Setting Up the Printer 1-3 You must remove all prot ective mater ials packed around and inside your printer before yo u set it up and tur n on the p ower. Follow the d irections on t he Notice Sheet (packed wit h the prin ter) to r emo ve these m ateria ls.
1-4 S etting Up the P rinter ❏ Keep the entir e computer system a way from potential sources of electromag netic inter ference, such a s loudspeaker s or the base units of cordless telephones. ❏ Use a grounded po wer outlet; do not use an a dapter pl ug.

Setting Up the Printer 1-7 3. Squeeze the wire c lips together u ntil they l ock in pla ce on both sides of the connec tor. 4. If your cable ha s a ground wi re, connect it to the pr inter’s ground connect or as shown below. 5. Plug the ot her end of the cabl e into the co mputer.

H old th e ribb on cart ri dge by its hand le an d pu sh it fi rmly down into posit ion; then pr ess on both ends of the cartri dge to make sure the plasti c hooks fit i nto the sl ots. 8. Turn the ri bbon-tighteni ng knob again to remove any slac k in the ribbon and to make sure t he ribbon moves freely.

2-2 Paper Ha ndl ing Your print er can print on a wide variety of paper types, incl uding single sheets, c ontinuous pap er, mult ipart forms, labels, envelopes, postca rds, and ro ll paper. This chapter explains how to use t hese paper types with y our print er.
Paper Handling 2-3 Paper source and pap er types The table bel ow shows whi ch paper source t o use for each paper type. : You can use this paper type with this paper source. – : You cannot use this paper type wit h this paper source. * You can use only carbonless single-sheet multipart forms that are glued at the top of the forms.
2-4 Paper Ha ndl ing Setting the paper release lever (LQ-6 80) Set the paper rel ease lever to select th e paper-feeding method you want the print er to use. The paper release lev er has two posit ions: for tractor feeding and for single-sheet feeding, as expl ained below.

Paper Handling 2-9 Loading con tinuous paper with th e tractor 1. Make sure the printer is turned of f. 2. For LQ-680 users: Sel ect tra ctor fe edin g with t he pap er re lease l ever, and m ake sure the p aper thick ness lever is set to 0 if you are using ordinary continuous pa per.
2-10 Pape r Handling 4. Release the sp rocket loc k levers by pu shing them up . 5. Facing the back of the pri nter, posi tion the left sp rocket unit so that the sprock et pins are to the left of the “0” on t he scale and the a rrow mark on t he printe r.
Paper Handling 2-11 6. Slide the r ight sprocket unit to ro ughly match t he width of your paper , but do no t lock it . 7. Slide the pape r support mi dway between the t wo sprocket units.
2-12 Pape r Handling 8. Open the spro cket covers. 9. Fit the fi rst three hol es of the continu ous paper over t he sprocket pins on both sides. Be sure to lo ad your pa per printab le sid e up. Caution: Make sure the first sheet of your continuous p aper has a clean, straig ht edge so that it can feed smoothly into the printer.
Paper Handling 2-13 10. Close the sprocket cover s. If necessar y, unlock an d reposit ion the left spro cket unit so t hat the per foratio n aligns wit h the arrow mark on the printer. Then lock t he sprocket i n place. 11. Slide the right sprocke t unit to re move a ny slack in the pape r.
2-14 Pape r Handling When using co ntinuous pap er, you can u se the tea r-off function to tear of f printed pages not wastin g any bla nk pages next to the printed pages. For mor e information, see the next sect ion. Note: ❏ You can advanc e the paper to the loading position by pressing the Loa d/Eject b utton before the printer receives data.
Paper Handling 2-15 If the perfora tion between pages is not aligned wi th the tear-off edge, you can adjust the t ear-off positi on using t he micro-adjust feat ure as descri bed la ter in this ch apte r. Caution: Never use the tear-off function to feed labels backwards; they may come off their bac king and jam the p rinter.
2-16 Pape r Handling 2. Tear off all pr inted pages at the tear-off edge. If the perfor ation is not ali gned with the tear-off ed ge, adjust the t ear-off position using the micro -adjust fe ature. See “Adj usting the tear-o ff positi on ” late r in this c h apter.

