4 2: I NST A LLA TION The UPS has a “rack” des ign so it can be m ounted in a 19-inch (46.5 cm ) equipm ent rack. Hardw are is provi ded. U NPACKING 1. Inspect the UPS upon receipt. APC design ed robust packag ing for y our product. How ever, acci- dents an d damage m ay occu r during sh ipment.
5 5. Connect th e battery and attach th e front bezel. 6. Connect th e equipmen t and power to th e UPS. 7. Turn on th e UPS. I NSTALLIN G THE M OUNTING R AILS I N THE R ACK Install the m ounting rails in th e rack. Directions are included w ith the rail kit.
6 3. Locate the battery m odule handle at the top of the battery f ace plate . 4. Be careful during th is step—the battery module is heavy . Pull the battery m odule handle toward y ou to slide the battery m odule out of the UPS. DO NOT pull on the battery cables or the wh ite cord.
7 C ONNECTING THE B AT TERY AND A TTACHING THE F RONT B EZEL 1. Facing the f ront of the UPS, locate the battery cables and the UPS battery connector jack to the right of th e battery m odule. 2. To connect the battery connector plug to the battery jack, push the plu g into the jack so the metal pieces inside each part are touch ing.
8 4. Turn on all conn ected equipmen t (loads). To use the UPS as a m aster ON/OFF sw itch, be sure all connected loads are switched on. The loads will n ot be p owered un til the UPS is turned on. 5. Add any optional accessories. See th e documen tation accompany ing th e accessory f or details.
9 3: O PER A TION I NDICATORS A ND C ONTROLS ON THE S MART -U PS The APC Un interru ptible Pow er Supply (UPS) is des igned to prev ent blackou ts, brow nouts , sags an d surges from reaching y our computer an d other valuable electronic equipmen t.
10 S ELF -T EST Automatic Self-Test The UPS performs a s elf-test au tomatically when turned on, and ev ery tw o week s thereafter (by def ault). Refer to the User Configurati on Items for details on changing the default interval. Autom atic self-test eases m aintenance requiremen ts by elimin ating the need for periodic manual self -tests.
11 Voltage Trim This LED illumin ates to indicate the UPS is co mpensatin g for a high util- ity v oltage. Voltage Boost This LED illumin ates to indicate the UPS is co mpensatin g for a low utility volta ge.
12 S MAR T -UPS R EAR P ANEL The rear panel has the input and output conn ectors, computer interface port, and default setting bu t- tons for the low battery w arning level an d voltage sensitivity in dicator.
13 To red uce UPS sensitivity , press the voltag e sensitivity button. Use a pointed object (su ch as a pen) to do so. Press th e button once to set sensitivity to reduced . Press it again to set sensitivity to low . Press the button a third time to reset normal sensitivity.
14 O N -B A TTERY O PERATION The Smart-UP S switches to battery oper ation auto matically if the utility power fails. W hile running on-battery , an internal alarm sounds (periodic beeps). Pre ss the button (f ront panel) to silen ce the UPS alarm (for th e current alarm only).

17 5: S T ORAGE A ND M A INTENA NCE S TORAG E S TORAGE C ONDITIONS Store the UPS covered and flat (rack mou nt orientation) in a cool, dry location, with its batteries fully charged. Disconnect any cables connected to the computer interface port to avoid unnecessary bat- tery dr aina ge.
18 6: T RA NSPORTING Y OUR S MA RT -UPS R EMOVING THE UPS FROM THE R AC K Always DIS CONNECT T HE BATTE RY before ship ping the UPS to avoi d dam age durin g transport. (U.S. Federal Regulation requires that batteries are disconnected during shipment.
