The printer is delivered in two boxes containing the main unit (including acces- sories) and the stand. First, open the stand carton. Open the stand carton and take out the stand parts. • After opening the cartons, quickly move the packaging materi- als (cartons, vinyl bags, foam styrene, etc.
Step 1 With the welded parts of the stand leg (left and right) that fasten the cross bar facing out, align the attaching holes of the cross bar and fasten them tem- porarily with hexagonal socket head bolts (long). After the hexagonal socket head bolts have been re-tightened, fit the plastic covers over them.
The printer carton contains the main unit, scroller , and a box of accessories. The warranty document and customer registration postcard are attached to the carton itself. Store the warranty document securely , fill in the details on the customer registration and and mail it.
• For safety , at least four people are needed for assembling the printer . • When taking the main unit out of the carton, remove the vinyl first and handle the printer directly . There is a risk of your hands slipping if the main unit is handled with the vinyl on.
Step 3 Place the main unit on the stand with the front towards the locking castors on the stand. Step 4 Fasten the main unit to the stand using hexagonal socket head bolts (short) through the holes on both sides of the stand. Step 5 Peel off the white tapes holding the cover and waste liquid box.
Step 7 Remove cable fastening materials A and B between the rail and cover . Remove the lever fastening material that holds the lever . Step 8 Thread the tray hook, sheet, tray hook in that order over the media ejection basket shaft and replace the cap.
• When it is not in use, the media eject tray can be folded up as shown in the diagram. Step 9 When the assembly of the main unit is completed, move the printer to the place where it is to be used and set it up on a firm floor .
Printer accessories are contained in the accessories carton in the bottom of the printer carton. Open the accessories carton and check that nothing is missing. • If any packaged item is missing, contact your local MUTOH dealer . Power Cable 1 pce. Cable Clamp 1 pce.

If you have not arranged for them beforehand, please obtain them separately by referring to the “List of Optional Items and Supply Items” on page 106.
• Use a power supply that is separate from devices that produce electrical noise. • Don't have multiple connections on the power cord. These will cause heating and fire. T ake power directly from a household power outlet. • An earth lead must be used.
• Although there is no question about the safety of the ink, it should not be touched, licked or swallowed. If you accidentally touch the ink, wash it off immediately with soap and water . If it should get into your eye, wash with plenty of water and consult your doctor .
• Ink cartridges should be kept in a cool dark place. However , the ink will freeze if it is stored for a long period below -10˚C for black ink and below -10˚C for colored ink so storage under these conditions should be avoided. If the ink becomes frozen, it should be thawed for at least three hours at room tempera- ture (25˚C) before use.
Step 1 With the hold lever down, turn on the power switch at the bottom right of the printer . Step 2 The printer is initalized and, because no ink cartridges are loaded, the follow- ing display appears. • Initialization will not occur if the cover is open or the hold lever is up.
• Power must not be switched off during the ink filling operation otherwise the printer may be damaged. • If the "Cartridge None" display on the Control panel does not disappear even though ink cartridges have been installed, it means that the ink cartridges have not been loaded correctly .
Here we select whether the media to be loaded in the RJ-6000 Series printer will be standard media or thin media. • If you are unable to judge whether the media to be used is standard media or thin media, you should do the "Media Feed" as shown on page 67 before printing.
• Don't use media that is creased, blemished, torn or curled. • Problems caused by using media other than that specified by Mutoh will not be covered by warranty .
Loading Cut Media Step 1 Open the cover , check that head is in a position where it will not touch the media keeper blade and put the hold lever up. Step 2 Selecting media Press the [MEDIA] key on the Control panel to light the Sheet media LED. Step 3 Loading media Insert seasoned media between the pressure roller and the drive roller .
Step 5 Put the hold lever down. • Remove the roll media and scroller from the main unit before using. • Don't load the media slantwise. The media size may be misidentified and the printing will not be normal.
• Don't put the hold lever up while the head is moving (during printing, media detection, media cutting, cleaning, etc.) • When putting the hold lever up to load media, etc., make sure the head is in the stand-by position (maintenance position).
Loading Roll Media Step 1 Open the cover , check that head is in a position where it will not touch the media keeper blade and put the hold lever up. Step 2 Selecting media type Press the [MEDIA] key on the Control panel to light the Roll media LED. Step 3 T ake out a roll of media.
• Roll media generally comes with externally wound specifica- tions in which the front surface of the media is on the outside, or internally wound specifications in which the front surface of the media is on the inside. Roll media specified by Mutoh is wound to external specifications in order to give effect to the printing.
• When inserting roll media from the rear , be careful not to be injured by the pressure unit. Step 8 Checking the position of the roll media T urn the scroller by hand and wind up several turns of roll media. As you wind up the media, check the relative positions of the drive roller on the right and the right hand edge of the roll media.
