1-1 1. PRINCIPLE OF THE AUT OPILOT Principle of A u topilot An autopilot is an auto matic device for steering a vessel and m aintaining its heading in an i nt ende d direction.
1. PRI NCI PLE OF TH E AUT OPI LO T 1-2 Principle o f Operatio n In the AUTO modes, the heading inf ormation f rom a heading sensor is continuousl y com p ared with the course that is set on the autopilot’s controller . (I n the NA V mode, the course to the waypoint is received from a plotter connected to the NA Vpilot-51 1/520/61 1).
2-1 2. BASIC OPERA TION 2.1 Operating Controls Course control knob** Rotate: Selects menu items and options; Sets the course on Auto mode. Press: Confirms the menu setting. STBY/POWER key Long press: Turns power off. Momentary press: Turns power on; Selects the STBY (manual) mode.

3-1 3. STEERING MODES The NA Vpilot-51 1/ 52 0/61 1 system is capable of six primary steering modes: STBY (m anual), AUT O, NA V , T URN, REMOTE (FU and NFU) and DODGE. 3.1 STBY Mode After turning on the power , the equipm ent goes to the STBY m ode. This is a manual st eering m ode.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-2 3.2 A U T O Mode 3.2.1 Using the A UT O mode The NA Vpilot-51 1/ 520/61 1’ s AUTO mode steers the boat automatically on a course set by the opera tor . Note: The AUTO mode will not com pensate for the effects of wind or tide, which can push you off course in the ath w ar t ship dire ction.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-3 3.2.2 A D V A NCED A UT O mode AUTO mode will maintain a set course, but your v essel’s course may be shifted by the effects of current or wind. ADV ANCED AUT O mode m aintains a set course while compensat ing for the effects o f wind and tide.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-4 3.3 NA V Mode 3.3.1 St arting the NA V mode If a dest inat ion w aypoi n t is set on a GPS / Plotter , t he NA Vpilot-51 1/520/61 1 can receive this inf or m ation and guide the boat to t he dest ination waypoint as determ ined by the pl otter .
3. ST EERING MODE 3-5 3.3.2 Selecti ng sa iling method of NA V mode Y our vessel may go off course when navigatin g between waypoints in t he Na v mode. This can happen w he n, for example, a c omm and is received f rom a remote cont roller . T o get you back on course, two m ethods are available, COURSE and XTE.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-6 3.3.3 Sw itch ing w ay point W h en you arrive at a waypoint on a route while in the NA V mode, you can switch to the next waypoi nt automatically or m anuall y . The AUTO setting will automat ically switch to the next destinat ion waypoint w hen your boat is with in the arrival alarm area (set on the plotte r).
3. ST EERING MODE 3-7 3.3.4 Sel ecti ng the boat’ s steering behavior af ter arriving at your destination w ay point The “Fishing m ode” can be enabled and set up control yo ur boat’ s steering behavior after it reaches the last waypoint in a route.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-8 3.4 TURN Mode The [TURN/ MENU] key provides the various turning m otions depending on the mode in use. There are f iv e different turn type; 180º or 360º turns (f or AUTO mode only), O RBIT , SPIRAL and F IGURE EIGHT . All turn type are available in clockwise and countercl ockwise direction.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-9 180º TURN (for A U T O mo de only) This function changes t he current set course by 180º in the opposite d irection. After the 180º turn completely , the message “TURN CO M PLETED” ap pears. Return to the AUTO mode by pressing the cour se control knob.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-10 ORBIT W h en ORBIT is enabled, your boat will orbit around the boat’s current position. If ORBIT is enabled while in t he NA V mode, the boat orbits around t he (last) waypoint. This function requires a pl otter or GPS be connected.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-1 1 5. Rotate the course control knob t o select " ◄ ORBIT" or " O R BIT ► ", and then press it. The message “ST AR T TO TURN BY FISHING MODE” appears, and the b oat runs for the distance se t at step 3, and then s tarts making an orbit similar to the figure on the previous pa ge.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-12 SPIRAL The boat w i ll spiral in the direction of current heading (STBY), set course (AUTO) or the course to the next waypoint (NA V) that was active at the m o ment that the SPI RAL mode is selected. The spiral speed can be set in the m enu.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-13 4. Press the course control knob, and t hen press [TURN/MENU] key once (twice for STBY m ode) to close the m enu. 5. Press the [TURN/ M ENU] key once to sho w the TURN menu. 6. Rotate the course control knob t o select “RADIUS OF ORBIT”, and t he n press it to circumscribe the value with a dou ble rectangle.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-14 FIGURE E IGHT After the boat has traveled the distance "d" set on the T URN m enu (or main menu), it st arts turning in a figure eight pattern, automatically returning t o the position where t he figure eight mode w as in itiated.

ST EERING MODE 3-15 Naviga ting to T LL p oint W h en TLL (T arget Latitude and Longit ude) data is input from a radar or echo sounder connected in th e STBY , AUT O or NA V mode, the TURN menu appears. Then, you m ay choose how to progress to w ards that posit ion, from ORBIT (port direction, starboard direct ion) or FIGURE EIGHT .
3. ST EERING MODES 3-16 3.5 REMOTE Mode Four types of opt ional re m ote controllers may be connected to t he NA Vpilot-51 1/ 5 20/61 1. These are used t o oper ate the Navpilot-51 1/52 0/61 1 f rom a re m o te locatio n. Dial t y p e remote control l er (F A P-5551, 55 52) This remot e controller can onl y be use d w hen in the AUTO or NA V mode.

