14 Chargin g the Ba ttery Z <Char ging Indic ator and St atuses > CAUTIO N • Unplug the ba ttery charger from th e power ou tlet when it is not in use. • If the terminals of battery are soiled, it may not be possible to charge it. Clean the battery terminals and battery charger terminals with a clean, dry cloth.
15 Getting Ready Load ing th e Batte ry 1 Open the battery cover. CHECK Check that the camera is turned off before opening the battery cover. CAUTIO N • Do not open the battery cover while the camera is on. This could damage the Memory Card or ruin the image files on the Memory Card.
16 Loadin g the Ba ttery 3 Close the battery cover. MEMO If you want to use the camera powered by AC, the AC power adapter, AC-5VX, and DC coupler, CP-50 (both sold separately), are necessary. Refer to the manual provided with the AC-5VX and CP-50 for instructions.
17 Getting Ready Load ing th e Memor y Card Although you can store pictu res i n the came ra’s i nternal memory, you can stor e many more images on the Memory C ard (so ld separ ately). You can u se an xD- Pictur e Car d and S D Memo ry Card with t he Fine Pix F50fd.
18 Load ing the Me mory C ard CAUTIO N Be sure to unlock the protection of the SD Memory Card before inserting it. If it is locked, recording/deleting images, as well as formatting are not available. To unlock the protection, slide the switch back, and the SD Memory Card will work normally.
19 Getting Ready CAUTIO N • When storing Memory Cards, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children. A Memory Card could be swallowed and ca use suffocation. If a child swallows a Memory Card, seek medical attention or call emergency number right away.

21 Getting Ready Setting the language, date, an d time When usin g the camera for the firs t time after pur chasing, the lan guage, da te, and time are cleared . Set the langua ge, date, and tim e. 1 [ ] screen appears when turning the camera on. 2 Set the date and time .

27 Using the Camera 2 Check the composition on the L CD monitor. To adjust zoom scale usin g the Zoom lever: MEMO • S elect e Macro mode to take close-up shots ( ➝ p.61). • U se digital zoom when you want to shoot the subject closer ( ➝ p.112).
28 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) MEMO • The shutter button has a halfway point at which focus and exposure are automatically optimized before taking the picture by pressing fully down. • When pressing the shutter button halfway, a lens operation sound may be heard.
29 Using the Camera Z Indicato r lamp display The indicator lamp ligh ts or blinks when pressing the shutter bu tton, etc. T he indicato r lamp sho ws the ca mera status.
30 Taking Pictures ( B AUTO Mode) CAUTIO N • If the camera is unable to detect faces in an image, it will not correct the red eye-effect sufficiently, or not at all. Also, the camera cannot correct the red-eye effect if the face is in profile. • Correction results may differ depending on the scene.
31 Using the Camera MEMO The both of images with and without the red-eye effect corrected can be recorded when [ SAVE ORG IMAGE] is set under the [ U SET-UP] menu. Subjects not suitable for Intell igent Fa ce Det ection Intelligent Face Detection automatically focuses on a face(s).

56 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode CAUTIO N Aperture By adjusting the aperture, you can change the depth of focus (depth of field). Selecting a larger number o f aperture (closed) obtains a larger depth of focus. Selecting a smaller number of aperture (open) has the area in front of and behind the subject out of focus.
57 Advanced Features — Photography This is an a utomati c mode to set the shutter spe ed. Use this mo de to fre eze a moving subject (fast shut ter sp eed) or convey the impr ession o f movemen t (slow sh utter speed). CHECK Shutter speed setting 1 sec.
