4 Y our device uses a rechargeable 3.7 volt lithium polymer battery of capacity 1000 mAH. Important! The ba ttery is included in your package, but does not come installed in the device. Befor e you can use your devic e, you must install the included ba ttery.
5 Make sure the battery ts snugly into the compartment after it is connected. 5. Replace the battery compartment door and secure it with the screw . 6. Reset your devic e. F or more information about r esetting your device , please see “Resetting Y our Device” on page 12.
6 Recharging the Battery F ollow these instructions to recharge the batt ery. 1. Find the USB cable or A C adapter included with your device . 2. Make sure y our device is turned o . 3. Plug the wide end of the USB cable into a USB port on your PC and the smaller end of the USB cable into the USB port on your device .
7 Battery Precautions • Ifthedeviceisnotusedforalong period of time, the battery may lose its charge. Please r echarge the battery following the steps described above in order t o use your device. • Rechargeablebatteriesareonlyto be charged under adult supervision.
8 Understanding Y our Device Microphone: Speak into the microphone t o record w ords and phrases in the English Course. Navigation Buttons: U se the navigation buttons to mo ve through the menus and screens on your device in the indica ted direction. Play/P ause/Enter K ey: Press this key t o enter on a highlighted it em and select it.
9 Understanding Y our Device W arning! Do not push the top past the point where the keyboard is revealed . The top must remain attached to the bott om. SD Card Slot: Insert SD card here. Slide the SD car d into the slot with the contacts facing the front of the device .
10 V olume Control Buttons: The buttons, located on the left side of the device , control the v olume of the speaker or headphones. Po wer Button: P ush and release the power button to turn on the device. P ush and hold the power button f or 2 or 3 seconds to turn your devic e o .
11 Understanding Y our Device Speaker: The speaker is locat ed on the back of your device . Battery Compartment: The battery compar tment is located on the back of your device and contains a rechar geable 3.7 volt lithium polymer battery . Reset Button: The reset butt on is located on the back of your device , towar ds the bottom left corner .
12 Resetting Y our Device If the keyboard fails to respond, or if the scr een performs erratically , per form a system reset b y following the steps belo w .
13 Ke y Guide Key Guide Main Key s* Goes to the main menu, where you can access all the main features of y our device. Goes directly to the main menu of the English Course/ Englischkurs. Opens the Music Player/MP3- Player . Displays the Word Bank/ W ortdatenbank menu.
14 Key Guide Navigation K ey The round naviga tion pad is located on the top , sliding portion of your device. The separate arro w buttons are located on the keyboard of your device . Press the upper part of the navigation pad or the up button to move the cursor or highlight up .

Set the type of T Vyouareconnectingto ,thetimeand date, erase all y our user data, obtain system information, or check y our battery level. 17 The English Course/Englischkurs contained in your device is an interactive course of study to help y ou learn English. It uses the renowned English language learning content from digital publishing, and uses lif e-like themes to help make learning English fun.

19 T yp es of Ex ercises There are six basic types of ex ercises that you will nd in the English Course/ Englischkurs: photo story, pick and place, scrambled sent ence, multiple choice, ll in the blanks , and picture choice. Note : P hoto story exercises do not keep a score or hav e answers.
20 Press B ACK t o exit the photo story and return to the English Course/ Englischkurs menu. 4. When you r each the nal phrase (or at any time during the st ory), press OPTIONS. The initial options menu is displayed . Press or to highlight the icon you want and then pr ess ENTER .

