8 ■ If you use an extension cord wit h the printer , ma ke sure the total ampere r ating of the devices pl ugged into the extension cor d does not exceed the cord ’ s ampere rating. Also, make sure the total ampere rating of all device s plugged into the wall outl et does not exceed the wall outlet’ s ampere rating.
9 Printing from Start to Finish Here ’ s how you print a basic document—such as a memo, newsletter , or photograph— from loading the paper to selecting pri nt settings to controlling the print job. Y ou can p ractice select ing settings usi ng the EPSON Guided P rinting Exercise, as described on the next page.

12 Openin g the P rinter Soft ware After you open your application pro gram and create your document, you ’ re ready to s elect yo ur printe r softw are sett ings.
13 Sel ecting Prin ter S oftw are Setti ngs Once you cl ick Properties , you see your printer software Properties dialog box. The most important thing to remember is to set the correct Media T ype for the pa per you ’ re u sing. T he Media T ype settin g affe cts the other option s you can choose.
14 Selecting Windows Default Settings The printer settings you make apply o nly to the appl ication you ’ re curr ently using. I f you usually p rint one type of document i n differ ent applic ations—f or example, b lack ink o n legal si ze pape r—you ca n change the default prin ter settings for all your programs.
15 After a moment, the Pr ogress M eter appears and shows the progress of your print job. Y o u can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or restart printing. Y o u can also see how much ink y ou have left and view printing tips. F or more advanced printer settings, see pages 19 through 22.
16 Load ing Pape r Make sur e your printer and com puter are turned on. Place your paper against the right edge g uide and slide the left edge guide against the paper . Keep the follo wing in mind when loading paper: ■ Load the prin table s ide fac e up.
17 Make the followin g settings on the page setup dialo g box: ■ Mak e s ure yo ur p ri nt er ( SC 670 ) is se lected. ( If no t, you need to select your pr inter in t he Choose r; see the Start Here pos ter fo r instructi ons.) ■ Select the correct Paper Size , Orientati on , and Printable Area settings for your document.
18 ■ S et the sl ider in the M ode box to Quality or Speed . This le ts you choo se betwee n a highe r resolu tion o r faste r printin g. ( The slid er is not available when certain media types are selected.) ■ When you ’ ve select ed your s ettings, click Print .
19 Printing with Photo Enhance Y ou can choose P hotoEnhance settings th at incre ase image bri ghtness and contrast to improve the appearance of lo w-resolution photos. Y ou can also add speci al effect s, such as S oft F ocus. Y ou can sele ct Phot oEnhance fr om the p rinter so ftware Main me nu: T o use PhotoEnhance, you must select Color ink.
20 Using Custo m Project Types Your EPSO N Stylus CO LOR 670 p rinter so ftware incl udes custo m proj ect t ypes with p res et op tions for printi ng spec if ic ty pes of d ocume nts like chart s or drafts. Y ou can quickl y select t he best s ettings f or your particular type of document and paper, or select a color-matching method.
21 Choo se a projec t type fo llowin g these guide lines ( these s ettings a re restricted b y your M edia T ype and Ink settings): ■ Text/Graph : For printing graphics-intensive docume nts like presentations with charts and graphs. ■ Economy : For printing rough drafts of text on plain paper.
22 Select any settings you need to change. Many of the settings ar e automatical ly selecte d by othe r settin gs you choo se. F or more details on the p rinter setti ngs, see your electroni c Refer ence Guide , as described on page 3, or online help .
23 Matte Pape r - Heavyweigh t Matte P aper - Heavyweight has a professional-looking, flat matte fini sh for printing photos and graphics on a non-glossy surface. Load up to 20 sheet s as des cribed on pa ge 11, i ncludi ng a sup por t shee t beneath the stack.
24 2. When you create the image in your application, size it to 4.25 × 6.25 inches. Or use your printe r soft war e ’ s Redu ce/Enlarge (Windows) or F it to P age (Macinto sh) set tings, as desc ribe d in yo ur el ectr onic Reference Guide . 3. Cho ose Photo Paper as the Med ia T yp e setting .
25 Enve lopes Y ou can load up to 10 envel opes at a time, flap edge first and printable side up . Place them against the right edge guide and slide the left edge guide against them. (Y o u ’ll get better results if yo u press eac h envelo pe flat be fore loa ding it, or load one envelope at a time.
26 Selecting Your Paper Y our printer automati cally adjust s itse lf for the t ype o f pape r yo u selec t in y our printer software. That ’ s why the Media T yp e setting is so im por tan t. It tells your prin ter what kind of paper you ’ re usi ng and adjusts the ink co verage accor dingly .
27 Maintaining Your Printer This sec tion descri bes the most co mmon maintenance pr ocedures to keep your printer working at its best and to prepare it to be mo ved.
28 2. I f you have an applic ation running, open the p rinter settings dialog box as desc ribed on page 12 (Windo ws) or page 16 (Mac intosh). Or , with Win dows, cli ck Start , point to Settings , t hen select Printers . Right-clic k the EPSON Stylus C OLOR 670 printer icon, then se lect Properties ( Document Defaults in Windows NT ).
29 Using th e Cont rol Panel F ollow the s teps be lo w to clean the print head. (S ee page 38 for more control panel information.) 1. M ake sure the printe r is turned on but not pr inting, and both the B black and A color ink out lights are off. (If an ink out light is flash ing, repla ce the ink cartr idge b efore co ntinui ng.
30 7. I f the nozzle check pattern has no gaps, click Finish . If the patte rn is mis sing do ts, clic k Clean to clean the print he ad again. 8. I f you don ’ t see any impr ov ement af ter cl eaning fo ur or fi ve t imes, check the so lutio ns beg inn ing on page 4 2.

