4 1.7 Selec ting the Range The range selected a ut om atically determ ines t he range ring interval, t he number of range rings and puls e repetition rate. Press the [+] or [-] key to select a range. The range and range ring i nterval appear at the top left-hand corner on t he screen.
5 A co mmon mistake is too over-adjust t he [STC] key so that the surf ace clut ter is completely rem oved. By setting up for maximum STC effect, you will see ho w dangerous this can be; a dark zone will be created near the center of the screen, causing a loss of close-in targets.
6 1.11 Ra nge Rings The range rings are the concent ric circles around own ship an d t hey provide an estimat e o f target range. The selected range scale autom atically determines the number of rings and t heir int erval is displayed at t he upper-lef t-hand corner on the screen.
7 1.15 Measu ring th e Bearing The bearing t o a target can be m easured by the cursor (see paragraph 1. 12) and b y the EBL (Electronic Bearing Line).

11 1.23 Echo Stretc h On long ranges target echoes t end to shrink in the range direct ion, making them difficult to see. On short and m edium ranges such as 1.5, 3 and 6 nm range scales, t he sa m e sized targets get sm aller on screen as they approach o wn ship.
