Agilent AN 372-2 Battery T esting Application Note An electronic load can be used to discharge batteries of various chemistries to determine actual capacity , capacity retention, and internal impedance.

3 Sev en standard t est procedures 1 are used t o verify cer tain electrical char- acteristics of secondar y batt eries: 1. Rated capacity 2. Capacity retention 3. Effective internal resistance 4. Discharge rate effect on capacity at –20°C 5. Discharge rate effect on capacity at 23°C 6.
4 Capacity varies with the rate of dis- charge as sho wn in Figure 3. Testing for how discharge rate af f ects capacity is discussed later in more detail. Generally , low er discharge rates o ver longer periods of time yield higher values of tot al capacity.
5 Effective Internal Impedance Batter y impedance is dependent on temperature, its st ate of charge, and the load frequency. The effectiv e internal im pedance is low er f or a full y charged batter y than it is f or a dis- charged one.
6 Miscellaneous T ests In addition to t he tests already men- tioned, there are also other miscella- neous tests per f ormed on nick el- cadmium batteries.
7 From the various tests described so far , w e can see some common requirements for test equipment. All the tests require a discharge cycle using a constant current. A const ant discharge cur rent cannot be att ained with a simple resist or because the batter y voltage changes as current is drawn from it.
