6 About the Sof tw ar e The CD-R OM that came with your P-4000 includes the following software for Windo ws ® and Macintosh. ◗ Y our Epson P-4000 Us er’s Guide, which has instructions for all the features of your P-4000, including printing dire ctly from the P- 4000.

8 P -400 0 Lights and Butt ons OK button Selects an option, opens a folder or photo, and zooms in to an image. Access light Flashes oran ge when you tu rn on the P-4000 or access files. Cancel button Cancels the current operation and return s to the previous screen.
9 Installing the Bat tery 1 T urn the P-4000 upsid e down. 2 Slide the battery cover to the left to open it. 3 Insert the battery into the compar tment with the gold contacts going in first.
10 4 Close the battery cover and slide it to the right until it clicks. Char ging the Bat tery After installing the battery , y o u need to charge it using the AC adapter . When the po wer is off, it takes about 3 hours to fully charge the batter y . With the power on, it takes longer .
11 T o charge the batter y , connect the AC adapter as shown belo w . C onnect the other end to the po wer cor d, and plug it in to an electrical outlet. Caution: Do not connect the AC adapter when the battery is not installed; this can damage the P-4000.
12 T ur ning Y our P -400 0 On and Off ◗ T o turn on the P-40 00, slide the Power switch down and release it. The blue activity light turns on. ◗ T o turn off the P-4000, make sure the Acce ss light is off. Then slide the P powe r switch down and hold it until the Access light flashes.
13 1 P ress the OK button to select English . Y ou see a message about setting the date. 2 P ress the OK button. Y ou see the Date and time screen: 3 P ress right or left on the 4-way ring to change the value for the selected item. 4 T o go to the next item, pr ess down on the 4-way ring.
14 Note: If you remove the battery, the date and time settings will be erased after about one day. The next time you turn on the P-4000, the date and time setting screen will be displayed . If you want to change the settings at any time , select Settings on the Home screen, then select Date and time .
15 Using the Home Scr een Whenever you turn on the P-4000, the H ome screen appears. Y ou can return to the H ome screen at any time by pressing the Home button. U se the 4-way ring to highlight one of the icons, then press the OK button to select it.
16 Installing the Sof tw ar e Make sure you install the software on your computer from the CD-R OM that came with the P-4000. 1 Insert the software CD-R OM in your computer’ s CD-R OM or DVD drive. 2 Open the CD-R OM and double-c lick the Epson icon if necessar y .
17 V iewing and Pla ying Photos, V ideo , and Music F ollow the instructions in this section to insert a memory card, copy files, and view or play them on your P-4000.
18 Caution: Never remove a memory card, or shake or drop the P-4000 while the Access light is flashing. Doing so may cause files to be lost or damag ed. Do not put labels or stickers on memory cards. The sticker may peel off, preventing the card from being ejecte d and damaging the P-4000.
19 If you are using a CompactF lash adapter , put the card into the adapter and insert the adapter into th e slot. Caution: Make sure you insert memory cards in the correct orientation. Otherwise, the card and P-4000 may be damaged. T o remove a card from the C/F Card sl ot, fir st m ak e s ure the Access light is off.
20 Using the Secur e Digital Card Slot Insert the memory card into the slot with the back of the card facing the L CD. Then push the memor y card all the way into the slot. Caution: Make sure you insert memory cards in the correct orientation. Otherwise, the card and P-4000 may be damaged.
21 Copy ing Files from a Memory Car d After you insert a memory card, you can bro wse the files and decide what you w ant to do with them, or simply copy all the files on the card to the P-4000. 1 Insert the memory card as described on page 18 or 20. 2 U se the 4-way ring to highlight Memory Card on the Home screen and pr ess the OK button.
22 3 Select what you want to do b y pressing up or down on the 4-way ring. Then press the OK button. ◗ If you select Copy Data fr om Memory Card , copying starts and the following screen appears: The files are copied to a folder that is automatically created on the P-4000.
