ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide i Introduction Thank you for purchasing Color Image Scanner Scan Snap S510 (h ereinafter referred to as the "ScanSnap"). The ScanSnap is a scanner that is capable of double-sided scanning in both monochrome and color.

6 2.1 Installing the Supplied Programs "Installation" of programs is the act of copying th e program files supplied with the ScanSnap into the hard disk of your person al computer so that the environment fo r using the ScanSnap is created on the personal comp uter in wh ich you install the program files.

8 ■ Installing Adobe Acrobat Install Adobe Acrobat using the following procedure from the "Adobe Acro bat 7.0 CD-ROM" supplied with the ScanSnap. Operation Prepare the Adobe Acrobat 8.0 CD. 1. Insert the suppli ed "Adobe Acrobat CD" into the CD-ROM drive.

10 ■ Installing ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap Install ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap by using the following procedure fro m the "ABBYY FineReader CD" supplie d with the ScanSnap. Operation Prepare the ABBYY FineReader CD. 1. Insert the "ABBYY FineReader CD" into the CD-ROM drive.

Align the edges of the docu ment. Align the edges of the document as follows: 1) Straighten the edges of the document.
50 Load the document so that the front side of the two-sided documen t (the first page when the document contains more than one sheet) faces the paper chute.
3.3 Loading Documents ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 51 Using the ScanSnap 3 3. Adjust the side guides to the document width. Move the side guides so that there is no gap between the document edge and side guide on both sides. Doing so can e liminate skewing of the document during scanning.
52 ■ Loading Documents Using the Carrier Sheet The Carrier Sheet is a plastic sheet for loading the document specifically for the ScanSnap S510/ S500/fi-5110EOX2 Series. It allo ws you to scan documents that cannot be scanned as it is. The document of larger than A4 size, such as A3 an d B4 sizes, can be scanned by folding it in half.
3.3 Loading Documents ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 53 Using the ScanSnap 3 To "Create facing pages in one image" Use this mode for scanning a document larg er than A4 size such as A3 and B4 sizes.
54 3. In the "Carrier Sheet Settings" window, select "Create facing pages in one image" in the "Mode" drop-down list, and then click the [OK] button . 4. Select "Automatic Detection" in the "Paper size" drop-down list on the [Paper size] tab.

Align the fold with the right edge of the Carrier Sheet so th at the document fits into the Carrier Sheet at the uppe r corner.
3.3 Loading Documents ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 57 Using the ScanSnap 3 ATTENTION • There may be an interstice between th e front and back side images, or a line may appear on the output image. When a sheet of thick pape r is scanned, images on the both r ight and left side may be skewed to a trapezoidal shape.
58 To "Create front and back images separately" Use this mode for scanning a photograph with the Carrier Sheet when you do not want to get scratches on the photograph, or for scanning an i rregular-shaped document such as the clipping of articles, which is difficult to scan as is.

64 4.1 About the ScanSnap Icon All functional properties on the ScanSn ap are managed by ScanSnap Manger. Ordinarily, the ScanSnap Manager icon is ad ded to the task bar at the lower right on the Windows desktop. Clicking this icon shows the fo llowing menus.
4.1 About the ScanSnap Icon ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 65 Setting the ScanSnap 4 ■ Right-Click Menu This menu appears when the Sc anSnap Manager icon is right-clicked. 66 ■ Left-Click Menu This menu appears when the Sc anSnap Manager icon is left-clicked. Selectable profiles are listed on the Left-Click Menu. Select a profile name on this menu, and you can switch between profiles previously configured and added to the profile list.

70 ■ [Add Profile] Button You can add new profiles configured to meet your preferences. ■ [Edit Profile] Button Clicking this button displays th e "Profile Management" wind ow. In this window, you can chan ge profile nam es, delete profiles, and change the order listed.
4.2 Changing Scanning Settings ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 71 Setting the ScanSnap 4 [Application] tab ■ Application: Specify the appli cation to be linked to the ScanSnap to execute. The specified application starts up after the document is scanned with the ScanSnap.

74 [Save] tab ■ Image saving folder: Specify a folder to save scanned ima ges. When you click the [Browse] button, the "Browse for Folder" dialog box appears.

76 Upon clicking the [OK] button, specified se ttings take effect. (An example file name in the format yo u select is displayed un der the [Filename format] button.) ■ Rename file after scanning If this checkbox is marked, the "Save sca nned image as" dialog box appears after scanning.
4.2 Changing Scanning Settings ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 77 Setting the ScanSnap 4 You can change folders to save the scanned images, or rename f iles in this window. HINT • The file is automatically named with a file name previously specified in the "File name format" dialog box.
78 [Scanning] tab ■ Image quality: You can specify mode to scan documents, depend ing on your preferences (whether you want to scan docu ments quickly or at high quality. Select one of the following: • Normal (Fastest) Select this mode when you wi sh to scan documents quickly.
4.2 Changing Scanning Settings ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 79 Setting the ScanSnap 4 ■ Color mode: You can specify whether to scan docu ments in color or black-and-white.
80 ■ Scanning side: You can select the sides to be scanned (sin gle-s ided or double-sided ) by pressing the [SCAN] button on the ScanSnap. Select [Duplex Scan] or [S implex Scan] from the menu. ■ Continue scanning after current scan is fin ished If the checkbox is marked, the follo wing message appears after scanning.
4.2 Changing Scanning Settings ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 81 Setting the ScanSnap 4 - Brightness (Black and White scanning only) You can set the density for sca nning black-and-white images. Moving the slider control to the left lightens scanned imag es while moving the slider control to the righ t darkens scanned images.
82 - Allow automatic image rotation When this checkbox is marked, pages scanned upside down or in the wrong orientation are rotated and output in the right orientati on. - Set the documents with its face up ATTENTION This function detects th e or ientation of a document base d on the text lines.
4.2 Changing Scanning Settings ScanSnap S510 O perator's Guide 83 Setting the ScanSnap 4 [File option] tab ■ File format You can specify the file form at to save sca nned images. Click the down-arrow and select either of the following: • PDF (*.
84 ■ Searchable PDF (OCRs during scan) You can use this function only when PDF is selected in the [File format] drop-down list. By marking this checkbox, you can create a searchable PDF file. ■ Select text recognition language: You can select a language for recognizing text.
