2 INST ALLA TION WHERE TO INST ALL THIS ALARM Minimum coverage for Smoke Alarms , as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFP A), is one Smoke Alarm on every floor , in every sleeping area, and in every bedroom (See “Regulatory Information For Smoke Alarms” for details on the NFP A recommendations).
BEFORE YOU BEGIN INST ALLA TION This unit is designed to be mounted on any standard wiring junction b ox up to a 4-inch (10 cm) size, on either the ceiling or wall. Read “ Where to Install This Alarm” and “Where This Alarm Should Not Be Installed ” before you begin installation.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERCONNECTED ALARMS • F ailure to meet any of the above requir ements could damage the units and cause them to malfunction, removing your p rotection. • AC and AC/DC Smoke/CO Alarms can be interconnected. U nder AC power , all units will alarm when one senses smoke or CO.
T he optional locking features are designed to discourage unauthorized removal of the battery or alarm. It is not necessary to activate the locks i n single-family households where unauthorized battery or alarm r emoval is not a concern.

7 WEEKL Y TESTING • NEVER use an open flame of any kind to test this unit. Y ou m ight accidentally damage or set fire to the unit or to your h ome. The built-in test switch accurately tests the unit’ s o peration as required by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
8 POTENTIAL SOURCES OF CO IN THE HOME Fuel-burning appliances like: portable heater , gas or wood bur ning fireplace, gas kitchen range or cooktop, gas clothes dryer . Damaged or insufficient venting: corroded or disconnected water heater vent pipe, leaking chimney pipe or flue, or cracked heat exchanger , blocked or clogged chimney opening.
