Introd uction 2 1.0 I NTRODUCTION 1.1 General Description The Liebert NXL UPS provides continuous, high-qua lity AC power to your business-critical equip- ment, such as telecommunications and data proce ssing equipment.
Introd uction 3 1.2.2 Byp ass Mode When the Liebert NXL is in bypass mode, the load is directly supported by utility power and is with- out battery backup protection.
Introd uction 4 • Load Bus Synchronization —The Load Bus Sync (LBS) option keeps two independent UPS sys- tems (and therefore their critical load buses) in sync, even when the modules are operating on bat- teries or asynchronous AC source s. This means that critical load s connected to both load buses can switch seamlessly between the two.
Operation 5 2.0 O PERATION The Liebert NXL UPS is equipped with a microprocessor-based displa y touchscreen de signed for con- venient and reliable operat ion.

Operation 9 2.2 T ouchscreen Navigation 2.2.1 Main Display Screen Several menu items can be accessed fr om the main display screen (see Figure 3 ). These menu items are detailed in subsequent sections.
Operation 10 2.2.2 Configurations Menu Rating This menu item will display a popup showing the following parameters (see Figure 10 ). These parameters are entered during commiss ioning when th e UPS is installed.
Operation 11 User Settings System Settings These display se ttings can be change d from the to uchscreen. Press the box to the left of each parame - ter to bring a popup window that will al low the parameter to be changed.
Operation 12 Adjust able Setpoint s These warning and alarm settings can be changed fr om the touchscreen. Press the box to the left of each parameter to bri ng a popup wi ndow that will al low the parameter to be changed.
Operation 13 Battery Test • Auto Test—Enable/Disabl e (default: disabled) • Test Cycle, weeks—1 to 26 (default: 13 weeks) • Time of day, hh:mm—Set Hour and Minute; sets the start time of the automatic battery test • Start Date, mm dd, yyyyy—Set Month, Day and Year • Test Duration, minutes—Autom atic, 0.
Operation 14 Event Management This menu item permits changing how the Liebert NXL handles Alar ms, Faults and Status informa- tion. Each event can be configured for the following: • Latch (yes/no).
Operation 15 2.2.5 Shut down Menu This menu permits shutting down the UPS and indiv idual devices. Figure 15 Shut down menu Open Trap —Open the input trap filter Open MBD/BCB —Opens the associated MBD or BCB breaker UPS —Turns off inverter, rectifier and trips all bat tery breakers.
Operation 16 2.2.6 T ransfer Menu This menu permits switching between UPS and Bypa ss mode. A graph in the multipurpose window shows if the UPS is in synch wi th the bypass. If the UPS and bypass are in synch, pressing Bypass will switch the UP S to Bypass mode.
Operation 17 2.2.7 Battery Management Menu This menu permits configuring battery settings. Time Remaining Graph —Displays the time remainin g graph in the mu ltipurpose window; plot the battery voltage against elapsed time during a Battery Discharge Cycle (see Figure 19 ).

Operation 19 Clear Log —This command resets the Date of First Discharge Cycle. A di alog box will wa rn that the data will be permanently lost and shou ld downloaded before proceeding (see Figure 22 ). Figure 22 Battery cycle monitor—cle ar log 2.
Operation 20 2.3.2 OK to T ransfer The OK to Transfer st atus message will b e displa yed when the bypass line an d UPS output power are both available, their voltag e, frequency and phase synchronization are matched wi thin specifications, and the Static Switch Disconnects are closed (ON) .
Operation 21 2.3.3 Input Power Failure—Load on Battery If the utility AC p ower source fails or is outside the acceptable range, the battery plant becomes the power source for the UPS module inverters. The UP S continues to supply po wer to the critical load and also to the UPS controls.
Operation 22 2.3.4 Off Battery The battery plant can be disconnected from the UPS, if required for battery maintenance, by opening the module battery disconnect (MBD ) circuit br eaker.
Operation 23 2.3.6 Remote Emergency Power Off The Remote Emergency Powe r Off (REPO) mode will transfer the critical load to the bypass line and remove power from all UPS module components exce pt the controls, bypass circuit breaker and the static switch.