2-18 Pape r Handling Before pri nting, se t the paper thickness lever t o the correct position for your multipart forms. LQ-680 users sh ould set the lever as d escribed i n the tabl e on page 2- 7. LQ-680Pro users should make su re the le ve r is set t o t he Auto po sition.
Paper Handling 2-19 Caution: ❏ When printing on overlapp ing multipart forms, make sure that your software settings keep the printing entirel y within the printable area of the forms. Printing on the edge of a multipart form can damage the pri nt head.
2-20 Pape r Handling Caution: ❏ When printing on labels, make sure that y our software settings keep the printing entirely within the printable area. Printing on th e edge of a label can damage th e print head. For information about the printable area, see the paper specific a tions in App endix C.
Paper Handling 2-21 Follow these steps t o load single sheets from the pap er guide: 1. Make sure that th e printer i s off and t he paper guide is attached as descr ibed in Chapter 1. Then close the sprock et covers and push down th e sprocket lock l evers to lock t he sprocket uni ts in place.
2-22 Pape r Handling 4. Slide the edge gui de until it rests ag ainst the guide ma rk, as shown below. 5. Insert a sheet of paper, following the edge guide, unti l it meets resistance. B e sure to loa d your pape r printabl e side up and top edge f irst.
Paper Handling 2-23 After print i ng a sheet, the pri nter eject s the prin ted sheet onto the pape r guid e. If you are pri ntin g a mult iple-p age doc umen t, remove the pr inted sheet a nd insert a new sheet into the paper guide. The print er automaticall y advances the paper and resumes printing .
2-24 Pape r Handling Caution: ❏ When printing on mu ltipart forms, make sure that your software settings keep the printing entirely within the printable area of the forms. Printing on the edge of a multipart form ca n damage the prin t head. For inf ormation about the printable area, see the paper specifications in Appendix A.

2-28 Pape r Handling Switching to continuous paper To switch from si ngle sheets to contin uous paper, follow the steps below. 1. If necessary, press the Load/Ej ect button to e ject th e last printed single sheet.

(Press the Load/E ject button to l oad continuou s paper fro m the tract or or a single she et from the optiona l cut-sheet feeder.
2-30 Pape r Handling Note: ❏ Pressing the LF/FF [ ] button moves the loadin g position toward the top of the page when loading a sheet from the front (from the paper guide). Pressing the LF/FF [ ] bu tton moves the loading position toward the bottom of the page when loading a sheet from the rear (from the cut-sheet feeders or the tractor).
Paper Handling 2-31 Adjusting the tear-off position If your conti nuo us paper perfo ratio n i s not aligned wit h t he tear - off edge, you can use t he micro-adjust feat ure to move t he perforat ion to the t ear-of f positi on as fo llows: 1. Make sure both Tear Off lights ar e flashing (the paper is at the current tear-off positio n).

4-8 Changing Printer Set tings From the Print er’s Contr o l Panel Auto CR (carriage retur n) This sett ing is ava ilable o nly in IBM 2390 Pl us emulation mod e. When auto carri age r etur n is on, each line feed (LF) cod e or ESC J code is accompanied by a carriage ret urn code.
Changing Printer Settings From the Print er’s Control Panel 4-9 Manual feed wai t time This sets the amount of wa it time betwee n when paper i s inserted into the pa per guide and it is fed. I f the pape r feeds befo re you can adjust its posi tion to you r satisfaction, y ou can increase the wait time.
4-10 Changing Printer Set tings From the Prin ter’s Contr ol Panel 1. Make sur e paper is load ed and the p rinter is tur ned off. Caution: Whenever you turn off the printer, wait at least five secon ds before turning it back on; otherwise you may da mage the printer.
