3 I-5. Safety Information In order to ensure the saf e operation of the device and it s users, please read and act in accordance with the fol lowing safety in structions. 1. The device is desi gned for indoor use only; do n ot place it outdo or s. 2. Do not place th e device in or near hot/humid pl aces, such as a kitchen or bathroom.
4 II. Installation II -1. In stallation 1. Plug the EW-7438 RPn Air into a power socket . The LED will flash red while the system is booting up. The device is ready when th e LED di splays on ( red ). 2. Use a Wi-Fi device (e.g. computer, tabl et, smartphone) to search for a Wi -Fi networ k wi th the SSID “ Edi ma xEXT.
5 3. O pen a web brows er and if you do not automatically arrive at the “Get Started” screen shown below , enter the URL htt p://edimaxext .setup and click “Get Started” to begin the setup process. If you cannot access http://edimaxext.setup , please make sure your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address.
6 5. Select your Wi-Fi n etwork from the list and ent er the security key/password. You can a lso enter a new Wi -Fi netw ork name (SSID) if you wish. Click “Next” to conti nue. By default, the Wi- Fi extender’s new wireless networ k name ( SSID) is your existing router/access point’s SSID + _2EX.
7 8. Please wait a moment unt il the extender is ready. 9. A final congratulations scr een wil l indicate that setup is complete. The EW -7438RPn Air is working and ready for us e - the LED should displ ay on or flashing blue de pending on you r signal strengt h.
8 Android: iOS: 10. Please close the browse r window. Y ou can now connect to t he extender ’s new SS ID on a wir eless d evice withi n range such as a comput er, smartphone or tabl et. The password for your Wi- Fi extender’s SSID is the same as for your router’s SSID.
9 II -2. WPS Setup If your wireless ro uter/access point supports WPS (Wi -Fi P rotected Setup ) then you can use t his method to s etup your wireles s extender.
10 II -3. Reset to Factory Default Setti ngs If you experience problems wit h your extender o r if you want to change t he extender to a diffe rent operating mode, you can reset the device bac k to its factory settings. This resets all settings back to d efault.
11 III. Browser Based Configuration Interface You can use the br owser based configu ration interface to confi gure advanced settings. Please ensure that your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address. Refer to V-1. Configuring your IP address f or more information.

13 III-2. Save Settings 1. After you make any changes to th e EW -7438RPn Air ’s sett ings, please click “APPLY”. 2. Then, select “CO NTINUE” to save changes but not apply them yet , or select “APPLY” to r estart the EW - 7438RPn Air and bring the chang es into effect.

