INTRODUCTION Thank you for choosing the APC SurgeArrest PM3, PM4, or PM4Y Series Sur ge Protective Device. The APC modular Sur ge Protective Device (SPD) is a high quality , high ener gy surge attenuation system that has been designed to protect sensitive equipment from damaging transient voltage surges.
Unp acking and Preliminary Inspection • Inspect the entire shipping container for damage or signs of mishandling before unpacking the unit. • Remove the cardboard packing and further inspect the unit for any obvious shipping damages.
Page 3 Service Clearance In addition to national and local code requirements, 36 inches of service clearance is needed at the front of the SPD. Equipment Performance T o obtain the maximum system performance, the unit must be located as close to the circuit to be protected as possible, minimizing the interconnecting wire length.
Figure 1. T ypical Parallel Connections NOTE: Safety Ground required for ALL units. Page 4 T able 2: V oltage Rating and Service T ype (by Model) T erminals T erminals have been provided inside the APC modular SPD units for the line (phase), neutral, and equipment safety ground connections.
Wiring Size & Inst allation T orque W ith a parallel connection, the size of the wiring to the SPD is independent of the ampere rating of the circuit to be protected. The recommended wire size is based on the unit’ s transient surge current capabilities.
Page 6 PM SERIES INST ALLA TION INSTRUCTIONS (T ypical Unit - Three Phase WYE, 4 Wire, plus Ground) This section provides basic installation instructions for the PM Series SPD. Per UL 1449 Paragraph 1.4, SPD’ s “are intended for installation on the load side of the main overcurrent protection”.

Operation and Features SPD’ s do not require a great deal of operator intervention after installation. NOTE: The PM Series has a green LED for each phase which extinguishes when the module is no longer providing protec- tion (fault condition).
Page 10 Surge Counter Option In units so equipped, the surge counter option provides a means to total the number of transient voltage sur ges encountered since the counter was last reset. The sur ge counter circuitry includes a “supercap”. This will provide power up to four days to retain memory should a power outage occur .
Periodic Inspection and Cleaning Inspection of the SPD should be performed periodically to maintain reliable system performance and continued transient voltage sur ge protection.

• MAINTENANCE OF THIS SURGE PROTECTIVE DEVICE SHOULD BE PERFORMED BY QUALIFIED ELECTRICAL PERSONNEL ONL Y . • DURING NORMAL OPERA TION, HAZARDOUS VOL T AGES ARE PRESENT INSIDE THE UNIT . • WHEN SERVICING THIS UNIT , BE SURE T O FOLLOW ALL ELECTRICAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
Diagnostic Board Removal & Replacement Instructions T o remove the Diagnostic Board, refer to Figure 8 and proceed as follows: 1. Disconnect power to the SPD. 2 . Remove the board from the standof fs. 3. Remove the connectors one at a time from the existing board and insert them into the appropriate connector on the replacement board.
Surge Module Removal & Replacement Instructions Sur ge modules within the SPD may become damaged and require replacement. T o remove and replace a surge module, refer to Figure 9 and proceed as follows: 1. Disconnect power to the SPD. 2. Open the door on the unit by loosening the two screws that secure the door latches in place.
T able 4: Replacement Parts List Replacement Part s Listing APC offers the items listed in T able 4 as field replaceable items. Page 16 l e d o M C P A r e b m u N m e t s y S e g a t l o Vn o i t p i.
