7 Removing Unit From Carton • Remove staples, break glue on t op flaps, or cut tape at carton end and peel along top flap to open carton. • Remove loose parts if included wit h unit (i.e., owner's manual, etc.) . • Cut along dotted line s and lay carton down flat.
8 Attaching Starter Rope The rope guide is already at tached to the right si de of the upper handle of y our mower. See Figure 5. • With the spark pl ug wire disconnec ted and grounded , hold the blade contr ol handle again st the upper han dle, and pul l starter rope ou t of the engine.
9 Know Your L awn Mower Read this owner ’ s manual and safety rules before operatin g y our lawn mower. C ompare the illustrat ions in Figure 10 with your lawn mower to familiarize yourself with the location of various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future r eference.
10 Stopping Engine • Release blade control handle t o stop the engine and the blade. • Disconnect spark plug wire and move away from spark plug to prevent accidental starting. WARNING: Before using your lawn mower, again refer to the safety rules on pages 3-5 of this manual.
11 • Pull rope with a rapid, continuo us, full arm stroke. Keeping a firm grip on t he recoil starter, let the rope return t o the start er slowly. Using Yo ur Lawn Mower Your mower is designed to operate as a mulching or a side discharge unit. • For converting from a mulcher to a side discharge unit, refer t o instructions on page 8.
12 General Recommenda tions • Always observe safety rul es when performing any maintenance. • The wa rranty on this lawn mow er does n ot cover items that have been sub jected to operator abuse or neglig ence. To rec eive full valu e from the warra nty, op erato r must main tain t he lawn mow er as ins tructed in this man ual.
13 Engine Oi l • Only use high quality deterg ent oil rated with API service clas sification SF, SG or SH. Select the oil ’ s viscosit y grade according to your expected operating t emperature. Refer to page 10 of this manual for viscosity chart. • Stop engine and wait s everal minutes before checking oil level.
14 Blade Care Periodicall y inspect the blade adapter for cracks, especially if you strike a foreign ob ject. Replace when necessary. WARNING: When inspecting t he cutting blade, protect hands b y using heavy gloves or a rag to grasp the cutting blade.
15 Servicing Blade To Remove Blade • Remove the bolt and blade bell support which hold the blade and adapter to t he engine crankshaft. See Figure 16.
16 Engine Sp eed WARNING: Overspeeding engine above the factory set ting can be dang erous . Do not attempt to inc rease engine speed or it may result in personal injury.
17 STORAGE Prepare your lawn mower for storage at the end of the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 days or more. Store the mower in a clean, dry area . Mower • Clean underside of the mower following instructions in the Maintenan ce section of this manual.
18 Oil cylinder bore After you hav e drained the fuel tank, pr otect the inside of the engi ne as follows: • Remove spark plug, pour approximately one ounce (30 ml) of engine oil int o spark pl ug hole, and crank slowly to distribute oil. WARNING: Avoi d spr ay from spark plug hole when cranking the engine slowly.