15 Uptime Displays the total time since the devi ce was turned on. Hardware Version Displays the hard ware version. Firmware Version Displays the firmw are version. Mode Displays the opera ting mode. Wireless Scheduli ng Displays whether wireless schedul ing is on or off.
16 Clients” to di splay a new window showing information about wireless client s. Status Displays the current connection stat us of the EW -7438RPn Air. Signal Strength Displays the wirele ss signal strength from your router/access point to the EW -7438RPn Air.
17 III-3-2. iQ Setup You can run the set up wizard again to reconfi gure the basic setting s of the device. Please refer ba ck to II -1. Installatio n for guidance. III-3 . WPS Settings Wi -Fi Protected Setup is a simple way to estab lish connections betwe en WPS compatible devices.
18 Self PIN Code Displays the WPS PI N code of the d evice. Configuration Mode Device is as an AP The configuration mode of th e device’s WPS setting is displ ayed here. “Registrar” means the device acts as an access point for a wireless client to connect t o and the wireless client(s) will follow the device’s wireless s ettings.
19 III-4. Advanced Settin gs The “ Advanced Setting s ” page allows you to adjust the power output and LED operation of th e EW -7438RPn Ai r. The submenu opti ons listed under “Advanced Settings” al low you to c onfigu re security, scheduli ng, guest network and vario us administrati ve and management funct ions.
20 III-4-1. WLAN Security The security/encrypt ion type and password fo r your wireless ext ender is t he same as your existing router/access point . On this page you can set a n ew SSID for your extender and choose to broad cast or hide the ext ender’s S S ID.
21 III-4-2. Scheduling Setti ng The “Scheduling S ettings” page enab les you to configur e the EW -743 8RPn Air’s scheduling functi on, along with the ti me & date setting s. The scheduli ng function allows you t o schedule th e extender’s Wi -Fi a nd LED on or off according to your preference.
22 Add Click to add a new schedule in a new window (see below). Edit Edit an existing schedule in a new window. Delete Delete the specified schedul e. Add When you click “Add” to add a new schedule, a n ew window will open as shown below: Schedules can be set individually by day or to occur every day.
23 1. Enter a name for t he schedule in t he “schedule de scription” box in the top right corner. 2. Specify a st art and end time (hours an d minutes ) and day (or select “everyday”) for th e schedule using t he drop-d own men us.
24 III-4-3. Guest Netwo rk You can use an ad ditional “guest” wireless network s o guest users can en joy Wi -Fi conne ctivity without accessing your primary netw ork. The guest network can also b e used as a parent al control function, al lowing you to moderate your chil d’s Internet access.
25 Channel Number Channel number f or the guest netw ork is the same as the main SSID and cann ot be adjust ed independently. Encryption Enable or disable encryption fo r the guest network. Pre-shared Key When encryption is enabl ed, enter a pre-shared key (pa ssword) for your g uest network.
26 III-4-4. Administration U tility You can change the passwo rd used to logi n to the browser -based configuration int erface here. It is advised to do so for security purposes . Y ou can also configure the EW -7438RPn Air ’s IP address. Please make a note of the new password.
27 2.4GHz To have your wirel ess router automa tic ally assign an I P address to your extender (recommended) , select “Obt ain an IP address aut omatically”. To assign an IP address to you r extender manua lly, select “Use the foll owing IP address”.
28 III-4-5. Configuration Too ls The “Configurati on Tools” menu all ows you to backup the EW - 7438RPn Air ’s settings, restore the setting s to a previous version or restore the EW -7438RPn Air back to its factory d efault state. You can also upg rade the firmwa re, reboot the device and export the sys tem log.
29 Upgrade Firmwar e You can upgrade the syste m firmware to a mo re recent version. You ca n download the latest f irmware from the Edimax website . After the upgrad e, the system will restart. Do not switch off or disconnect the device during a firmware upgrade, as this could damage the device.
30 Reboot In the event that the extender mal functions or is not re sponding, then it is recommended that you restart t he device. Rebooting the EW-7438RPn Air will not affect the current configuration/settings of the device. Apply Click “Apply” to reboot th e device.
31 System Log You can export the system log to a se parate file if you requ ire. Export system log Click to open a new wind ow and sel ect a location to save th e log file.
32 IV. EdiRange App The EdiRange app is a free smartphone app from which you can manage the extender’s functions an d check your l ocal Wi- Fi environment. Please ensure that your smartphone/tablet is connected to your extender’s Wi -Fi (SSID). IV - 1.
33 3. Enter the username and passwo rd (d efault username: admin d efault password: 1234 ). The admin password is the same password used for the browser based configuration interface. It is recommended that you change the password from the default “1234”.
34 IV -2. Main Menu After you log in, the “St atus” page wil l be displayed. You can se e the extender status, SSID na me, and guest netwo rk and schedule sta tus here. Use the menu of icons across the bot tom of the screen to naviga te around the app.
35 IV - 3. Good Night Mode Good Night Mode wil l put the extender to “sleep” (swit ch off Wi -Fi and LE D) for a specified number of hou rs. Enter the numbe r of hours and click “Yes” to activate Good Night Mode. Your mobile device will be disconnected from the extender during sleep mode since Wi-Fi is disabled.
36 IV - 5. Admin You can change the extende r’s admininst rative password on the Admin page. This is the password t o login to the EdiRang e app and the browse r based configuration int erface.
37 V. Appendix V- 1. Configuring your IP a ddress For first time access to the U RL http: //edimaxext.setu p on a compute r please ensure your comput er is set to us e a dynamic IP addre ss. This means y our computer can obtai n an IP address aut omatically from a DHCP server.

66 V-1- 3. How to Find Your Ne twork Security Key To find your netw ork security key, please foll ow the instructions ap propriate for your operating system. If you are using Windows XP or earlier, please contact your ISP or router manufacturer to find your network security key.
67 4. You should see the profil e of your Wi -Fi network in the list . Right click on your Wi- Fi netwo rk and then click on “P roperties”. 5. Click on the “S ecurity” tab , and then check the box l abeled “Show characters”. This wil l show your network se curity key.

80 V-3. Glossary Default Gateway ( Wireless bridge ): Every non- access point IP device needs to configure a defaul t gateway’s IP a ddress. When the d evice sends out an IP packet, if the destina tion is not on the same netwo rk, the device has t o send the packet to its defa ult gateway, which will th en send it out towards the destination.