22 Looking Up a W ord ✓ When you press OPTIONS during an exer cise, you might see . This means you can look up any English word used in the ex ercise. 1. Press or to highlight and then press ENTER. 2. Use the arro w key s to highlight the word y ou want.
23 V iewing Y our Score ✓ After you select to submit your answers, a scr een appears displaying your score f or the exercise, including your status and the time it took you to complet e the exercise . Y our status is green if y ou score 80% or higher , yellow if you scor e between 50 and 80% and red if you scor e less than 50%.
24 Multiple Choice “Multiple Choice ” exercises sho w a question and a list of possible answers. Y our goal is to select the correct response to the questions. 1. Open a “multiple choice ” exercise . Y ou may see Tim and a brief screen of instructions.
25 Picture Choice “Picture Choice ” exercises r equire y ou to match a picture from the list in the bottom half of the screen to the description of the highlighted box in the top half . 1. Open a “picture choice” ex ercise . Y ou may see Tim and a brief screen of instructions.
26 5. Press ENTER to begin. Press B ACK t o exit and return to the menu. Playing Memorization In Memorization , an English word is displayed on the scr een. Y our goal is to guess its German translation. is highlighted. P ress ENTER to t oggle to the German translation and see if you remembered corr ectly .
27 Playing Dictation In Dictation , an English word is pronounced. Y our goal is to type it. T ype your guess. T o type a capital letter , hold and press the letter . Press to delete the letter to the left of the cursor . Press or to move the cursor .
28 Y ou can take the test for any major section you like, but you will not be able to jump around within a section. For example , in the vocabulary sec tion of the test, there are 6 parts. In order to take part 2, par t 1 must be satisfactorily completed.
29 Note: In the menu, your scor e is displayed next to any c ompleted part of the test. Y our status is green if you score 80% or higher , yellow if you score between 50 and 80% and red if you scor e less than 50%. 8. Press ENTER to c ontinue the test .
30 Use the pronunciation trainer in y our device to review rules of English pronunciation. Y ou can study and review sounds used in the English language, dier ences between English and German sounds, and tricky English spellings.
31 Options ✓ Y ou have several options while in the Pronuncia tion Trainer/A ussprache. Y ou can change the voice, the dialect of pronunciations, and ho w the words ar e ordered . 1. Fr om anywhere within the Pronunciation T rainer/ Aussprache , press OPTIONS.
32 Practicing Pr onunciations While viewing a word’ s translation in the English Course/Englischkurs, you can practice pronouncing it by recor ding a pronunciation and comparing it to the recor ding in the device. 1. Fr om a translation screen, pr ess to highlight and then press ENTER.
33 Using the Dictionar y/W örterbuch The Oxford Adv anced Learners Dictionar y , 7th Edition (OALD) , provides denitions , usage examples, synonyms, an tonyms , and additional content f or thousands of words and phrases designed to help you bett er understand the English language.
34 Notice when a cross-ref erence to “ Advance” appears on the screen, highlighted in red . 4. Press ENTER. The dictionar y entry for “advance ” is displayed . 5. Press BA CK to return to the previous entry . Or press CLEAR to return t o the word sear ch screen.

37 4. Highlight the MP3 you wan t to hear . Press or to scroll down or up one le name at a time. Press or to scroll down or up one screen at a time. 5. Press ENTER to begin pla ying the le . Press ENTER t o pause a playing le. P ress ENTER again to resume playing the le.
38 3. Press or to cycle through the available settings . When deleting a le, highlight Delete/Löschen and pr ess ENTER . Y ou are asked to conrm the deletion. No/Nein is highlighted. Press ENTER t o cancel the deletion. Press to highlight Y es/ Ja and press ENTER to delete the le.
39 OALD W ord List/OALD-W or tliste is a list of up to 500 words from the Oxford Adv anced Learner’ s Dictionar y that you hav e saved f or further study or review. Impor t Dictionaries/Impor tier te W örterbücher lists any .csv formatted personal dictionaries you have imported to your device via a PC connection.

