11 Viewing Your Electronic Printer Manual Your printer software CD-ROM includes an e lectronic Reference Guide for your printer. The manual is in HTML format, so you need a browser—such as Internet Explorer 3.0 or later or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later—to view it .
12 3. Click View Elect ronic Documentation . The main screen for your prin ter a ppears: 4. You can eith er view th e manual from the CD-ROM ( View Reference Guide ) or copy the manual to your hard drive ( Install Reference Guide ) and view it from there.

15 Printing from Start to Finish Here’s what to do to print a basic document —such as a photograph, newsletter, or memo—from loadin g the pa per to select ing pri nt setti ngs to contro lling the pri nt job.
16 Keep the following in mi nd when loading paper: ■ Load the printabl e side face up. It’s usually whiter or brig hter than the o ther side. ■ Load lett erhead o r prepri nted pape r into the printer top e dge first . ■ Don’t load pap er above the arrow on the left edge guide.
17 Selecting Printer Software Settings Once you click Propert ies , you see your printer software Propertie s dialog box. The most im portan t thing to remember is to select the type o f paper you’re us ing.

19 Controlling Printin g At the Print dialog box, click OK (or maybe Print ) to sta rt printing. After a m oment , the Progres s Meter ap pears and sho ws the progress of your p rint j ob. You can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or restart printing.
20 Printing on a Macintosh This section describes the basic steps for printing on a Macintosh. (To print wi th Windows, see page 15.) Loading Pap er Make sure yo ur printer and computer are turned on. Place your pa per agai nst the ri ght edge gu ide and s lide th e left ed ge guide a gains t the pape r.
21 Opening the Printer Software After you op en your appl ication pro gram and create your documen t, you’re ready to select your pa ge setup a nd other printe r software settin gs.
22 Selecting Printer Software Settings Now op en the File menu and cl ick Print . Yo u see the ma in p rinter set tings dialog bo x for your appli cation (your dialog b ox may look slightly di fferent): The most im portan t thing to remember is to select the type o f paper you’re us ing.
23 Controlling Printin g Once you’ve clicked Print , yo ur document begins printing. If you turned on background printing i n the Chooser, you can select EPSON Monitor3 from the A pplication menu at th e right si de of the me nu bar to check t he progre ss of your print job.
24 Using PhotoEnh ance, Custom, and Advanced Settings When you’ re printing special p rojects, yo u can customi ze your printer s oftware settings, as described in these sections: ■ “Using Photo.

28 EPSON Ph oto Pape r You can use E PSON Pho to Paper to p rint photo g raphs th at look almo st as go od as the ones yo u get from film proces sing. Photo Paper is availabl e in a variety o f sizes, in sheets or on a roll.

30 Envelopes You can load up to 10 envelopes at a tim e, flap edge fi rst and printa ble side up. Place the m ag ainst the ri ght edg e guide a nd slide the le ft edge g uide agains t them . 31 Taking Care of Your Photographs For optimum image qua lity and lo nger print l ife, print your photos with EPSON Photo Ink (the standard ink for the EPSON Stylus Photo 870 and EPSON St ylus Photo 1270 printers) and EPSON’s fade-resistant Matte Paper - Heavy weight and Premium Glo ssy Photo Pa per.
32 Selecting Your Paper Type Your printer a utoma tically ad justs itse lf for the type of paper you select in your printer software. That’s why the Me dia Type setting is so im portan t. It tel ls your printe r what kind of pape r you’re using an d adjusts th e ink coverage accordingly.
33 Using Roll Paper EPSON ro ll paper com es in two t ypes and sizes : ■ EPSON Photo Paper, 13 inches wide × 32.8 feet long For printin g photog raphic banners , panoram as, and signs up t o 44 inche s long (designed for the EPSON Stylus Pho to 1270) ■ EPSON Premium Glossy Photo Paper, 4 inches wide × 26.
34 2. Roll the edge o f the paper backward to uncurl it . Use a folded sheet of pape r or the pla stic sheet included wi th the roll paper holde r to prevent yo ur hands from marring the prin table surface . 3. Remo ve the prin ter’s pa per s upport a nd ins tall t he roll paper h olde r in the same mount ing slot s.
35 5. Load the e nd of the p aper into t he printer a s far as it wil l go, then slide the left edge guide against the paper. 6. Gently ho ld the paper in place on the top as you press and releas e the E lo ad/eject button to fe ed the pa per into th e printer.
36 Printing on Roll Paper When you use ro ll paper, you can prin t your favorite 4 × 6 snapshots, panoramics, and banners with no side margins (“bleed” y our images to the edges), with small side margins, with pag e frames between im ages, or a combination of these .