* If the roll media must be moved to the left T urn the scroller adjusting screw at the rear left side of the printer to the right • The guide line (holes) is a guide There is a possibility of a media jam if the pressure roller is not holding the left edge of the media and the pressure roller is near the right edge.
Step 10 If the right edge of the roll media is near the guide line (holes), put the hold lever down. At this time, check and bear in mind where the edge of the roll media is in relation to the guide line. Close the cover . The head will move automatically to detect the size of the media.
Step 3 While pressing the roll, pull the fixed flange end of the scroller sharply several times then remove the movable flange and take off the roll. • Don't put the hold lever up while the head is moving (during printing, media detection, media cutting, cleaning, etc.
Make a test print to verify that the printer is working properly . Step 1 Open the cover and check that the hold lever is up. Step 2 Press the [MEDIA] key to light the Sheet media LED. (Cut media is selected) Step 3 Load an A3 size sheet of cut media and put the hold lever down.
• Make sure the power to the printer and to the computer is switched off when you connect the printer and computer . • For optimum output, please use a cable recommended by Mutoh.
First, prepare the printer to receive data from the computer . The conditions for connecting the printer and computer must be aligned beforehand on the print- er side and on the computer side. This is called set-up. The basic printer set-up for receiving data from a computer involves the fol- lowing four types of settings.
• If values other than those set at the time of shipping from Mutoh are used, be sure to refer to "Centronics Settings" or "Network Settings" in the separate Functions Edition of the User Guide. Command Set-up (User Settings) Each user will specify the online commands from the computer and the com- mand conditions.
A printer driver serves as a bridge (a software connection) for sending data from a computer to a printer . By installing a printer driver , the computer can know for the first time the printer to which it is connected. Here we explain only the case of using Windows 95/98 as a standard comput- er .
Installation Procedure Step 1 Starting the computer Make sure the printer and computer are connected and switch on the power to the printer . Then switch on the computer . Step 2 Installing the driver Make sure that computer starts normally then insert the CD-ROM labeled "MUTOH PRINTER SOFTW ARE" in the CD-ROM drive of the computer .
Step 5 In response to "Click the manufacturer and model of your printer", click [Have Disk...]. Step 6 In the "Copy manufacturer's files from" space, enter the CD-ROM name and specify folder (in this case "ENGLISH RJ-6000") and click [OK].
Step 8 Under "Click the port you want to use with this printer", select the port to which the printer is actually connected and click [Next >]. Step 9 After specifying "Printer name" and "Do you want your Windows-based pro- grams to use this printer as the default printer?" click [Next >].
Since the computer recognizes the printer when the printer driver is selected, try online printing. Step 1 Make sure that the computer and printer have the same communication condi- tions. (Refer to "Command Setting, Function Settings, Centronics Settings, Network Settings and Utilities Settings" in the Functions Edition.
In online printing was possible, try printing the Setup List. Step 1 Open the cover and make the hold lever is up. Step 2 Press the [MEDIA] key and light the Sheet media LED.
• Cloth must be cut manually (refer to "Function Settings: Media Cut" of the Functions Edition.) This function is used for manually cutting roll media (such as cloth) that can not be cut automatically after it has been printed.

In this section we explain about direct access key operations that are often used to enable printer functions to be used effectively . Specifying the Media to be used P AGE 60 Specifying the Resolutio.
Here we select whether we will use roll media or cut media as the media to be loaded in the RJ-6000 Series printer . Immediately before loading media in the printer , press the [MEDIA] key . If roll media is to be specified, light the Roll media LED. If cut media is to be speci- fied, light the Sheet media LED.
The resolution of the RJ-6000 Series at the time of output can be selected as 360 dpi, 720 dpi or simulated 1440 dpi (RTL-P ASS). 720 dpi or simulated 1440 dpi gives high grade printing at near photo quality . Specify resolution at the time of graphic data output.
According to the printing environment to be used, three speeds can be speci- fied for a RJ-6000 Series printer . In changing them, you should consider the resolution and printing time required for the printing. By changing the printing mode, printing may be high quality , normal or high speed.
Head cleaning is a function that cleans the head face and nozzles. Head cleaning should be carried out if the printing is more faint or lacking in detail compared with the previous printing. • When printing for a long period under dusty conditions, dust collects in the maintenance section and inspection and mainte- nance may be required.
• When a new roll of media is mounted, the leading edge of the media may not be straight. In this case, the leading edge of the media should be cut. The [CANCEL] key can be switched between the cancel function and the media cut function, depending to the status of the printer .
Palette printing is used when pen colors are specified with the printer's inter- nal data. Output the color palette for reference and for comparison and selection of line color output from your CAD system. Step 1 Load an A3 size sheet of media and put the hold lever down.
