2 I NTRODUCTION This chapter describe s the features of the DES-1024D and some background informati on about Ethernet/ Fast Ethernet s witching tec hnology. Fast Ethernet Technology Ethernet, along with its speedier coun terpart Fast Ethernet, is the most popular netw orking standa rd in use today.
3 Switching Technology Switching is a cost-effective way of i ncreasing the total network capacity available to users on a L AN. If an Et hernet netw ork begins t o display symptom s of congestio n, l.
4 Switching L AN technolo gy is a marked im provement ove r the pre vious generation of netw ork hubs and bridges, w hich were characteri zed by higher latencies. Rout ers have also been used to se gment local area netw orks, but the cost of a router, the setup and maint enance re quired, ma ke routers relatively impractical.