50 Macintosh Instructions 1. Start P hotoshop. O pen the Adobe Photos hop 5.0 LE folder an d double-cl ick the Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE ico n. You see th e Photosho p main scre en. 2. Select the pi cture you want to print, modify it as necessary, and size it to 4 × 6 inches.
51 5. Click the Se tup button . You se e the Pri nt dialog box. 6. Click the Proper ties button . You see yo ur printer set tings dia log box. 7. Click the Main tab, if necessary. Select Photo Paper as the Media Type s etting. Also make s ure the PhotoE nhance s etting i s turne d off .
52 10. Click OK . You return to th e Page Setup dia log box. 11. Click OK again. You return to the Print di alog box. 12. Click OK . Your banner prints with 0.12-inch (3 mm) margins on each side. Follow th e steps on page 56 to remov e and s tore you r banner .
53 5. Sele ct these set tings: ■ Roll Pape r as the Paper Source; this leaves a margin of at least 0.12-inch (3 mm) on both sides of your printout ■ Banner as the Rol l Paper Opti on ■ Click the Cus tomize button and enter the size of your panoramic or banner, name the siz e, and click OK .
54 Printing on Paper Cut From a Roll If you’ll be printing o n paper cut from a roll wit hout using t he roll pa per holder, follow the step s below. 1. Before loadi ng the pa per, cut it to the desired le ngth of yo ur image plus two inches for the necessary margins.
55 6. Select Photo Pa per (for 13-inch wide paper) or Premium Glo ssy Photo Paper (for 4-inch wide pape r) as th e Media Type s etting. 7. Select Auto Sheet Feeder as the Pape r Source sett ing. 8. Windows : Select User Defined as the Pape r Size setting , then i nput th e size of your cut paper.
56 Removing and Storing Roll Paper When you finish a print jo b on roll paper, yo u can position the pa per for anot her roll paper print j ob or remove it fro m the pri nter. Follow these step s: 1. Press the E load/eject butt on. The print er prin ts a smal l lin e on the roll p aper to show you where to cut it an d feeds the paper forward.
57 Maintaining Your Printer This sect ion describe s main tenance procedures to keep yo ur print er working at its be st and prepar ation s teps for mo ving your prin ter.
58 Using the Head Clean ing Utility Follow th ese steps to run th e Head Cle aning uti lity (recomme nded meth od): 1. Make sure th e printer is turne d on but not printi ng, and bot h the B black and A color ink out lights are off. (If an ink out li ght is flashing, replace t he ink cartridge instead.
59 7. If the no zzle check pa ttern has n o gaps in it s dots, cli ck Finish . If the patte rn is mis sing dots, cli ck Clean to clean t h e prin t head again. If y o u don’t s ee any im provemen t after cl eaning three or fo ur time s, chec k the so lutions in “Problems Getting Good Print Quality” on page 73.
60 Or, with Windows, cli ck Start , point to Settings , then sele ct Printers . Right-cl ick your EPSON Stylus Photo printer icon in the Printers window. Then select Properti es ( Document Defaults in Windo ws NT). 5. Windows : Click th e Utility tab.
61 Replacing an Ink Cartridge When th e B black or A color ink out li ght flas hes, the i ndicated ca rtridge is lo w on ink. This i s a go od tim e to make s ure you ha ve a n e w cartri dge. Wh en the light stays on, the cartridge is e mpty an d you need to replace it.
62 Removing and Installin g Ink Cartridges Be sure you have a new ink cartridge be fore you begin. Once you start th e ink cartridge replacem ent procedure, you mu st comp lete all the s teps in o ne se ssion. Follow th ese steps to repl ace ink cartridg es: 1.
63 6. Unwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove the yellow tape seal o n top. 7. Tilt the i nk cartridge forward slightly as you lowe r it into its h older .
64 8. Press down the ink cartridge clamp until it locks in place. (The color clamp is a bi t harder to close t han the black clamp.) 9. If you n eed to re place the othe r ink cartridge, repeat steps 4 through 8 before continuing with step 10. 10. Press the orange ink cartridge replace ment button and close the pri nter cover.

66 Transportin g the Printer If you move your p rinter some distance, you nee d to prepare it for t ransportation in its or iginal bo x or one o f a similar size . Follow t hese st eps: To avoid damag e, always leave the ink ca rtridges ins talled whe n transp orting th e printer.

68 P is on The P power light is on when the printer is ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a print job, c harging ink, or cleaning the print head. S flashes and B and A are on When the S paper out light flashes and both ink out lights c ome on, you have a paper jam.

73 Problems Getting Good Prin t Quality You see horizontal banding. ■ Make sure the prin t head n ozzles ar e not clo gged. To cle an the print head, see page 57. ■ Make sure the Medi a Type setting match es th e pape r you loade d. See page 32 for guidel ines.
74 Your printout is blurry or smeared. ■ Make sure your paper isn ’t damp or curled, or loaded face do wn. If it’s damp or curled, re load new paper. ■ Use a support sh eet or l oad yo ur paper o ne sh eet at a time. ■ Make sure your paper me ets the specificati ons in the e lectron ic Reference Guide .
75 You see wrong or missi ng colors. ■ Make sure the In k setti ng is se t to Color for color images and your applicatio n is se t for color printi ng. ■ Make sure the prin t head n ozzles ar e not clo gged. To cle an the print head, see page 57. ■ Make sure a n ink cartridge isn’t low on ink.
76 Problems with P aper Feeding Too many copies are printing. Make sure the Copies set tings in the prin ter soft ware an d your applicatio n aren ’t both s et for multip le copies. Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. ■ If th e pape r do esn’t e jec t ful ly, you may hav e set the wr ong p aper size.
