1 Setting Up the Projector 5 Setting Up th e Projector This chapter tells yo u how t o unpack your projec tor and s et it up for a presentati on. The projec tor must be conn ected to a computer or a video source such as a DVD player, VCR, camcorder, dig ital camera, or other vi deo d evice be fore it c an projec t image s.
6 Setting Up the Projector Additional Components Depending on how you use the pr ojector, yo u may need these additional co mponents: ■ To receive an S-Vi deo signal, you need an S -Video cabl e (usually provid ed wi th your video de vice ).

8 Setting Up the Projector Use the figure be low as a guideline to he lp you d etermine how far from the s creen to p lace the proje ctor. Your image size may not exactly match these sizes; its actua l siz e dep ends on wheth er yo u ha ve ad just ed the image size setting (using keys tone correc tion or the Wide/Tele butto n).

To connect the pro jector to your Pow erBook, you need to use the com puter cable. If you ’ ll be using the remote control as a wireless mouse, you need to connect a mouse cable.
Setting Up the Projector 15 Connecting the Mouse Cable To use the remote control as a wireless mouse, you need to connect the USB mouse cab le. 1. Connect o ne end of the USB mo use cable to the USB Mouse por t on the projec tor. 2. Connect the other end to the USB port on your P owerB ook.
16 Setting Up the Projector Connecting to a Macinto sh Desktop Compu ter To connect the pr ojector to yo ur desktop Macintosh , you need to use the computer cable. If you ’ l l be using the re mote control as a wireless mouse, you need to co nnect a mouse ca ble.
Setting Up the Projector 17 Connecting the Mouse Cable To use the remote control as a wireless mouse, you need to connect the USB mouse cab le. 1. Connect o ne end of the USB mo use cable to the USB Mouse por t on the projec tor. 2. Connect the other end to the USB po rt on your Ma cintosh.

Connecting to Video Sources You ca n con nect a DVD pla yer, V CR, camc ord er, la ser di sc pla yer, digit al camer a, or an y othe r compat ible vid eo sour ce to yo ur proj ector.
Setting Up the Projector 19 Connecting an S-Video C able If your video source ha s an S-Video jack (as shown with an S-Video plug to the right), you c an use it to project a higher quality video image.
20 Setting Up the Projector Before you start , make sure the proj ector and your compon ent video sourc e are turned off. 1. Co nne ct th e red a nd wh ite plu gs on t he A/V cabl e to th e projecto r ’ s Audio L (whi te) and R (red) jac ks.
Setting Up the Projector 21 Connecting to External Speakers or a PA System The projec tor ’ s sp eake r is lo ud e noug h for m ost smal l- or m edi um-s ize rooms. For l arge rooms or maximum vo lume, you can connect the projector to external speaker s or a public address (PA) system.

2 Using the Projector 23 Using the Projector Once you ’ ve connected the pro jector to yo ur computer o r other equip ment (as d escrib ed in Ch apter 1), you ’ re ready to turn on the projector, adjust the image, and give your presentation.
24 Using the Projector 3. Connect the other end to a grounded el ectrical outlet. The Power light on the proj ector turns orange, ind icating that the pr ojecto r is receiv ing po wer and i s in sl eep mod e, but is not yet turned on. 4. Remove the lens cap.
Using the Projector 25 What To Do If Yo u See a Blank Screen If you see a blank scree n or a blue screen with the message No Signal after turning on your computer or video source, do one of the foll owin g: ■ Make sure the c ables are conne cted cor rectly, as descri bed in Chapter 1.
26 Using the Projector If You ’ re Using a PowerBook . . . You may need to set up your system to display on the proje ctor scree n as well as the L CD scree n. Follow th ese step s: 1. From the Appl e menu, select Control Panels , then click Monitors and Sound.
Using the Projector 27 If You ’ re Using a PC Laptop . . . ■ Press the function ke y that lets you disp lay on an external monitor. It ’ s often labelled with an icon such as but it may be labe lled CRT/ LCD . You may have to hold down the Fn key whil e pres sing it.
28 Using the Projector Adjusting the Image Size You can adjust your image size usi ng the Wide/Tele button o n the projecto r or zoom in to a portio n of the image using the E-Zoom button on the re mote control. Using the Wide/Tele Button To enlarge or reduce your image siz e in small inc rements, use the Wide/Tele button on the pro jector.
Using the Projector 29 Adjusting the Image Heig ht If your i mage is too low, yo u can rais e it by ex tending t he proj ecto r ’ s feet. 1. Stand behind the proj ector. Pull up the blue fo ot release levers and lift the front of the projec tor. This unloc ks the fee t.

Using the Projector 31 Using the Remote C ontrol The remote control lets yo u access projector f eatures from anywher e in the ro om — up to 32 feet away. You must also be within a 30 ° horizontal and a 15 ° vertical angle o f the infrar ed receiv er on the fro nt of the proj ector.
32 Using the Projector Operating the Projector with the Remote Control 1. Push up the R/ C switch on the side o f the remote contr ol to turn it on. 2. Point the remote at the front of the p rojector or at th e scre en. 3. Press the button for the function you want to use.

