep the sca nner emits on a good read. Default = Medium. Beeper - T ransmit Order The beeper transmit order deter mines when the good read b eep occurs. The scanner can be set to emit the good read beep either before or after data transmission.
3 - 4 Vibrate Duration If you w ant to set the length f or the good read vibration, scan the bar code below , then set the duration (from 100 - 2,000 milliseconds) by scanning digits from the inside back cov er , then scanning Save .
3 - 5 Number of Beeps – Good Read The number of beeps of a good read can be programmed from 1 - 9. The same n umber of beeps will be applied to the beeper and LED in response to a good read. For e xample, if y ou program this option to hav e five beeps , there will be five beeps and five LED flashes in response to a good read.
3 - 6 Laser Aimer - Scanning Duration Use the Laser Aimer - Scanning Duration bar code to specify how long y ou want the Laser Aimer - Scanning Pattern to remain on after the tri gger is released. Scan the bar code below , then set the dur ation (from 0 - 65535 milliseconds) by scanning digits from the inside back cov er , then scanning Save .
3 - 7 Laser Aimer - Good Read Duration Use the Laser Aimer - Good Read Duration bar code to specify how long you want the Laser Aimer - Good Read Pattern to remain on after a bar code has been successfully re ad.
3 - 8 LED Indicators The green and red LEDs can be programmed to be On or Off and at diff erent bri ghtness le vels to indicate v ario us scanner states. Use the f ollowing bar codes to program the LED indicators. LED Settings Def ault = Red LED On with Laser , Green LED On with Good Scan.
3 - 9 Good Read Delay This sets the min imum amount of ti me befo re the scanner can read another bar code. Def ault = 0 ms (No Delay). User-Specified Good Read Dela y If you w ant to set your o wn le.
3 - 10 Presentation Mode When the scanner is in Presentation Mode , it automatically detects bar codes, th en scans and transmits the data. T o set the time period before the scanner can read the same bar cod e a second time use Reread Delay (page 3-1 1).
3 - 11 Manual Activ ation Laser Timeout - T rigger Settings Y ou can set a timeout f or the length of time the laser remains on and attempting to decode bar codes when the tr igger is held down, and after it is released.
3 - 12 CodeGate ® When CodeGate is On , the trigger is used to allow decode d data to be transmitt ed to the host system. The scanner remains on, scanning and decoding bar codes, but the bar code data is not transmitted until the tr igger is pressed .
3 - 13 End Character Activa tion After Good Read After a bar code is successfully detected and read from the scanner , the illumination can be programmed either to remain on and scanning, or to tur n off . When End Character Activa tion After Good Read is enabled, the illumination tur ns off and stops scanning after a good read.
3 - 14 Deactivation Character This sets the character used to terminate sca nning when using Character Deactivation Mode. On the ASCII Conversion Chart (Code Page 1252) , page A-2, find the hex value th at represents the c haracter you want to use to terminate scannin g.
3 - 15 Blinky Mode When eith er Blinky Mode On or Blinky Alwa ys On/Continuous is scanned, the scanner b links on and off at 50% duty cycle (250 milliseconds on, then 2 50 milliseconds off.
3 - 16 Decode Security This selection allows you to adjust the decod e secur ity needed wh ile scanning. For good quality codes, choose Low to achie ve f ast scan speed. F or cod es prone to mi sreads, choose High . Def ault = Low . Note: Increasing the security level may decrease the scan speed.

3 - 19 P artial Sequence If an output sequence operation is ter minated before all your output sequence criter ia are met, the bar code data acquired to that point is a “par tial sequen ce. ” Scan Discard P art ial Sequence to discard par tial sequences when the output sequence operation is ter minate d bef ore completion.
3 - 20 No Read With No Read turned On , the scanner notifies you if a code cannot be read . If using an EZConfig-Scanning T ool Scan Data Window (see page 7-2 ), an “NR” appears when a code cannot be read. If No Read is turned Off , the “NR” will not appear .
4 - 1 4 Data Editing Prefix/Suffix Overview When a bar code is scann ed, additional information is sen t to the host compute r along with the b ar code data. This group of ba r code data and additional, user-defined data is call ed a “message str i ng.
4 - 2 Example: Add a T ab Suffix to All Symbologies Step 1. Scan Add Suffix . Step 2. Scan 9 , 9 from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual to apply th is suffix to all symbologies. Step 3. Scan 0 , 9 from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual.
