27 Getting to Know Y our LifeBook REMOVING AND INSTALLING MODULAR DEVICES There ar e three ways to r emove and install modular devices in the Flexible Bay: ■ Cold-swapping: swapping devices while y our notebook is po wered off. ■ W arm-swapping: swapping devices while your notebook is in suspend mode.

51 User Installable Features Lithium Ion Battery Y our Fujitsu Series LifeBook notebook has a Lithium Ion battery that provides power for operating y our notebook when no external po wer source is a vailable. The batter y is durable and long lasting, but should not be exposed to extreme t emperatures, hig h voltages, chemicals or other hazards.
52 LifeBook E Series – Section Four Low Battery State W hen the batter y is running low , y our notebook will beep every 15 seconds and the Battery Level indicator will flash. I f you do not respond t o the low battery alarm, the batteries will continue to discharge until they ar e too low t o operate.

54 LifeBook E Series – Section Four T o prev ent accidental erasure of the data stored on a disk, slide the “wr ite prot ect ” tab until a small hole is exposed. This sets the disk into a pr otect ed state wher e nothing can be added or remo ved.

56 LifeBook E Series – Section Four REMOVING A CD 1. Push and r elease the e ject button on the fr ont of the CD-R OM dr iv e. This will stop the CD and the holder tray will come out of the notebook a short distance. 2. Gently pull the tray out until the CD can easily be remo ved from the tray .

59 User Installable Features Opening the DVD Player Control Panel In most D VD-ROMs, you ha ve the option to alter ho w the movie should play and what y ou w ish to view . Y ou can do this by using the D VD Player c ontrol panel and the mouse. 1. Right-click on the movie screen to open a drop- down menu for options.

61 User Installable Features Hard Disk Drive Y our Fujitsu LifeBook Series notebook hard disk drive capacity is dependent on which model you ar e using . Some notebooks ma y also contain a remo vable hard disk drive in addition t o the internal hard disk drive.

H oweve r , you may encounter simple setup or operating pr oblems that you can solv e on the spot, or pr oblems w ith peripheral devices, that y ou can solve b y replacing the device.

77 T roubleshooting Memory Problems Y our Po wer On screen, or Main menu of the BIOS setup utility infor- mation, does not show the correct amount of installed memor y . Y our memor y upg rade module is not properly installed. R emove and r e-install your memor y upgrade module.

80 LifeBook E Series – Section Five The batteries seem to discharge too quickly . Y ou are running an application that uses a great deal of powe r due to frequent har d drive access or D VD/CD-ROM access, use of a modem card or a LAN PC card.

83 T roubleshooting POWER ON SELF T EST MESSAGES The following is an alphabetic list of error -and-status messages that Phoenix BIOS and/or your operating system can generate and an explanation of each message. Error messages are mark ed w ith an *. The most common errors ar e mark ed with a #.
84 LifeBook E Series – Section Five *Fixed Disk x Failure or Fixed Disk Controller Failure (where x = 1-4) The fix ed disk is not working or not configur ed properly . This may mean that the har d dr iv e ty pe identified in your setup utility does not agree with the t ype detected by the P ower On Self T est.
85 T roubleshooting *Shadow RAM Failed at offset: nnnn Shadow RAM failed at offset nnnn of the 64k block at which the error was detect ed. Y ou are risking data corrup- tion if you c ontin ue. Contact your support representati v e. nnnn Shadow RAM Passed W her e nnnn is the amount of shadow RAM in kilobytes successfully t ested.