T o mo ve th e mous e po inte r on the s cre en, pres s the edges of the Ent er button with your thumb, as you would to move a trackball.
34 Using the Projector Freezing the Picture You can use the r emote contro l to freez e the curr ent picture o n the screen . ■ Press t he Freeze button to freeze the cur rent image on the screen. The soun d will conti nue. ■ Press the Freeze button again to re-start it.
Using the Projector 35 Highlighting Your Presen tation The pro jector ’ s hi ghlighting tools let yo u emphasize are as on the screen usin g the numbered buttons o n the remote control. This is useful for annotating your pre sentation slides or calling attention to their most im portant poi nts.

3 Fine-Tuning the Projector 37 Fine-Tuning the Projector You can use the on -screen menus to ad just the im age, sound, and other features of you r proj ector.
38 Fine-Tuning the Projector ■ About provides in formati on about the cur rent projector and lamp settings, and lets you reset the lamp timer wh en you ’ ve replaced the p rojector ’ s lamp. ■ Reset All restore s the factory def aults to all the proj ector settings.

42 Fine-Tuning the Projector Customizing Projec tor Features You can use the Setting menu and the Advanced menu to adjust a variety of pro jector func tions. * You can also u se the Ke ystone button on the project or to ad just this s etting. If the image is noticeably uneven, reduce the S harpness setting on the V ideo menu.
Fine-Tuning the Projector 43 Viewing Projector Information The About menu lets you view informati on about the display settings of your comp uter, your vi deo signal mod e, and the number of hour s the lamp has b een used. T he options available in the menu depen d on which source is connected to the projector: computer or vide o.
44 Fine-Tuning the Projector Restoring the Default Sett ings The Reset Al l setting lets you return all the projec tor ’ s menu settings to their initia l fac tory defau lts, e xcept fo r the Lam p and Langu age settings. Select Reset Al l and press the Enter button on the remote control to display the confir mation sc reen.
4 Maintaining and Transporting the Projector 45 Maintaining and Transporting the Projector Your projector ne eds little maintenance. All you need to do on a regular basis is keep the le ns clea n. Any dirt or sm ears on the lens will show up on your projec ted im age.
46 Maintaining and Transporting the Pr ojector Cleaning the Lens Clean the le ns whenever you notice dirt o r dust on the surface. ■ To remov e du st, use a canist er of compre ssed ai r to s pray th e lens surface, or lightly wipe the lens surface with a so ft, dry, lint-free clo th.
Maintaining and Transporting the Projector 47 Cleaning the Ai r Intake Vent Clean the air intake vent after eve ry 100 hours of use, or if the Error light on top of th e projecto r turns re d. If the v ent is not cle aned per iodicall y, it ca n become clo gged with dust, preventing proper ventilation.
48 Maintaining and Transporting the Pr ojector Replacing the Lamp The projecti on lamp typically lasts fo r about 1500 hours of use. It is time to replace the lamp wh en: ■ The projec ted image gets d arker or start s to deteri orate. ■ The Error light on top of the projector is flashing red i n 1-se cond in terva ls.
Maintaining and Transporting the Projector 49 5. Use a scre wdriv er to loo sen the two lamp cover s crews; you can ’ t remove the screws . Then pull out th e lamp by the two notc hes. 6. Position the new lamp correc tly, then gently insert it int o the projecto r.
50 Maintaining and Transporting the Pr ojector Transporting the Projector The projector contains many glass and precision parts. If you need to transpor t it, ple ase fol low the se packing guidel ines to prevent damaging the projecto r: ■ When shi pping the pro ject or for repai rs, use the o riginal packaging material if possible.

Solv ing P roblem s 53 Checkin g the Proje ctor ’ s Ligh ts If your projector isn ’ t working c orrectl y, fi rst tur n it off, wait for it to cool, and unplug it. Then plug the power cord back in and turn on the projector . If this doesn ’ t so lve the prob lem, check the li ghts on top of the proj ector.
54 Solv in g Prob lem s Image or Sound Problems No imag e appea rs or the No Si gnal message is displa yed. ■ Check that the Power light is green and not flashi ng and the lens co ver is off. If the Power light is orange, the projector is in sl eep mode; pres s th e Pow er button to wake it up.
Solv ing P roblem s 55 Only part of the computer image is displayed. ■ If the computer ’ s output res olution setting i s higher than 800 × 600 fo r the (EPSON Pow erLite 50c) or 1024 × 768 for the (EPSON Po werLite 70 c), the image is resiz ed.
56 Solv in g Prob lem s The image vibrates, flickers, or has vertical l ines. ■ Adjust the Tracking and Sync settings on the Video menu (or through the proj ector ’ s Help sy stem). It is best to proj ect a full screen containing black text on a white background (such as a letter) when you adj ust these settings.
