6 Introduction With a wir eless network, you shar e information between computers and printers using radio waves, similar to the technology used in cor dless phones. Y ou can place the EPSON S tylus C84WN in a convenient location and print to it without having to connect it to your computer or network.
Windows System Requirements 7 Befor e you can set up your EPSON S tylus C84WN, you need to decide how you will use it: either with an access point (in infrastructure mode ), or without an access point (in ad hoc mode , also called ad hoc 802.11b , computer-to-computer , and peer-to-peer).

Setting Up the Printer and Print Server 11 Setting Up the Printer and Print Server This chapter describes how to unpack and set up your printer and print server , and make sure that both are working properly . Y ou can locate the printer and print ser ver anywhere in your home or office.
12 Setting Up the Printer and Print Server Unpacking F ollow these steps to unpack the printer , remove the packaging material, and attach the paper support: 1. T ake ever ything out of the box. Make sur e you have all the items sho wn here: 2. Remo ve all the tape and packing material from the printer , as shown.

Loadin g Paper 15 9. Close the cartridge cov er . 10. P ress the printer ’ s H ink button and close the printer co ver . Ink charging takes about 90 seconds. Y ou see the green P power light flash and hear the printer working. D on ’ t turn off the printer during this process or you ’ll waste ink.

Connecting the Print Server 17 3. Locate the parallel cable included with the printer . Connect the larger end of the cable to the printer’ s parallel por t. Secur e it with the wire clips. 4. Connect the other end of the cable to the parallel port on the print ser ver and secure it as necessary .

Before y ou begin, print a status page and note the IP address of your print server . Make sur e the printer driver is installed, as described on page 21.
Setting Up a Network Port 29 5. Cli ck Next . Y ou see a window like this: 6. In the Printer Name or IP Address box, enter the print ser ver’ s name (if you ’ re connecting using DHCP) or IP address (if you ’ re connecting in S tatic Mode). Then click Next .

F rom the Start menu, click Settings > Printers . 2. Right-click the EPSON Stylus C84 Series printer icon and then click Properties .
Setting Up Additional Computers 33 If it fails to print, tr y the following: ■ Make sur e that the printer and print server are connected and that both are on. ■ Check the printer to see if a red light is on or flashing, indicating that paper or ink is out, or paper is jammed.

Installing the C84W N Software 37 ■ If your adapter does not include an 802.11b Ad Hoc option, set the wireless mode to Ad Hoc , Compu ter-to- Computer , or whatever mode your adapter uses to communicate without an access point. Do not select a pseudo ad hoc or proprietary ad hoc mode.

46 Solving Wireless Printing Problems Problems and Solutions H ere are some troubleshooting tips if you are having trouble setting up your print ser ver or printing ov er your wireless network. When you start WP-Admin, you see a message that Javaw.exe was not found.
Problems and So lutions 47 ■ If y ou are using WEP encr yption on y our wireless network, disable it on y our computer before you configure the print server . Then enabl e WEP on the print ser ver; see page 26 (Windows) or page 50 (M acintosh). When you ’ re done configuring the print server , enable WEP on yo ur computer again.
48 Solving Wireless Printing Problems You are getting a wireless signal, but you are not able to print. ■ Make sur e the printer and print server are securely connected, both ar e plugged in, and the printer is turned on. ■ If you ’ re running W indows, make sure you set up y our networ k port correctly .
Problems and So lutions 49 Printing is too slow. ■ T r y moving the print server away from large metal objects and other devices that interfere with radio signals, such as cordless phones, micr owave o vens or Bluetooth devices. ■ M ove your computer , print ser ver , and access point (if you have one) closer to each other .
50 Solving Wireless Printing Problems You want to use WEP encryption on your AirPort network. Because AirP ort uses passwor ds that do not follow the standard for WEP encr yption, you need to change your network passwor d to a hexadecimal value. F ollow these steps: 1.

Configuration Settings 55 Appendix A: Configuration Settings The Wir eless Configuration screen includes both fields that display information and fields that allo w you to modify prin t server settings.
56 Configuration Settings IP Address Addr ess used to identify a node on a network supporting the TCP /IP protocol. The format for IP (Internet P r otocol) addresses is a set of four bytes or segments, separated by periods. Each byte can have any value from zero (0) to 254.
Configuration Settings 57 Boot Method M ethod the print ser ver uses to obtain an IP address. AUTO attempts to detect your IP address through DHCP , BOO TP , and RARP . If unable to detect an IP address automatically , it uses the default IP address: 192.
58 Configuration Settings SSID N ame that identifies your wireless network, equivalent to the network name on Macintosh. When y ou configure the print server in WP-Admin, it automatically detects the SSID (Ser vice Set I den tifier) for the wireless network.