Operation 24 2.4.1 St artup Procedure If your installat ion includes a Maintenance Bypass, you may already be sup p lying power to the criti- cal load equip ment through the Maintenan ce Bypass. If there is no power to the critical load, apply power through the UPS bypass line per the following procedure.
Operation 25 e. The “Close CB1” message will appear. Close CB1 (see Figure 2 ) f. The “Press OK to Issue Rectifier On Command” message will appear. Press “OK” This will start th e UPS’ rectifier. Load is still on internal bypass. g. The “Press OK to Issue Inverter On Command” message ap pears.
Operation 26 2.4.2 Load T ransfer Procedures Changing the load from the UPS system to the UP S bypass is called a transfer. Chang ing the load from UPS bypass to the UPS system is called a retransfer. Note that the UPS system control logic can initiate automatic load transfer s and retransfers.
Operation 27 NOTICE Risk of equipment damage. The UPS system must be on internal bypass before performing the followin g procedures and op erating MIB or MBB, or dama ge to the UPS may occur and the critical load may be lost. Maintenance Byp ass Load T ransfers—If Load is on UPS Byp ass 1.
Operation 28 2.5 Shut down Procedures 2.5.1 Module Shut down Procedure Perform a Module Shutdo wn Procedure when you want to remove power from a UPS module . Read all wa rnings in 3.0 - Maintenance before performing any main tenance on your Liebert NXL UPS.
Operation 29 Figure 32 Current-versus-time cur ves of overload cap acity 2.6.2 Automatic T ransfers to Byp ass (Overload Conditi on) The UPS system wi ll initiate an au tomatic load transfer to the bypass line if a n overload condition exceeds the current-versus-ti me curve of overload capacity or if specified UPS system faults occur.
Operation 30 2.6.3 Automatic T ransfers to Byp ass, UPS System Fa ult s For specified UPS system faults, the control logic will initiate an automatic tran sfer to bypass fol- lowed immediately by a shutdown and isolation of the UPS system. The output, battery (MBD) and input circuit breakers are open.
Maintenance 31 3.0 M AINTENANCE 3.1 Safety Precautions Observe the safety precautions in Battery Cabinet Precautions inside the front cover. Observe ALL of the WARNING S be low before performing ANY main tenance on the UPS Syst em and associated equipment.
Maintenance 32 3.2 Liebert Services Startup, UPS maintenance, battery maintenance and training progra ms are available for the Liebert NXL UPS through your Lieb ert sales representative.
Maintenance 33 The UPS is designed for unattended operation, but does require some common-sense maintenance. • Keep good records —Troubl eshooting is easier if you have histori cal background. • Keep it clean —Maint ain the UPS free of dust and any moisture.
Maintenance 34 3.3.3 Limited Life Component s The Liebert NXL U PS has a design life well in excess of 10 years. Well-maint ained units can continue to provide economic benefits for 20 years or more. Long-life components are used in the UPS w herever practical and cost-effective.
Maintenance 35 3.4.1 Battery Safety Precautions Servicing of batteries should be performed or supe rvised by personnel know ledgeable of batte ries and the required precautions. Keep unauthorized person nel away from batteries. When replacing batteries, use the sa me number and type of batteries.
Maintenance 36 Because individu al battery characteri stics are not identical an d may change over time, the UPS mod- ule is equipped with circuitry to equalize battery cell voltages. This circuit increases charging voltage to maintain floode d type battery cells at full capacity.
Maintenance 37 Rack-Mounted Batteries If the UPS system uses a battery other than a fa ctory-supplied Matchi ng Battery Cabinet, perform maintenance on the battery as recommended in the battery manuf acturer’s maintenance manual, available on the manufacturer’s Web site.
Maintenance 38 3.6 Reporting a Problem If a problem occurs within the UP S, review all alarm messages alon g with other pertinent data. Con- tact Liebert Services at 1-800-LIEBERT to report a problem or to request assistance.

