INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing the F ocus Enhancements FireStore FS-3 DTE D V V ideo Disk Recorder for full-size D V camcorders. FS-3 adds a digital disk recorder/pla yer to y our camorder for a po werful acquisition combination. This User Guide is to be used with softw are version 1.
based “edit-ready” f ile for mats such as Ra w D V , A VI T ype 1, A VI T ype 2, Matrox A VI, Canopus A VI, QuickT ime and A vid D V -OMF . This means clips are immediatel y a vailab le to your NLE system without f irst having to transfer or con ver t the clips.
MOUNTING T O A CAMCORDER The FireStore FS-3 is designed to mount directl y to full size D V camcorders. FireStore FS-3 features either Anton/Bauer , V -Mount, P A G Lock or NP mount plates allo wing quick connection to most camcorders featuring these battery systems.
3) FS-3 features a tw o wire connector with black and red cab les that connects main po wer betw een the FS-3 and the camcorder . Connect this to the equi valent connector on the rear of your camcorder .
P AGE 1 INSERTING AND REMOVING FIRESTORE FSHDD-1 FIREWIRE DRIVES The best w a y to get to kno w the FireStore FSHDD-1 FireW ire HDD is b y studying the supplied manual. The manual pro vides detailed instructions and illustrations. INSER TING THE HDD : Inser t the driv e into the slot on top of the FS-3 unit.
K eys and pro vide the function displa yed on the bottom of the LCD . The front panel also features a tall y light, infrared remote sensor and po wer s witch. 1. T ally Light The FS-3 red tall y light is located at the top of the FS-3 front panel. In general, this light will flash when FS-3 is in REC/P A USE mode and be solid when in RECORD mode.
P AGE 1 7. Ke ypad Standard K eys The bottom tw o rows of k eys on the FS-3 ke ypad ha ve dedicated functions such as fast forw ard/back search, pla y , record , and index forw ard back. Each key (e xcept record) also has a SHIFT mode which allo ws a secondary function to be performed.
4. V olume Number The volume or disk number of the current clip recording or pla yback session is displa yed in this area of the LCD . F or example, a displa y v alue of “2-014” identif ies a track as being on volume 2. 5. T rack or Clip Number This area displa ys the cur rent clip or track number being recorded or pla yed back.
P AGE 1 FR ONT P ANEL BUTT ONS The FS-3 front panel features nine buttons. The three buttons on the top ro w are “Soft K eys” which allo w dif ferent functions to be controlled depending on the mode FS-3 is in. Use the bottom line of the LCD displa y to identify the cur rent soft key function.

P AGE 1 When FS-3 is in PLA Y or P A USE mode and the user presses and holds the SHIFT ke y plus the forw ard or backward inde x keys, it is possible to forw ard one frame or backward one frame with each press. If in PLA Y mode, FS-3 will immediatel y go into P A USE mode on the particular frame.
4. Select Pressing SEL will select the cur rent menu item. If a sub-menu is a v ailable, that will open. If a sub-menu is not a v ailable, this command simpl y enables or selects the menu item. 5. Scr oll Arr o w This command allo ws for scrolling through menu items.
P AGE 1 FS-3 creates 9 minute, 13 second clips (2GB clips on disk). The characteristics of RETR O DISK remains the same. The larger f ile size pre vents FS-3 reaching its 999 track limitation for very long RETR O records.

F older List When this setting is selected , it is possible to pla y back clips onl y from a selected folder . Select a particular folder to play clips from. Highlighted folder is the selected folder after exit. Once set and w hen PLA Y is pressed , only clips within that particular folder will playback.
The FS-3 buttons (other than MENU , DISP and SHFT) are locked out w hen in this mode, as is wired or infrared remote control units. If in VTR mode on the camcorder , all keys w ork.
User simpl y selects the for mat. Highlighted format is cur rent for mat after exit. Pressing EXIT will exit back to the menu screen. Selected format will stay set until user selects a dif ferent for mat (ev en if the po wer is c ycled). SETUP MENU The SETUP MENU allo ws v arious functions of FS-3 to be set.
Scroll from v alue to value using the FOR W ARD and B A CK INDEX Buttons. Press DO WN and UP ar row to scroll though digits in v alue. Pressing EXIT will exit back to the menu screen. User simpl y selects the Menu Item. Pressing SEL will open the sub menu.
7) When prompted “DO Y OU W ANT T O UPGRADE SYSTEM SOFTW ARE?” answ er YES and YES to the w ar ning messages. W ARNING: Upgrade will erase cur rent OS!! 8) After upg rade is complete, po w er cycle FS-3. The new softw are should no w be loaded and ready to use.
REGEN Mode - After a disk is mounted (at startup, upon manual connect) and after the track list has been constructed , FS-3 looks at the last track and looks at the timecode number of the last frame in that track. FS-3 stores that number for use as the TC value (+ 1) for the f irst frame of the next recording.
Infrar ed Sensor Settings This menu allo ws the user to EN ABLE or DISABLE the IR sensor on FS-3. User simpl y selects the Menu Item. Highlighted mode is cur rent mode after exit. Pressing EXIT will exit back to the menu screen. GPI Settings This menu allo ws the user to change the setting of the GPI por t.

Org anize F olders Places all f iles that w ere identif ied as a KEEPER or w ere SCENE MARKED during recording into a folder marked KEEPER or the prenamed SCENE MARKING folders on the disk dri ve. These folders can be impor ted directl y into most D V NLE bins.

Repair Disk REP AIR allo ws the user to select either CHECK DISK or CURRENT CLIP . CHECK DISK scans the entire volume for an y er rors (usually , if a disk w as cor r upted during a recording due to sudden po wer loss, check disk will aler t the user of this).

Mounting Fir eWir e Disk Driv es to Windo ws XP , 2000, 98SE and ME Computer Systems On a W indo ws based computer system, simply double click the My Computer icon on the top left hand corner of the desktop. Y ou will see the follo wing window: Locate y our F ireWire disk dri ve.
Using Fir eStor e FS-3 r ecorded A vid OMF clips on A vid NLE Systems The A vid D V OMF f ile for mat was de veloped for use with A vid Xpress D V version 3.0 or latter on W indo ws 2000, W indo ws XP or Mac 0S10. FireStore OMF clips are also compatib le with certain NewsCutter , Xpress Pro and Media Composer systems.
