Display The display shows me ssages describin g the current state of the printer an d indicating possible printer problems that must be resolved. The top line of the display is the hea der line. It will display the current status and the Supplies (Warnings) status.

Repeating jams or jam messages can be caused by any of the following: • Faulty/contaminated pick sol enoids or worn cams of the solenoids.

Print quality service checks Note: Ensure the cover closes tightly. A gap in the open ing may allow light to expose the photoconductor, resulting in a ‘dirty’ print. Extreme environmental cond itions, temperatures, and hu mi dity will affect the print quality.

Always verify the same results from a different print cartridge assembly and de veloper before proceeding. The printer is on and indicates ready, but nothing prints. • Make sure the parallel or USB cable is not damaged and is firmly plu gged into the connector on the back of the printer. • Make sure the toner cartridge assembly is installed p roperly. • Print the menu page fo und under Utilities.

Printing menus To print a listing of the states and setti ngs of the printer: 1. At the Ready prompt, press under Menu until Utilities appears.
Configuration menu (CONFIG MENU) Entering Configuration Menu 1. Turn off the printer. 2. Press and hold and . 3. Turn on the printer. 4. Release the buttons when Performing Self Test displays.
Diagnostic aids 3-3 Reset photoconductor maintena nce counter (Reset PC Cnt) The reset photoconductor maintenance counter resets the p hotoconductor kit page counter and clears any warnings or photoconductor exhausted me ssages. This operation sho uld be performed only after a n ew photoconductor unit ha s been installed.
Demo Mode This setting contains a built-in d emonstration mode. The settings allow yo u to turn the Demo Mode Off (default) or On . While Demo Mode is se t, the printer will st art in Demo Mode until you change the setti ng. Note: While Demo Mode is set to On , only demonstration fi les can print.

Registration The Registration menu settings adjust th e black plane’s margins. T o set print registration, select REGISTRATION from the Diagnostics menu. The following will display: Note: Pressing will display one margin setting per li ne below the REGISTRATION he ader.

The Quic k Test page consists of the following: • Alignment diamonds • Horizontal lines used for skew adjustment • General device information (current page count, installe d memory, etc.
Hardware tests This setting contains the fo llowing tests: • LCD Test • Button Test • DRAM Test Press o r to scroll through the Hardware Tests menu, and then press to select the desired test. LCD Test Once the LCD Te st setting is selected, th e printer automatically performs the operator panel test.

Diagnostic aids 3-11 Output bin tests The Output bin test s setting is used to test the printer’s output bins and its sen sors. Feed Tests This test verifies that the media from the printer’s default input source feeds to the specific output bin. Press to select Single, or press and to select Continuous.
Printer setup Printer Setup displays the following sele ctions: • Defaults (U.S.*, Non-U.S.) • Page Count • Perm Page Count • Serial Number • Engine Setting (1 through 4) • Model Name • .
Diagnostic aids 3-13 Service Tag (only on some printers) The service tag number can only b e viewed and cannot be changed. 1. Select Service Tag from the PRINTER SETUP menu. 2. Press Back to return to PRINTER SETUP . Engine Setting 1 through 4 Warning: Do not change these settings unless requested to do so by your next level of support.
Print Contrast The print contrast can be adjusted to Lo w , Medium , or High . The default setting is Me dium. Charge Roll The charge roll can be adj usted to Low , Medium , or High . The default se tting is Medium. Gap Adjust Adjusts the minimum gap betwe en sheets during printin g.