32 4. Lift the ca rtridg e out of the printer and dispos e of it carefully . 5. U nwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove only t he y ello w part of the tape seal on top. 6. Lower the ne w ink ca rtr idge int o its ho lder with the l abel f acing up and toward the back of the printer .
33 Repla cing an Outd ated In k Ca rtrid ge When an installed ink cartridge is mor e than six months old, you may need to replace it if you notice that your printouts don ’ t look as good as they used to. If print quality doesn ’ t improve after cleaning and aligning the pr int head, you can r eplace one or bot h cartridg es.
34 5. U nwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove only t he y ello w part of the tape seal on top. 6. Lower the ne w ink ca rtr idge int o its ho lder with the l abel f acing up and toward the back of the printer . Then press down the ink ca rtridge clamp until it locks in place, but don ’ t press down on the cartridge itself.
35 Aligning the Print Head If your printouts contain misali gned vertical lines, you may need to align the print head. Y our printer must be connected to a local port, not on a network, to use the Print Head Alignment utility . F ollow these steps: 1.
36 Cleaning th e Printer T o keep you r printer working at i ts best, yo u should clea n it seve ral times a year . F o llow these st eps: 1. T urn off the prin ter and wait for th e P power light to go out. Then unplug t he pow er cor d and disconnect t he print er cable .
37 Solving Problems This se ction gi ves yo u the basi cs for diagnosi ng and sol ving pri nter problems. ■ F irst se e “Di agnos ing P rinte r P roblems ” on the ne xt pa ge to help determine w hat the cause of the prob lem may be.
38 Diagnosing Printer Problems Y ou can diagnose some problems by checking the printer’ s control panel lights, as described belo w , or running a printer check, as described on page 40. 39 P is on The P power light is on when the printer is on and ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a p rint job, charging ink, or cle aning the print head. S flashes When the S paper out light flashes, you have a paper jam. Press the E load/eject button to try to c lear the jam.
40 Running a Pr inter Check Y ou can run a pr inter chec k to deter mine whether a p roblem co mes fr om the printer i tself or some oth er source. Follow these steps to ru n the printe r chec k: 1. M ake sure b oth the printer and compu ter are turne d off.
41 Problems and Solutions He re ar e some basic tr ouble shooting t ips in case you have any problems setting up your print er , insta lling so ftwar e, feed ing paper , or getting good print quality . 42 Printing is too slow . Make su re your syst em meets t he r equir ement s listed on page 6. If you ’ re printing a high-resolution image, you need more than the minimum r equirements li sted. Y ou may also need to: ■ Clear space on your hard disk or run a defragmentation utility .

44 You see w rong or missing colors. ■ Make sure the Ink setting is set to Color for color imag es and your app licat ion i s set for co lor print ing. ■ Make sur e the print he ad nozzles are not clogged. T o clean the print head, see page 27. ■ Make sur e an ink cartridge isn ’ t low on ink.
45 Too many copies are prin ting. Mak e s u re th e Copies settings in the printer software and your application aren ’ t both set for mult iple copi es.
46 The printe r prints bla nk pages. ■ Make sure the p aper set tings in the prin ter software are corr ect for your paper size. See your electronic Reference Guid e for instruct ions. ■ Make sur e the print head no zzles are not clogged. T o clean the print head, see page 27.
