A BOUT T HIS G UIDE Congratulati ons on your purchase of th e DSS-8+. This de vice integrates 100Mbp s Fast Ethernet and 10Mbps Ethernet network capabilities in a highly flex ible desktop package. Purpose The purpose of t his manual is to show you how to i nstall and configure your DSS-8+.
I NTRODUCTION This chapter descri bes the features o f the DSS-8+ and some background i nformati on about Ether net/Fast Ethe rnet swit ching technology. Fast Ethernet Technology The growing i mport ance of LA Ns and the i ncreasing c omplexi ty of desktop com puting applicat ions are fuel ing the need fo r high performance network s.
Ethernet packets at the M AC addres s level o f the Ethe rnet prot ocol transmitting am ong connected Et hernet or Fast Et hernet LAN segments. Switching is a cost-effective way of increasing the total network capacity available to users on a local area network.
Features The DSS-8+ was desi gned for easy i nstallation a nd high p erformance in an environmen t where traffic on the networ k and the number of users increase continuously. The DSS-8+ with its small, com pact size was specifically designed for small t o middle w orkgroups.
Store and forward switching scheme capability. As the result of complete frame checking and error frame filtering, this scheme prevents error packages fro m transm itting among segments.
Unpacking and Setup This chapter provides unpacking an d setup inform ation for the DSS-8+. Unpacking Open the box and ca refully unpac ks its conte nts. The box s hould contain the followin g items: ♦ One DSS-8+ ♦ One external power adapter ♦ One pair of Stacking Brackets ♦ This User’s Guide.
I DENTIFYING E XTERNAL C OMPONENTS This section i dentifies all the major exte rnal compone nts of the DSS-8+. Both the front and rear pane ls are shown follow ed by a description of each panel fe ature. The indicator panel is described in detail in the next chapter.
duplex (FDX) mode. Otherwise, it is blinking when collisions are occurring on the respective port. 100M Link/Activity, 10M L ink/Activity (100M LINK /ACT (green) , 10LINK/ACT (amber) ) This indicato.
another hub or an Ethernet switch, y ou should use a crossover cable, or make the connecti on using the MDI-X jack (described below). ♦ Uplink Jack(s) (MDI-II): Use this jack to connect statio ns to the hub.
C ONNECTING T HE DSS-8+ This chapter descri bes how to co nnect the DSS-8+ to your Fast Ethernet networ k. In each of the following figures, the DSS-8+ is shown. PC to DSS-8+ A PC can be connected to DSS-8+ via a two-pair Categor y 3, 4, 5 UTP/STP straight cable.
A. 10BASE-T Hub For a 10BASE -T hub, the DSS-8+ LED indicators s hould lig ht up as the following: “Full-Duplex/Collision ” indicator is OFF. “100LINK/ACT,10LINK/ACT LED” indicat or is light am ber.
A. Using straight cable When using straight cable, this is done from the uplink (MDI-I I) port of the DSS- 8+ (DSS-8+ A) to any of the 10 Mbps or 10 0Mbps (MD I- X) port of the other switch (swi tch B) or other devices.
I NSTRUCTIONS FOR U SE OF S TACKING B RACKETS First, make sure you have one pair of stacking brackets for each device. Next, slide one bracket onto each e nd of the device as shown in the diagram below.
RJ-45 P IN S PECIFICA TION When connecting you r DSS-8+ to anoth er switch, a bridge or a hub , a modified crossove r cable is necessary . Plea se review these pr oducts for matchi ng cable pin assignm ent.