23 Note: You should back up files stored on the P-4000 to another storage device periodically. Deleting Files Af ter Copying Y ou can have files automatically deleted after you copy them to the P-4000. 1 On the H ome screen, use the 4- way ring to select Settings and press the OK button.
24 Suppor t ed File F or mats The P-4000 suppor ts non-pr ogressive JPEG files, and RA W files from the following digital SLR cameras: ◗ Eps on R -D 1 ◗ Canon ® EOS-D30, EOS-D60, EOS-10D, EOS-20D.
25 Note: RAW files do not support direct printing, rotation, zooming, or slide shows. Rotation is also not supported for JPEG files larger than 8. 9 megapixels. The P-4000 supports video files in resolutions ranging from 160 × 112 pix els to 640 × 480 pixels, with file sizes up to 2GB.
26 The P-4000 supports audio files with sizes up to 100MB. Br owsing Files on a Memory Card After you select Browse the Memory Card , you see thumbnail images of the files on the car d. T o move to the next screen of thumbnail images, press and hold down the 4-way ring.
27 T o view an image full screen, use the 4-way ring to select the image you want, then press the OK button. P ress right or left on the 4-way ring to display the next or previous image. When an image is displayed full scre en, you can zoom in, view information about the image, or see a histogram, as described on page 32.
28 Using the P -400 0 Screen After you have copied files from a memor y card, you can view or play them in various ways. The following illustrations and tables identify the icons that appear on the screen: PC_D A T A fol d er This is one of the def ault albums, whic h you use for cop ying files from your computer .

30 V iewing Imag es Y ou can view images in Saved Data or Albums as thumbnails or full-screen images. T o display information or instructions, press the Display button. Information and instructions var y depending on the screen. 1 U se the 4-way ring to select Saved Data or Albums in the Home screen, then press the OK button.
31 Note: On the Sav ed Data screen, folders are displayed f or ev e r y memor y card. Y ou can c h ange the set ting to display f olders by date. Select Settings on the Home screen, then select View Mode . 2 U se the 4-way ring to select the folder or album containing the images you want to view , then press the OK button.

33 Displayin g Infor mation T o view information about a full-screen image, press the Display button. The following information is displaye d: Viewing a Hist ogram When an image is displayed full screen, press the Display button twice to see a histogram that shows the photo ’ s distribution of highlights, shado ws, and mid-tones.
34 Displayin g Images as a Slide Show Y ou can display JPEG images as a slide show . 1 Select the folder or album you want to display as a slide show . 2 P ress the Menu button to display the pop-up menu: 3 Select Start Slide Show and press the OK button.
35 Pla ying V ideo and A udio Files Select the video or audio file that you wa nt to play and press the OK button. While playing audi o, the screen turns off to conser ve the battery . P ress any button to turn it back on. ◗ T o raise or lower the volu me, press up or do wn on the 4-way ring.
36 Cop ying Files to and Fr om Y our Comput er Y ou can connect the P-4000 to y our computer using the USB cable that came in the box, and easily copy files back and forth. Y ou should use the AC adapter when you connect the P- 4000 to your compute r .
37 2 Connect the USB cable to your computer . Then open the USB connector cover and connect the other end of the USB cable to the P-4000. The LCD turns off . P ress any button to turn it on. 3 Select the EPSON_PV drive on your computer . Y ou will see an Albums folder and a Cards folder (corresponding to S aved Data on the H ome screen).
38 The PC_DA T A folder is one of the default albums on the P-4000; you cannot rename or delete it or create an album thumbnail for it. Disconnecting the P -400 0 Fr om Y our Window s Comput er 1 Click Unplug or E ject Hardw are on the taskbar at the bottom of the computer screen.
39 Cr eating Custom Albums and Slide Sho w s Y ou can save your files in albums for special purposes, such as portfolios. Y ou can also create slide shows with custom transitions and your own background music. T o share your images, slide shows, and videos with a larger audience, you can connect the P-4000 to a TV or projector .