Printhead assembly el ectronic adjustment A step-by-step process to ali gn a new pri nthead. Note: Before aligning the printhead electroni cally, first align the printhead mechani cally, if needed. See “Printhead assembly mechanic al a djustment” on page 3-17 1.
Diagnostic aids 3-17 Printhead assembly mechanical adjustment A printhead needs to be correctly po sitioned after it has been removed. Use a pe ncil to mark the screw loca tions of the old printhead on the metal frame. Align the new prin thead relative to the location of the old printhe ad.
7. If the grid lines of the right fl ap align below the corresponding lin es on the left flap, then adjust the printh ead clockwise relative to the pri nter and recheck. (Se e the left side of the figure below.) If the grid line s of the left flap align below the corresponding lines of the righ t side, then ad just the pr inthead counterclockwise.
Repair information 4-1 4. Repair information Warning: Read the following before hand ling electronic parts. Handling ESD-sensitive parts Many electronic products use parts that are known to be sensiti ve to electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Removal procedures Note: • Remove the toner cartridge and medi a tray before removing other printe r parts. The to ner cartridge should be protected from ligh t wh ile out of the printe r. • We recommend disconnecting all exte rnal cables from the printer to prevent damag e during service.
Repair information 4-3 ACM pick tire roller removal 1. Place the printer on its side. Note: Be careful to not mar t he finish of the printer. 2. Open the duplex jam door just fa r enough to pull out the ACM pick tires. Warning: Open the duplex door only far enough to remove the ACM pick tires.
4. Remove the ACM pick tire roller (A). Note: • If the left hub is gray, then disconnect the old ri ght and left tire/hub assemblies from the ACM, and re place with the new right and left tire/hub assemb lies. • If the left hub is bl ack, then remo ve the old right and left tires from the ACM h ubs, and replace with the ne w tires.
Repair information 4-5 Bezel removal 1. Open the front access door. 2. Flex the top of th e bezel, and disconnect the latch (A) from the upper front cover.
Controller board removal Warning: • Always touch a ground before touching the board. • Handle the board carefully by the edge s. • Never replace the operato r panel and controlle r b oard without a successful POR in between. • Never replace the operator panel and th e controller boa rd at the same time.
Repair information 4-7 3. Disconnect all of the cables from the controller board. Note: A drip guard (B) has been added bel ow the controller bo ard. The drip guard may need to be removed to access to the controller board. 4. Remove the five screws (C) from the controller board.
Cover open sensor 1. Remove the right side cover. See “Righ t side cover as sembly removal” on page 4-58 . 2. Disconnect the cable (A) from the con troller board. 3. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw (B) holding the sensor. 4. Remove the cover open sensor.

Fan removal 1. Remove the right side cover. See “Righ t side cover as sembly removal” on page 4-58 . 2. Disconnect the cable (A) from the controller board, and remove the two screws (B) holding the fan to the right side frame.

6. Disconnect the MPF from the lower front cover. 7. Disconnect the fuser link (A) from the front access door. A 4-18.

Fuser removal 1. Remove the rear exit guide. See “Rear exit guide as sembly with sensor and reversing solenoid removal” on page 4-56 . 2. Remove the two screws (A). 3. Partially pull the fuser forward for better access. 4. Push in on the cable connector cover (B), and re move.

7. Disconnect the exit sensor cable (E) from the controller board. 8. Remove the fuser. Note: • Be careful to not damage the gears during the fuser installation.
Repair info rmation 4-23 Left side cover removal Note: • Leave the front door closed when removing the left side cover. • Make sure that the fuser cables are out of the way when removing the left side cover. 1. Remove the paper tray. 2. Remove the screw (A) from the rear left side of the printer.
4. Swing the cover open, and lift to remove the left side cover. Note: There are two tabs on the top of the left side cover. Do not swing the left side cover open too far, or the tabs will be damaged.
Repair info rmation 4-25 Lower front cover removal 1. Open the lower front cover. 2. Disconnect the MPF pins (A) from the right and left sides of the lower front cover. Note: The picture bel ow shows the E260d, E260dn printe r. Th e lower front cover removal is the same for all models.
Installation no te: Use a flathead scre w driver to press in on the door mount (B) while pullin g on the front access door to connect the cover to the hinge (C).
Repair info rmation 4-27 LVPS/HVPS removal 1. Remove the rear door cover. See “Rear door and re ar cover removal” on page 4-5 4 . 2. Remove the left side cover. See “Left side cover removal” on page 4-23 . 3. Place the printer on its top with the rear facing you.
6. Remove the two screws (C) from the right rear foo t, and the four screws (D) from the LVPS/HVPS shield. 7. Lift the LVPS/HVPS, and disconn ect the three cables (E).
Repair info rmation 4-29 Note: Squeeze the cl ip to remove the cables from their connectors (F). 8. Disconnect the transfer roll cable (G). 9. Lift and remove the LVPS/HVPS.