Note : If you selected Impor t Dictionaries/Impor tier te W örterbücher , press or to select the imported dic tionary you want and press ENTER .
43 V iewing Entries 1. Fr om the W ord Bank/ W or tdatenbank menu, press or to highlight My Dictionar y/Mein W ör terbuch or Impor t Dic tionaries/ Impor tierte Wörterbücher , and press ENTER. Note : If you selected Impor t Dictionaries/Impor tier te W örterbücher , press or to select the imported dic tionary you want and press ENTER .
44 5. Press ENTER. If you selected to delete the entry, it is automatically deleted and you return to the list of entries. If you selected to edit the entry, you go to the entry screen. Edit the entry exac tly the way you ent ered it and press ENTER when done.
45 Y our device also includes three word games to help you expand y our English vocabulary - Jumble , Word T rain , and Hangman . Selec ting a Game Press HOME t o go to the main menu. Press or to c ycle through the options until W ord Games/W ortspiele appears highlighted in the middle of the screen.
46 Exit leaves the game and r eturns to the W ord Games/Wortspiele menu. Press or to highlight Y es and press ENTER to leav e the game. Highlight No and press ENTER to return to the Jumble menu. 3. Form a w ord by typing the letters on the screen. As soon as you complet e typing the correct word , points are awar ded and you move t o the next word.
47 Quit ends the game. Pr ess ENTER to return to the Jumble menu or press and then press ENTER to return t o the current game. Shue shues all unguessed letters into a new order . Points are deducted for shuing the letters. The amount deducted is determined by the skill level.
48 Help displays instructions for the game. Exit leaves the game and r eturns to the W ord Games/Wortspiele menu. Press or to highlight Y es and press ENTER to leav e the game. Highlight No and press ENTER to return to the Word Train menu . 3. T ype letters to try and form a word .
49 Quit ends the game. Pr ess ENTER to return to the Wor d Tr ain menu or press and then press ENTER to return to the current game . Hint displays all possible letters y ou can type to continue the word . Y ou are only permitted one hint per round. Changing the Skill Lev el ✓ Y ou can change the sk ill level at the Options menu.
50 Note: The letters of the m ystery word are hidden. The number of guesses remaining is display ed as a red number on the screen. P oints are aw arded f or e a c h c or r ect ly g ue ss e d l e t t er a n d subtracted for each wrong guess . 4. Continue pla ying until y ou get a word wr ong.
51 Using the Reading Timer Y our device includes a reading timer which enables you to time your r eading and keep a log of the books you read . 1. Press HOME. 2. Press or to cycle through the options until Reading T imer/Lese- Timer appears highlighted in the middle of the screen.
52 Y ou can also check your progress at any time , to see how long you have been r eading. Simply press the power switch t o turn the device on. The timer reappears and display s your progr ess. Contin ue/F ortfahren is highlighted. P ress ENTER to select it.
53 Or you can select it from the Reading Timer/Lese- Timer menu. 2. Press or to view the reading log. Note: The nal page of the log is a summary screen. Once you see the summary screen, you cannot return to list of log entries. 3. T o see the summar y screen, press from the last page of entries, or press ENTER at an y time.
54 Selecting Y our T V System ✓ The Settings menu of your device contains an option to select which type of colour encoding system is used where you liv e. Y ou can selec t P AL or NTSC . P AL is the type of colour encoding generally found acr oss Europe and NTSC is generally f ound in North America.
55 5. Press or to cycle through the options until Extra Content/ Zusatzinhalte appears highlighted in the middle of the screen. 6. Press ENTER. 7. Press to highlight Connect to PC/ Mit PC verbinden and then press ENTER. 8. Connect/Verbinden is highligh ted.
56 3. Double -click the “MUSIC” folder . 4. Navigate on y our PC to where you store MP3 les on y our PC. 5. Right-click an MP3 le you want to copy to y our device and then click “ Copy” from the pop-up menu. 6. Right-click in the “MUSIC” folder window and then click “Paste ” from the pop-up menu.
57 4. Navigate on y our PC to where you store .csv les on y our PC. Or you can creat e a custom dictionar y using a spreadsheet or database application. Note : C ustom dictionaries should be created with the following structure: word-1 denition for wor d-1 word-2 denition for wor d-2 .

However , if you have inserted an SD card into your device , you may be asked whether to save the download t o the device ’ s internal memory or to the SD card.
