8 ■ If you use an extension cord wit h the printer , make sure the total ampere r ating of the devices pl ugged into the extension cor d does not exceed the cord ’ s ampere rating. Also, make sure the total ampere rating of all device s plugged into the wall outl et does not exceed the wall outlet’ s ampe re rating.
9 Printing from Start to Finish Here ’ s how you print a bas ic document—such as a memo, newsletter , or photograph— from loading the paper to selecting pri nt settings to controlling the print job. Y ou can practice select ing settings usi ng the EPSON Guided P r inting Ex ercise, as described on the next page.

11 Printing with Windows This se ction describes these basic st eps f or printi ng with Windo ws: ■ loadi ng pap er ■ openi ng the pr inter so ftware ■ select ing printer soft ware settings ■ controlling pr inting (T o print on a Macintosh, see page 15 .
12 Openin g the Printer Software After you open your application pro gram and create your document, you ’ re r e ady to sele ct your printer so ftware settings .
13 Sel ecting Printer S oftware Settings Once you cl ick Properties , you see your printer software Properties dialog box. The most important thing to remember is to set the correct Media T yp e for th e paper you ’ re usin g. Th e Media T y pe sett ing af fects th e other options you can choose.
14 Selecting Windows Default Settings The printer settings you make apply o nly to the appl ication you ’ re curr ently using. I f you usually p rint one type of document i n differ e nt applic ations—for example, b lack ink on legal si ze paper—you ca n change the default prin ter settings for all your programs.
15 After a moment, the Pr o gress M eter appears and shows the progress of your print job. Y ou can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or restart printing. Y ou can also see how much ink y o u have left and view printing tips. F or more advanc ed printer se ttings, see pages 19 through 22.
16 Load ing Pape r Make sur e your printer and com puter are turned on. Place your paper against the right edge g uide and slide the left edge guide against the paper . Keep the follo wing in mind when loading paper: ■ Load the prin table s ide fac e up.
17 Make the followin g settings on the page setup dialo g box: ■ Mak e s ure yo ur p ri nt er ( SC 670 ) is selecte d . (I f not, yo u need to select your printer in t he Chooser; see the Start Here pos ter fo r instructi ons.) ■ Select the correct Paper Size , Orient ation , and Printable Area settings for your document.
18 ■ S et the sl ider in the M o de bo x to Quality or Speed . This let s you choo se betwee n a highe r resolu tion o r faste r printin g. ( The slid er is not available when certain media types are selected.) ■ When you ’ ve selecte d your s ettings, click Print .
19 Printing with PhotoEnhance Y ou can choose PhotoE nhance settings that incr ease image brightness and contrast to improve the appearance of lo w -resolution photos. Y ou can also add speci al effect s, such as S oft F ocus. Y ou can select Pho toEnhance from the printer softwa re M ain menu: T o use Pho toEnhance, you must select Color ink.
20 Using Custo m Project Types Your EPSO N Stylus COLOR 670 p rinter so ftware incl udes custom proj ect types with pres et options for printi ng specif ic types of d ocuments like chart s or drafts. Y ou can quickl y select the best s e ttings f o r your particular type of document and paper, or select a color-matching method.
21 Choo se a projec t type fo llowin g these guide lines ( these s ettings a re restricted b y your Media T ype and Ink settings ): ■ Text/Graph : For printing graphics-intensive do cuments like presentations with charts and graphs. ■ Economy : For printing rough drafts of text on plain paper.
22 Select any settings you nee d to change. Many of the settings ar e automatical l y select ed by other setti ngs you choose. F or more de tails on the p rinter setti ngs, see your electronic Refer ence Guide , as described on page 3, or online help .
23 Matte Pape r - Heavyweigh t Matte P a per - Heavyweight has a profess i onal-looking, flat matte finish for printing photos and graphics on a non-glossy surface. Load up to 20 sheet s as des cribed on pa ge 11, i ncludi ng a sup por t shee t beneath the stack.
24 2. When you create the image in your application, size it to 4.25 × 6.25 inches. Or use your printe r softwar e’ s Redu ce/Enlarge ( Windo ws) or F it to P age (Macinto sh) settings, as desc ribed in yo ur electr onic Reference Guide . 3. Cho ose Photo Paper as the Med ia T y p e settin g.
25 Enve lopes Y ou can load up to 10 envelopes at a time, flap edge first and printable side up . Place th em against the right edge guide and slide the left edge guide against them. (Y ou ’ll get be tter result s if you pres s each envelope fl at be fore load ing it, or load one envelope at a time.
26 Selecting Your Paper Y our printer automati cally adjus ts itse lf for the t ype of pape r you selec t in your printer software. That ’ s why the Media T ype setting is so im por tan t. It tells your prin ter what kind of paper you ’ re usi ng and adjusts the ink co verage accor dingly .
27 Maintaining Your Printer This sec t ion descri bes the most common maintenance pr ocedure s to keep your printer working at its best and to prepare it to be mo ved.
28 2. I f you have an applic ation r unning, open the printer settings dialog box as desc r ibed on page 12 (Windo ws) or page 16 (Macintosh). Or , wi th Windows, clic k Start , point to Settin gs , then select Printers . Right-clic k the EPSON Stylus C OLOR 670 printer icon, then se lect Properties ( Document Defaults in Windows NT ).
29 Using th e Cont rol Panel F ollow the steps belo w to clean the pri n t head . (See page 38 for mo re control panel information.) 1. M a ke sure the printer i s turned on but not pr inting, and both the B black and A color ink out lights are off. (If an ink out li ght is flash ing, repla ce the ink cartr idge b efore co ntinui ng.
30 7. I f the nozzle check pattern has no gaps, click Finish . If the pattern is mis sing dots, cl ick Cl ean to clean the pr int head again. 8. I f you don ’ t see any imp rovemen t after cleaning four or five times, check the so lutio ns beg inn ing on page 4 2.

