GB - 11 Steering Lever s (988100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 110, 112) The steering lev ers are used to steer , operate in f orward and re verse, and stop the unit.
GB - 12 PT O Clutc h (988114, 115, 118, 119, 313) Pull the PT O (po wer tak e off) s witch past On (1) to Reset (2) to engage the mow er blades . Push the PT O s witch Off (3) to disengage the mow er blades . NO TE: Pull PT O s witch to Reset (2) to engage mo wer blades after oper ator presence control has been released.
GB - 13 6. Grasp recoil star ter handle and pull rope out slowly until it pulls harder . This is the compression stroke . 7. Let the rope rewind slo wly . 8. Pull rope with rapid continuous full arm stroke to star t engine. Allo w rope to rewind slo wly .
GB - 14 • T o mov e straight f orward; slowly release both steering lev ers to the full outw ard position. • T o stop unit in neutral, hold le v ers in the neutral position. • T o lock unit in neutr al, engage both steering latches. • T o turn to the left, pull the left hand lev er up .
GB - 15 • T o mov e straight f orward, slowly push control le v ers f orward. • T o stop unit motion, allow control le vers to return to neutral. • T o turn to the left, push the r ight hand control le v er f orward. • T o turn to the r ight, push the left hand control le v er f orward.
GB - 16 NO TE: It ma y be necessary to adjust cutting height in steps to keep dec k from binding. LAWN STRIPER ADJUSTMENT (44" and 48" decks; optional on 32" and 36" dec ks) The striper drags behind the deck and shapes g rass as you mo w .
GB - 17 * Change oil after fi rst 8 hours of operation and e v ery 100 hours thereafter . CHECK SAF ETY INTERLOC K SYSTEM T est the saf ety interlock system at each operation. If the system does not function properly , do not oper ate the unit until repairs are made.
GB - 18 CHECK BATTERY (988104) T erminals Inspect batter y and terminals ev er y 25 hours. T o clean terminals: 1. Remov e battery cover . 2. Remov e battery cables from terminals.
GB - 19 5. Adjust trac king if needed. T r y each of the f ollowing steps until the unit tracks straight. It ma y not be necessar y to perf or m all the steps. If unit turns to the right : 1. Reduce the air pressure in the left tire. 2. Increase the air pressure in the right tire.
GB - 20 REPLACE T RACTION BELTS 1. T urn off the engine, remov e the ke y and allo w unit to cool. 2. Release the steering lev ers (988100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 110, 112). 3. Raise the rear of the unit so that the drive wheels are off the ground. 4. Remov e traction belt guard.
GB - 21 ADJUST SHIFT LEVER LINKA GE The transmission shift le v er is attached to the transmission shift arm with two 5/16-18 bolts (Figure 11). T o adjust: 1. Stop the engine. Remov e ignition key . Put PT O le v er in the "OFF" position. Put the shift lev er in neutral.
GB - 22 3. Repeat f or each inspection slot. T o adjust: 1. If necessar y , loosen gap adjustment nuts until a .005" f eeler gauge fi ts between armature and rotor . 2. Slide a .012" f eeler gauge between armature and rotor . 3. Tighten gap adjustment nut until there is slight contact on f eeler gauge.
GB - 23 5. Make the fi nal jumper cab le connection to the engine bloc k or the fur thest g round point a wa y from the discharged batter y . 6. Star t engine (See Star ting and Shut Off on page 12). If engine will not star t after se v eral tries, unit or batter y ma y need ser vice.
GB - 24 MOWER BLADES NO TE: If mo wer is used under sandy soil conditions , replace blades when air lifts become eroded through at ends (Figure 18). Remove 1. T urn the engine off. Remov e the ignition k ey . Remov e the ignition wire from the spark plugs.
