13 Getting to Know Y our LifeBook BATTERY CHARGING INDICATORS Located to the left of each Battery Level indicator is a small arrow symbol. This symbol states whether that specific battery is charging . This indicator will flash if the battery is too hot or cold to charge.
14 LifeBook E8000 Notebook Figure 2-10 Keyboard Keyboard USING THE KEYBOARD Y our Fujitsu LifeBook notebook has an integral 84-key keyboard. The k eys perform all the standard functions of a 101-key k e yboard, incl uding the W indows k eys and other special function keys.
15 Getting to Know Y our LifeBook FUNCTION KEYS Y our LifeBook notebook has 12 function keys, F1 through F12. The functions assigned t o these keys diff er for each application. Y ou should refer to your software documentation to find out ho w these keys are used.

T ouchpad pointing device T ouchpad Pointing Device The T ouchpad pointing device built into your F ujitsu LifeBook is used to control the mov ement of the pointer to select items on y our display panel. The T ouchpad is composed of a cursor control, two left and right buttons, and a scrolling button.
17 Getting to Know Y our LifeBook DRAGGING Dragging means pressing and holding the left button, while moving the cursor . T o drag , mov e the cursor to the item you wish to mo ve. Pr ess and hold the left button while moving the item to its new location and then release it.

Once y ou hav e connected your A C adapter or charged the internal Lithium ion battery , you can power on your LifeBook notebo ok.

37 User Installable Features Lithium ion Battery Y our LifeBook notebook has a Lithium ion battery that pro vides power for operating your notebook when no external po wer sourc e is available. The batt ery is dur able and long lasting , but should not be ex posed to extreme temperatures, high voltages, chemic als or other haza rds.
38 LifeBook E8000 Notebook Dead Battery Suspend mode sho ws on the Status indi- cator just lik e the nor mal Standby mode. Once y our notebook goes into Dead Battery Suspend mode you will be unable t o resume operation until y ou provide a source of power either fr om an adapter , or a charged battery .

43 User Installable Features INSERTING EXPRESSCARDS There ar e two differe nt width ExpressCards: 34 mm and 54 mm. The connector inside the slot is located on the left-hand side of the slot. If you insert a 34 mm card, be sure to align it with the left side of the slot when inserting it.

45 User Installable Features Figure 4-11. Removing a Memory Upgrade Module CHECKING THE MEMORY CAPACITY Once you ha ve changed the system memor y capacit y by replacing the installed module with a larger one, be sure to check that yo ur notebook has recognized the change.
46 LifeBook E8000 Notebook Device Ports Y our Fujitsu LifeBook notebook and the optional P ort Re plicator come equipped with multiple ports to which you can co nnect external devi ces including: disk driv es, keyboards, modems, printers, etc. MODEM (RJ-11) T ELEPHONE JACK The modem (RJ-11) telephone jack is used for an internal modem.
47 User Installable Features 1. Align the connect or with the port opening. 2. Push the c onnector into the port until it is seated. (Figure 4-14) 3. Tighten the tw o hold-down screws, located on each side of the connector .
48 LifeBook E8000 Notebook MICROPHONE JACK The microphone jack allo ws you to c onnect an external mono microphone. 55 T roubleshooting A card inserted in the PC Card or ExpressCard slot does not work or is locking up the system. (con tinued) The card ma y hav e be en installed while an applicati on was running, so your notebook is not awar e of its installation. Close the application and restart your notebook.
56 LifeBook E8000 Notebook Y our L ifeBook notebo ok turns off all by itself. (con tinued) Y ou are operating on batter y powe r and ignored a low batt- ery alar m until the batteries are at the dead battery state and the system has gone into Dead Battery Suspend mode.
57 T roubleshooting The system po wers up , and displays pow er on informa- tion, but fails to load the operat ing system. The boot sequence setting s of the setup utility are not compatible with your configuration.
58 LifeBook E8000 Notebook The display goes blank b y itsel f after you have been using it. The notebook has gone i nto Video timeout, Standb y mode, Suspend mode or Sa ve-to-Disk mode because you ha ve not used it for a p eriod of tim e. Press an y button on the keyboard, or move the mouse to rest ore operation.
59 T roubleshooting POWER ON SELF T EST MESSAGES The following is an alphabetic list of er ror -and-status messages that Phoenix BIOS and/or your operating system can generate and an explanation of each mess age.
60 LifeBook E8000 Notebook *Parity Check 2 nnnn P arit y error found in the I/O bus. BIOS att empts to locate the address and display it on th e screen. If it cannot locate the address, it displays ????. This is a potentially data-destr oying failur e.