4 - 3 Function Code T ransmit When this selection is enabled and function codes are contai ned within the scanned data, the sca nner transmits the functi on code to the te rmin al. Char ts of the se function codes are provided in Supported Interface Ke ys star ting on page 7-2 .
4 - 4 Interc haracter Delay An intercharacter delay of up to 5000 millise conds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between the tr ansmissi on of each character of scanned data. Scan the Intercharacter Dela y bar code bel ow , then scan the number of 5ms delays , and the Save bar code using the Programming Chart inside the back cov er of this manual.
4 - 5 T o remove this delay , scan the Interfu nction Delay bar code, then se t the number of delays to 0. Scan the Save bar code using the Programming Chart inside the back cov er of this manual. Intermessage Dela y An inter message delay of up to 5000 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between each scan transmission.

5 - 1 5 Data Formatting Data Format Editor Intr oduction Y ou ma y use the Data Format Editor to change the scanne r’ s output. For e xample, y ou can use the Data Format Editor to inser t characters at cer tain points in bar code data as it is scanne d.
5 - 2 Step 5. Lengt h Specify what length (up to 9999 characters) of data will be a cceptable for this symbolog y. Scan the four digit data l ength from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual. For ex ample, 50 characte rs is entered as 0050.
5 - 3 Data Format Editor Commands When working with th e Data F or mat Editor , a vir tual cursor is moved along your input data stri ng. The follo wing commands are used to both mov e this cursor to different positions, and to select, replace, and inser t data into the final outpu t.
5 - 4 Send all chara cters up to a particular character F3 Include in the output message all characters from the input message, starting with the ch a racter at the current cursor position and continuing to, but not includi ng, the search character “ss,” followed by an insert character.
5 - 5 Command string: E9 08F40902 E9 is the “Send all but the last characters” command 08 is the number of characters at the end to ignore F4 is the “Inser t a character multiple times” comman.
5 - 6 B3 is the “Inser t symbol ogy name” command F4 is the “Inser t a character multiple times” command 20 is the hex v alue for a space 01 is the number of times the space character is sent .
5 - 7 F1 is the “Send all characters” command 0D is the he x value f or a CR The data is ou tput as: 4567890ABCDEFGHIJ <CR> Move the cursor bac kwar d a number of cha racters F6 Move th e cursor back “n n” characte rs from current cursor position.
5 - 8 The data is ou tput as: DEFGHIJ <CR> Sear ch back ward f or a character F9 Search the input message backward for “xx” character from the current cursor position, leaving the cursor poi nting to the “xx” character. Syntax = F9xx whe re xx stands for the search charac ter’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 9 F1 is the “Send all characters” command 0D is the he x value f or a CR The data is ou tput as: 37692 <CR> Sear ch back ward f or a non-matching cha racter E7 Search the input message backward for the first non-“xx” char acter from the current cursor position, leaving the cursor pointing to the non-“xx” character.
5 - 10 02 is the total count of characters to be replaced, plus the replacement characters (0 is replaced by CR, so total char- acters = 2) 30 is the hex v alue for 0 0D is the he x value f or a CR (t.
5 - 11 ED is the “Check f or a non-numeric character” command F1 is the “Send all characters” command 0D is the he x value f or a CR If this bar code is read, the ne xt data format, if there is one, will be used on this data. If there is no other f or mat, the format fails and the r aw data is output as 1234AB .
5 - 12 Choose one of the follo wing optio ns. Def ault = Data Formatter On, Not Requi red, K eep Prefix/Suffix. Data Format Non- Match Err or T one When a bar code is encountered that doesn’ t match your required data f or mat, the scanner nor mally generates an error tone.
5 - 13 Single Scan Data Format Change Y ou can also switch between data f or mats for a single scan. The next bar code is scanned using an alter nate data format, then re ver ts to the format you ha ve select ed abov e (either Primar y , 1, 2, or 3). F or example , you may ha ve set y our device to the data format you sa ved as Data Format 3.

6 - 1 6 Symbologies This programming section contains the f ollowing menu selections. Ref er to Chapter 8 f or settings and defaults. All Symbologies If you want to decode all the symbologies al lowab le for y our scanner , scan the All Symbologies On code.
6 - 2 Codabar <Default All Codabar Settings> Codabar On/Off Codabar Star t / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leading and trailing ends of the bar code. Y ou ma y either transmit, or not transmit Star t/ Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit .
6 - 3 Codabar Concatenation Codabar suppor ts symbol concatenation. Whe n you enab le c oncaten ation, the scanner look s for a Codabar symbol having a “D” star t character , adjacent to a symbol having a “D” stop character . In this case the two messages are concatenated into one with the “D” characters omitted.
6 - 4 Concatenation Timeout When searching for bar codes during concatenation, you may wish to set a delay used to find the ne xt bar code. Set the length (in milliseconds) for this dela y by scanning the f ollowing bar code, then setting the timeout (from 1-65535 milliseconds) by scanning digits from the Programming Chart , then scanning Save .
6 - 5 Code 39 < Default All Code 39 Settings > Code 39 On/Off Code 39 Star t / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leading and trailing ends of the bar code. Y ou ma y either transmit, or not transmit Star t/ Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit.
6 - 6 Code 39 Redundancy If you are encountering errors when reading Code 39 bar codes, you ma y want to adjust the redundancy count. Redun- dancy adjusts the number of times a bar code is decoded bef o re transmission, which may reduce the number of errors.
6 - 7 Full ASCII If Full ASCII Code 39 decoding is enabled, cer tain characte r pairs within the bar code symbol will be inter preted as a single character . For e xample: $V will be decoded as the ASCII ch aracter SYN, and /C will b e decoded as the ASCII character #.
6 - 8 Interleaved 2 of 5 < Default All Interleaved 2 of 5 Settings > Interleaved 2 of 5 On/Off NULL Characters Inter leav ed 2 of 5 requires an ev en number of characte rs. Wh en an odd number of characters is present, it is due to NULL characters embedded in th e bar code.
6 - 9 Interleaved 2 of 5 Redundanc y If you are encountering errors when reading Interle av ed 2 of 5 bar codes, you ma y w ant to adjust the redundancy count. Redundancy adjusts the number of times a bar code is dec oded before transmission, which may reduce the number of errors.
6 - 10 When Check Character is set to V alidate, b ut Don’t T ransmit , the unit only reads Matrix 2 of 5 bar codes pr inted with a check character , b ut will not transmit the check character with the scanned data.
6 - 11 NEC 2 of 5 < Default All NEC 2 of 5 Settings > NEC 2 of 5 On/Off Check Digit No Check Digit indicates that the scanner rea ds and transmits bar code da ta with or without a check digit.
6 - 12 NEC 2 of 5 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Refer to Message Length Description (page 6-1) for additional inf or mation.
6 - 13 Code 93 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Refer to Message Length Description (page 6-1) for additional inf or mation.
6 - 14 Straight 2 of 5 Industri al (three-bar star t/stop) <Default All Straight 2 of 5 Industrial Settings> Straight 2 of 5 Industrial On/Off Straight 2 of 5 Industrial Redundancy If you are encountering errors when readin g Straight 2 of 5 Industr ial bar codes, y ou may w ant to adjust the redundancy count.

6 - 16 Code 11 <Default All Code 11 Settings> Code 11 On/Off Check Digits Required This option sets whether 1 or 2 ch eck digi ts are required with Code 11 bar codes. Def ault = T wo Check Digits. Code 11 Redundancy If you are encountering errors when reading Code 11 bar codes, you ma y want to adjust the redundancy count.
6 - 17 Code 128 <Default All Code 128 Settings> Code 128 On/Off 128 Group Separator Output If you wish to transmit embedded FNC1 characters as group separators (1B he x) with your Code 128 bar code output, scan the On bar code. When Off is scanned , nothing is transmitted for FNC1 characters .
6 - 18 Code 128 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Refer to Message Length Description (page 6-1) for additional inf or mation.
6 - 19 Concatenation Timeout When searching for bar codes during concatenation, you may wish to set a delay used to find the ne xt bar code. Set the length (in milliseconds) for this dela y by scanning the f ollowing bar code, then setting the timeout (from 1-65535 milliseconds) by scanning digits from the Programming Chart , then scanning Save .
6 - 20 ISBT 128 Predefined C oncatenation Sequences On/Off The follo wing sele ctions allow you to enable or requ ire the Predefined ISBT 128 Concatenation Se quences.
6 - 21 Step 1. Scan the 1st Left Identifier bar code, below. Step 2. Use the Programming Chart to scan 3, D (hex for “=”). Step 3. Scan Save . Step 4. Scan the 2nd Left Identifier bar code, below. Step 5. Use the Programming Chart to scan 4, 7 (hex for “G”).