32 4. Lift the ca rtridg e out of the printer and dispos e of it carefully . 5. U nwr ap the new ink cartrid ge. Then remove only the ye llow part o f the tape seal on top. 6. Lower the ne w ink ca rtr idge int o its ho lder with the l abel f acing up and toward the back of the printer .
33 Repla cing an Outd ated Ink Ca rtridge When an installed ink cartridge is mor e th an six months old, you may need to replace it if you notice that your printouts don ’ t look as good as they used to. If print quality doesn ’ t improv e after cleaning and aligning the pr int head, you can r eplace one or bot h cartridges.
34 5. U nwr ap the new ink cartrid ge. Then remove only the ye llow part o f the tape seal on top. 6. Lower the ne w ink ca rtr idge int o its ho lder with the l abel f acing up and toward the back of the printer . Then press down the ink cartri dge clamp until it locks in place, but don ’ t press do w n on the cartridge itself.
35 Aligning the Print Head If your printouts contain misali gned vertical lines, you may need to align the print head. Y our pr inter must be connected to a local port, not on a network, to use the Print Head Alignment utility . Follow these steps: 1.
36 Cleaning th e Printer T o keep your print er working at it s best, you should clean it several times a year . F o llow these st eps: 1. T urn off the printer and wait f or the P power light to go out. Then unplug t he pow er cord and di sconnect the p rinter c able.

38 Diagnosing Printer Problems Y ou can diagnose some p roblems by checking the printer’ s c ontrol panel lights, as described belo w , or ru nning a printer check, as described o n page 40. Checking the Contr ol Pa nel L ights F ollo w the gu idelines on t he next page when y ou chec k the control panel ligh ts.
39 P is on The P power light is on when the printer is on and ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a p rint job, charging ink, or cle aning the print head. S flashes When the S paper out light flashes, you have a paper ja m . Press the E load/eject button to try to c lear the jam.
40 Running a Pr inter Check Y ou can run a printer check to determine whethe r a problem comes f rom the printer i tself or some oth er source. Follow these steps to ru n the printe r chec k: 1. M ake sure b o th the printer and compu t er ar e turn ed off.
41 Problems and Solutions He re are some basic troubleshooti ng tips in case you have any problems setting up your print er , installi ng software, f e eding p aper , or getting good print quality . Proble ms Setting Up the Printer or Installing Softwar e The printe r started making noise after i n k cartridge installation.
42 Printing is too slow . Make su re your syst em meets t he requir ements listed on page 6. If you ’ re printing a high-resolution image, you need more than the minimum r e quirements li sted. Y ou may also need to: ■ Clear space on your hard disk or run a defragmentation utility .
43 ■ Run the Print Head Al ignm ent u tilit y using EPSON ink jet pape r . See page 35 for ins tr uctions. ■ T ry using A utomatic mode. See page 13 (Windows ) or page 1 7 (Macintosh ) for instruct ions. ■ Tu r n o f f High Speed prin ting in the Advanced dialog box.
44 You see w rong or missing colors. ■ Make sure the Ink setting is set to Color for color imag es and your app licat ion i s set for co lor print ing. ■ Make sur e the print head no zzles are not clogged. T o clean the print head, see page 27. ■ Make sur e an ink cartridge isn ’ t low on ink.
45 Too many copies are prin ting. Mak e s u re th e Copies settings i n the printer software and your application aren ’ t both set for mult iple copi es.
46 The printe r prints blank pages. ■ Make sure the p aper set tings in the prin ter software are corr ect for your paper size. See your electronic Reference Guid e for instruct ions. ■ Make sur e the print head no zzles are not clogged. T o clean the print head, see page 27.