40 3 P ress the right side of the 4-way ring. The sub-menu appears: 4 Do one of the follo wing, then press the OK button: ◗ If you want to copy only the selected file to an album, select This Data . ◗ If you want to copy all the files in the folder , select All.
41 If you choose Select , files in the fold er are displayed as thumbnails. Select each file you want to copy and pr ess the OK button. The selected files ar e display ed with a check mark. After selecting all the files you want to copy , press the Menu button.
42 ◗ If you want to create an album with a new name, select New and press the OK button. Then continue with the next step. 6 Select Input name and press the OK button. The on-screen keyboar d appears: 7 Select a letter using the 4-way ring, then pr ess the OK button to input the selected letter .
43 ◗ T o switch the letters between uppercase and low ercase, select CAPS and press the OK button. ◗ T o delete the last letter input, press the Cancel button or select BACKSPACE on the screen and press the OK button. ◗ T o delete everything that was input, select Cancel on the screen and press the OK button.
44 3 Select Set as Album Sh ortcut and press OK . T he icon is displayed on the album thumbnail. Note: You can also press the Menu button to change the alb um name, lock, del ete, or copy the album to a memory card, or sort albums. For more information, see the P-4000 User’s Guide on the CD-ROM or on your computer.
45 Cr eating Custom Slide Sho w s with Music Y ou can create slide shows of all the images in a folder or album. Y ou can choose from 5 different transition effects and 5 different background music selections. Y ou can also register up to 3 of your o wn music files to use for slide shows.
46 Cr eating the Slide Sho w Y ou can create a slide show from images in a folder or album in the P-4000 or on a memory card. The easiest way to selec t files for your slide s how is to copy them to an album.
47 7 P ress the Menu button and select Slide Show BGM . Select one of the audio files you r egistered, or select from one of the 5 default music selections.
48 F oll ow these steps to connect the P-4000 to your TV: 1 Connect the thr ee R CA plugs to the video and audio IN jacks on your TV . 2 Connect the mini-plug on the other end of the cable to the A/V Out connector on the side of the P-4000. The P-4000 LCD screen turns off.
49 Solving Pr oblems Check this list of common problems and possible solutions. F or more troubleshooting tips, check the P-4000 User’s Guide on the CD-R OM or on your computer . P ow er Pr oblems The power doesn ’ t turn on. ◗ The P-4000 may have shut off aut omatically to save power .
50 Images or videos ar e not displayed correctly , or sound doesn ’ t play correctly . ◗ Make sur e the file format is supported. See page 24 for details about supported image file formats. F or aud io and video, make sure the bit rate and audio codec of your file are supported.
51 ◗ When transferring files from a computer , make sur e the P-4000 is at the Home scr een, and copy files to the PC_DA T A folder within the Albums folder (see pages 36 to 38). Y ou can ’ t rotate an image. The image must be a JP EG in the Albums folder , and it cannot be larger than 8.

53 Appendix Important Saf ety Instr uctions Using the P-4000 ◗ F ollow all warnings and instruct ions marked on this product. ◗ U se only AC adapter model A351H and Lithium-ion batter y model D111A with this product. ◗ When connecting this product to a computer or other device with a cable, ensure the co rrect orientation of the connectors.
54 ◗ T o prevent fire or electric sh ock, do not cover this product with a blanket or other covering that may give off a static electric shock. ◗ T o prevent fire or electric sh ock, do not expose this product or its options to rain or moisture.
55 ◗ Do not insert objects into any openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-circuit components. ◗ Pr event the battery from coming into contact with metal objects that could short-circuit it, such as coins or keys.
56 Warning: Be sure to securely cover the end of the battery with tape to prevent combustion or explos ion when disposing of it. Do not incinerate or dispos e of the battery in fire. Do not dispose of batteries as ordi nary refu se. Instead, dispose of them in a collection or recycle box in accordance with local laws.
57 ◗ If you use an extensi on cord with this product, make sure the total amperage of all device s plugged into the extensio n cord does not exceed the cor d’ s amperage rating. ◗ N ever disassemble, modify , or atte mpt to repair the AC adapter by yourself.