ST EERING MODE 3-17 FU is one of auto stee ring modes, which outputs an absolute value determined with the course control knob to drive the rudder , thus changing the ship’ s course at a given rate o f change towards a set point.. 2. Rotate the dial on t he remote controller t o set th e rudder angle.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-18 Button (F AP-621 1, 621 2), Leve r (F AP-6221, F AP-6222), Dodge (F A P-6231, 6232) t y pe remote controller These controllers m ay be used in the ST BY , AUTO and NA V modes. 1. For button and lever t y pe rem ote controllers, turn on the remote controller power .
3. ST EERING MODE 3-19 2. For butt on and dodge remote controllers, press the [PORT] or [STBD] key on the remot e controller . For the lever type, position the lever f or the direction.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-20 3.6 DODGE Mode The DODGE m ode is u sef ul in situations where you need to quickl y take control of the helm to avoid an obstruction. 3.6.1 Dodgi ng i n STBY mode 1. Press the [PO R T] or [STBD] key down to st eer appropriately until the b oat finishes t he turning.
3. STEERING MODE 3-21 3.6.2 Dodgi ng in AUT O or NA V mode 1. Press the [PORT] or [ STBD] key down to change the course u ntil th e boat finishes to avoid the obstructio n. The equipment goes into the DODGE mode and the audible alarm sounds when one of the above keys is operated, to alert you to dodge operation.

W hen t he m enu is accessed while in either the AUTO or NA V modes, only the menu items that are m ost frequent ly used in those m odes are show n.
4. MENU OPERA T IO N 4-2 4.1.1 Setting p arameters The P ARAMETER SETUP m enu sets various parameters f or the control of the NA Vpilot -51 1/5 20/61 1. 1. In the STBY mode, press the [T URN/ MENU] key twice to open the ST BY m ode menu. 2. Rotate the course control knob t o select “P ARAMETER SETUP”.
4. MENU OPERA T ION 4-3 3. Rotate the course cont rol knob t o select FULL-AUT O, SEMI-AUTO, MANUAL-CALM, MANUAL-MODERA TE or MANUAL-ROUGH as appropriate, and then press the course control knob. FULL-AUTO: Auto adjustment and self-learning are on. SEMI-AUTO: Auto adjustm ent is on, self-lear nin g is off.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-4 Setting p arameters manually When MANUAL-CALM, MODERA TE or ROUGH is select ed at the previous p aragraph, set MANUAL P ARAMETERS as below . Y ou can set three p arameters for MANUAL function: Wea ther , Rudder gain and Counter rudder .
4. MENU OPERA T ION 4-5 WEA T HER W h en the sea is rough, the boat ’s heading f luct uates to port and starboar d. If the rudder is driven very oft en to maintain t he set course , the helm m echanism m ay wear out. T o prevent this, the weather adj ustment makes the NA Vpilo t-51 1/520/61 1 insensitive to m inute course deviations.
4. MENU OPERA T IO N 4-6 Set rudder gain so that t he boat does not make f requent yaw . The f igure shown below provides general guide li nes for setting rudder gain.
4. MENU OPERA T ION 4-7 Adjusting th e sensitivity in monitori ng the boat’ s tri m The NA Vpilot-51 1/ 520/61 1 continually m onitors the boat’s trim in order to keep the t rim sensitivity optim u m. A low er setting is com m on because boat’s trim usually does not chan ge quickly .
4. MENU OPERA T IO N 4-8 When towi ng the net W h en a boat is in tow of the f ishing gear , its st ern is “dragged” by the net . This causes the boat to stray f rom its intended course. T o keep the boat on course, you need to adjust the trim manuall y , which can be bot hersom e.

5. ALARM S 5-2 5.1.1 Selecting the ala rm buzzer Y ou may choose the buzzer f rom w hich to out put the audio alarm as follows. Use the external bu zzer connected to t he processor unit if the internal buzzer volum e is small.
5. ALARMS 5-3 5.1.3 Setting the watch alarm The watch alarm periodically warns the helm sman to check the autopilot when in the AUTO or NA V mode. 1. Rotate the course control knob t o select “WA TCH ALARM” f rom the ALARM SETUP menu. 2. Press the course control key to show the watch alarm options window .
5. ALARM S 5-4 5.1.5 Setting the cross- track error lim it W h en in the NA V m ode, the XTE alarm will sound when the course err or has exceeded or f ails w ithin t he range set in the following steps: 1. Rotate the course control knob t o select “XT E” from the ALARM SETUP menu.
5. ALARMS 5-5 5.1.6 Setting the speed alarm The speed alarm w arns you when your boat ’ s speed is within, outside, over or under the speed range setting. 1. Rotate the course control knob to select “SPD” f rom the ALARM SETUP menu. 2. Press the course control knob to sho w the spee d alarm options window .