These are prints of the current status of the printer . Check by printing out the following two types of print. T est print: This checks whether the printer is fully operational by making a print. Setup List print: This prints out details such as printer online settings.
If roll media is being used, the media will be fed in the normal direction while the [Shift] key and [Media Feed] key are pressed. Roll media will not be fed while data is being received or processed. Media is not fed while cut media is in use. Step 1 The media feed function can be used only when roll media is loaded and data is not being received.
Although your printer was adjusted for optimum quality at the time of ship- ment, the printing quality may vary according to the type of media. In such cases, a accracy adjustment plot of printing quality can be made with the fol- lowing procedure.
Step 3 Look at pattern A on your print. Use the [V ALUE +] and [V ALUE -] keys to enter the number of a line with no offset. Step 4 Press [ENTER] key to confirm the value specified for pattern A. Step 5 Look at pattern B on your print. Use the [V ALUE +] and [V ALUE -] keys to enter the number of a line with no offset.
• The accuracy adjustment adjusts the color head reciprocal printing position and the black head reciprocal printing posi- tion as well as aligning the prointing position between the color head and the black head.

This section gives details of maintenance that should be done every day (cleaning, ink cartridge replacement, etc.) as well as examples of troubles that might occur and how handle them.
Wipe the printer with a soft cloth. • T urn off the power switch when cleaning the printer . • Don't use thinners or benzene, as these will damage the paint. • When cleaning, don't open any covers that are fastened by screws as these contain electrical parts.
• Dust and scraps of paper tend to accumulate over time on the platen and cutter groove. This leads to poor quality printing and cutting. Use a soft damp cloth to wipe away any paper scraps clinging to the pressure roller . Clean the drive roller with a nylon brush.
• Progressive soiling affects the sensitivity of the sensors and may cause media to be detected even when no media is loaded. 78 RJ-6000 Series USER GUIDE Basic Edition Cleaning the Printer IMPORT A.
If the RJ-6000 is displaying "No ink" or "No cartridge", the ink cartridge should be replaced or inserted without delay . If "Ink low" is displayed, have a replace- ment cartridge ready .
A washing set that is separately sold is required in order to change the type of inks used in the RJ-6000. Ink switching involves switching light cyan and light magenta for orange and green pigment inks or interchanging pigment inks and dye inks. Step 1 Remove the currently loaded ink cartridges from the back and insert the wash- ing set.
Step 5 After ink filling, ink switching is com- plete. • Ink switching produces a large quantity of waste liquid. Have an absorbent sheet (waste ink tank) ready and dispose of waste fluid in accordance with the "Utility Settings: Head W ash" item of the Functions Edition of the User Guide.
Depending on the type of roll media used, paper dust accumulating on the cut- ter groove and cutter tip may lead to poor cutting. In this case, the cutter tip should be cleaned or replaced and the cutter groove should be cleaned. The cutter is a consumable item.
Step 3 Insert a new cutter blade in the hole in the head. Press down on the cutter while you return the cutter arm over the cutter . The cutter will only fit in one direction. • The cutter blade is very brittle. Be careful not to bump it or drop it.
W aste ink accumulates in the waste box at the back of the printer . When the waste box is full, "Full W aste Ink T ank" is displayed and printer's printing oper- ation ceases. The waste liquid absorbent sheet/waste liquid box must be replaced.
Step 1 With no printing or cleaning being car- ried out, pull out the waste liquid box at the back. The alarm will ring and the display will change to “No waste-Ink T ank”. Step 2 Without tilting the waste liquid box that you have removed, place it inside a thick vinyl bag then tip out the absorbent material.
Step 3 Place the replacement waste liquid absorbent sheet in the waste liquid box with the hole towards the handle of the box. Step 4 Install the waste liquid box containing the new waste liquid absorbent sheet in the printer . Step 5 The alarm will ring and "Change T ank? No" is displayed.
When printing A0 size or larger widths, very small amounts of ink will be eject- ed on the left edge for stable printing quality . The waste ink ejected on the left side in that way is collected in a translucent bottle under the main unit (the waste ink bottle).
• The used waste liquid absorbent sheet should be disposed of as non-combustible material in accordance with your local civic regulations. • It would dangerous for children to lick or swallow the absorbent sheet filled with waste liquid, so dispose of it promptly or put it out of reach.
When the head is cleaned and the type of ink is changed frequently , waste matter clinging to the cleaning wiper may cause the printing to become faint or blemished. In such cases, you should clean the cleaning wiper . Step 1 Switch off the power , lower the hold lever and bring the head to the middle.
Step 3 Return the head to its former position at the right hand end of the printer . • The head may be damaged by drying ink, etc. if it is not returned to the right hand end of the printer .