UPS Alarm and Status Messages 44 Batt Discharging The UPS is on battery. The most common reason for going to batte ry is a loss of rectifier input power (power outage). This alarm is self-clearing. When the condi tion is no longer present, the alarm and any con trol activity tied to the alarm reverts to normal.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 45 Batt Ovtemp Limit One or more of the Batte ry Temperature Sens ors is reporting a temper ature above the limit setpoint. There are tw o user-adjust able Battery Temperature Setpoints: Battery Over Temperature Warning an d Battery Overtemperature Limit.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 46 Batt Temp Imbalance With more than one Battery Temperature Sensor installed, the controls are detecting too great a temperature difference between the individual sensors. Press “SILENCE” to silence the audible alarm.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 47 Breaker Close Fail This is a summary event th at informs the user that a circuit breaker th at was either signaled to close or was manually closed failed to report a closed status. The Breaker Close Fail event indicates a mismatch between the expected state of a breaker and the reported state of the breaker.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 48 Byp Overload Ph C The critical load is greater than 110% whi le the UPS is on by pass. The c ontrols may shut the unit down if the overload condition doe s not clear within the allotted time. Allotted time is variable, and is inversely proportional to the amplitude of the overload, i.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 49 Controls Comm Fail The Controls Communication Failure event indicates a lo ss of communications between the Controls and Human Machine Interface (HMI). The Controls Communicati on Failure event is displayed when the HMI detects a loss of communication w ith Cont rols on the Control ler Area Networ k (CAN).
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 50 EPO Shutdown The UPS shuts down in response to an active Emergency Power Off (EPO) command. Press “SILENCE” to silence the audible alarm. Resolve the issue that precipitated the EPO. For safety, the UPS latches an EPO event.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 51 Equip Ovtemp Limit This summary event occurs when one or more internal temperatures have exceeded the maximum temp erature setpo int. This is the second of two over temperature alarms. The fi rst, “Equipment Overtemperature Warn ing,” sets when the detected temperature is near the limit.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 52 Excess Auto Rexfers The UPS has re-transferred too many times and is now locked on byp ass. The UPS attempts to perform an automatic transfer back to Inverter, if the reason for the transfer to bypass i s determined by the controls to be automatically recover able; for example, a temporary overload.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 53 Inp Phase Rotation The correct input phase rotation should be clockwise, or A-B-C. This alarm in dicates the sensed input phase rota tion is counter-clockwise.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 54 Input Current Limit An active Input Curre nt Limit alarm means the detected input current (RMS) exceeds the limit setpoint (default is 125%). Th is may be normal depending on various operating condi tions, such as input voltage level, output load level, and whether the batteries ha ve recently di scharged.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 55 Inv Overload Ph B An overload conditio n is active on B phase. B phase load condi tion exceeds 105%. A countdown timer is displayed on the One-Lin e Display in response to this alarm, and ind icates the time remaining until a transfer to bypass occurs.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 56 LBS Inhibited With LBS operation enabled, conditions requ ired to allow LBS operation are no t met. Voltage or Frequency diff eren ces sensed by the LBS control are preventing the ability of LBS to function correctly. This alarm is self-clearing.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 57 Low Power Factor The outpu t power factor is low. The output power factor is less than 70% leading or lagging. A simplified explana tion of power factor is the ratio of energy being supplied to energy being used by the load.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 58 Manual Xfer Inhibi t This summary event means the conditions required to perfo rm a manual transfer to bypass are not met (Inverter must be in sync with bypass).
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 59 Multiple Fan Fa il This summary event is active when more than one fan has failed. Press “SILENCE” to silence the audible alarm. Press “RESET” to clear the alarm. If the alar m will not cl ear, contact yo ur factory- authorized service provider.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 60 Rectifier Fa ult This summary event indicates a potentially serious condition in the Rectifie r circuit. The controls respond to this by turning off the Rectifier, opening th e input filter contactor, and placing the UPS on battery operation.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 61 Regen Terminate d Regeneration Mode is a service mode that is normally controlled by the service technician. Regeneration Mode Status or Alarm messages are generally intended for the se rvice person. This status message informs the user that Regen Mode is no longer active.
UPS Alarm and Status Messages 62 Service Code Active This event is for info rmational pu rposes, and informs the user that Service Code is currently running. This status message is se lf-clearing. When the condition is n o longer present, the a larm and any control activity tied to the alarm reverts to normal.