6 - 22 Content V erification When the On bar cod e is scanned, the check character v alues are output along with the b ar code data, thus allowing you to verify that the check character is in agreem ent with that calculated for the data stream. De fa ul t = O f f.
6 - 23 GS1-128 <Default All GS1-128 Settings> GS1-128 On/Off GS1-128 Application Identifier P arsing This allows a single GS1-128 bar code to be broken into mu ltiple transmissions based on the presence of application iden- tifiers (AI) embedded in the bar code.
6 - 24 GS1-128 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Refer to Message Length Description (page 6-1) for additional inf or mation.
6 - 25 T elepen Redundancy If you are encountering errors when reading T ele pen bar codes, you ma y w ant to adjust the redun dancy count. Redun- dancy adjusts the number of times a bar code is decoded bef o re transmission, which may reduce the number of errors.
6 - 26 UPC-A Check Digit This selection all ows you to specify whether the check digit sh ould be transmitted at the end of the scan ned data or not. Def ault = On .
6 - 27 UPC-A Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner will only read UPC-A bar code s that hav e addenda. Y ou must then tur n on a 2 or 5 digit addenda listed on pa ge 6-26 . Default = Not Required. UPC-A Addenda Separator When this feature is on, there is a sp ace between th e data from the bar code and the data from the addenda.
6 - 28 UPC-A/EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code Use the follo wing codes to e nable or disable UPC-A and EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code. When left on the default setting ( Off ), the scanner treats Coupon Codes and Extended Coupon Codes as single bar codes.
6 - 29 Def ault = Don’t Require Coupon Cod e. UPC-A Number Syst em 5 Addenda Required This setting programs the scanner to requi re any combination of a coupon code, a 2 digit addenda, or a 5 digit add enda on UPC-A bar codes that be gin with a “5.
6 - 30 Addenda Timeout Y ou can set a time dur ing which the scanner loo ks for a coupon code. If a coupon code is not f ound within this time p eriod, the data can be either transmitted or discarded, based on the settin g you are using f or UPC-A/EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code or UP C-A Number System 4 Ad denda Required .
6 - 31 UPC-E0 <Default All UPC-E Settings> UPC-E0 On/Off Most U .P .C. bar codes lead with the 0 nu mber system. T o read these codes, use the UPC-E0 On selection. Def ault = On. UPC-E0 Expand UPC-E Expand e xpands the UPC-E code to the 12 digit, UPC-A format.
6 - 32 UPC-E0 Number System and Check Digit UPC-E0 Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the sca nner will only read UPC-E bar codes that have addenda. Def ault = Not Required . UPC-E0 Addenda Separator When this feature is On , there is a space between the dat a from the bar code and the data from the addenda.
6 - 33 UPC-E0 Leading Zero This feature allo ws the transmission of a leading zero (0) at the beginni ng of scanned data. T o prev ent transmission, scan Off . Default = Off . UPC-E0 Addenda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned UPC-E data.
6 - 34 EAN/J AN-13 <Default All EAN/JAN Settings> EAN/JAN-13 On/Off Con vert UPC-A to EAN-13 When UPC-A Converted to EAN-13 is selected, UPC-A bar codes are conv er ted to 13 digit EAN-13 codes by adding a zero to the f ront. When Do not Con vert UPC-A is selected, UPC-A codes are read as UPC-A.
6 - 35 EAN/JAN-13 Ad denda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned EAN/JAN-13 data. Default = Off f or both 2 Digit and 5 Digit Addenda. EAN/JAN-13 Ad denda Required When Required is scanned, the scanner will only read EAN/JAN-13 bar codes that hav e addenda.
6 - 36 Def ault = Don’t Require 2 Digit Adde nda. EAN-13 Beginning with 290 Addenda Required This setting programs the scanner to require a 5 digit addenda only on EAN-13 bar codes that begin wi th “290.
6 - 37 EAN-13 Beginning with 414/419 Addenda Required This setting programs the scanner to require any combinat ion of a 2 digit addenda or a 5 digit addenda on EAN -13 bar codes that begin w ith a “414” or “4 19.
6 - 38 Don’t Require Ad denda: If you ha ve selected Require Ad denda , and you w ant to disable this f eature, scan Don’t Require Addenda . EAN-13 bar codes are transmitted, depending on the setting you are using f or EAN/JAN-13 Addenda Required .
