2 Read Before Using the Print er Read Before Using the Printer This gu ide consists of three chap ters. The first and the second chapters describ e how to set up yo ur pr inter and install the pr inter software. The l ast chapter provides det ailed safety and environmenta l informat ion.
Setting Up the Printer 3 1 Setting Up the Printer Foll ow th e instru ctio ns in this chap ter to u npac k an d set up your printe r. 1-1 Unpacking the Printer Besides the i tems shown in the i llustration below, the printer box should inc lude an EPSON pr inter softwa re CD-ROM and a Noti ce Sheet.
4 Settin g Up the P rinter c Caution: There are several models of the printer designed for different voltages, and it is not possible to adjust the printer for use with another voltage. If the label on the back of the printer does not show the correct voltage for your country, contact your d ealer.

Attaching the paper guide To attach the paper gu ide to you r printer, i nsert the t abs on the paper gui de straigh t down into t he mounti ng slots on the printer .
Setting Up the Printer 7 When you are not using the paper gui de, lay it flat on the printer to preve nt it from ob structing your p aper or being damaged. To lay the p aper guid e down, lift it up sl ightly, then lower it until it is ly ing fla t on top o f the pr int er.
8 Settin g Up the P rinter 1. Make sur e the print er is turned off. Th e printer i s off when the powe r switch is pr essed down to the N side. 2. If the print er is connect ed to an electrica l outlet, un plug it from the outlet . 3. Open the pri nter cover t o the upright position, t hen pull it up to remove i t.
Setting Up the Printer 9 4. Press the tabs on each side of the p aper tension unit upward, then lift t he front of the uni t and pull i t up and out o f the print er. 5. Make sure the p rint head is not hot; if it is, l et it cool for a f ew min utes bef ore to uc hin g it.
10 Settin g Up the P rinter 6. Remove the new rib bon cartri dge fro m the pac kage and t urn the ribb on-tig htening knob in the direct ion of the arrow to remove a ny slack fr om the ribb on so it is easier to install.
Setting Up the Printer 11 8. Use a pointe d object , such as a bal l point pen, to guide the ribbon be tween the pr int head and ribbon gui de. Turn the ribbon-tigh tening knob to help feed the r ibbon into pla ce; it shou ld n ot be tw iste d or c reas ed.
12 Settin g Up the P rinter 10. Reinstall the paper tensio n unit by placing it on the printer’ s mounting pegs and lowe ring it into place. Pre ss down on both sides o f the u nit unt il it cl icks into p lace .
Setting Up the Printer 13 1-5 Connecting the Printer to Your Computer Your printer is equipped with both an I EEE-1284-co mpatible parallel int erface and a USB (Univers al Serial Bus) interface. Al so a Type-B op tional in terface sl ot is provid ed in case y our computer requires a different type of pr inter int erface.
14 Settin g Up the P rinter 3. Squeeze the wir e clips toge ther until they lock i n place on both sides of the connector. Note: If there is a ground wire at the end of the cable, attach it to the printer’s ground connector as shown below. 4. Plug the ot her end of the c able into the computer’ s paralle l interfac e port.
Setting Up the Printer 15 Using the US B inter face To connect the printer t o a USB port , you need a st andard, shielded USB cable. Note: ❏ In order to connect your co mputer via the USB interface, your computer must be a Windows Me, 98, or 2000 pre-installed model that is equipped with a USB port.
