4 Chapter 1 Intr oducing the DIRECTV System W elcome to the Sony brand DIRECTV System, the ultimate digital entertainment experience. Read this chapter for an overview of features of the system and to check the carton contents of the Digital Satellite Receiver .
5 Package Contents Check to make sure you’ve r eceived the following items in the Digital Satellite Receiver ’s carton: * RF Antenna and S-V ideo cable are not included with SA T -B3. SA T -A4 includes the RM-Y800 remote contr ol shown above; SA T -B3 includes the RM-Y139 remote contr ol shown on page 8.
6 Inserting Batteries into the Remote Contr ol Before you can use the r emote control, you must first insert the supplied batteries. If you want to use this remote contr ol to operate other video components, such as a TV or cable box, you must also program the r emote as described in the Appendix on page 85.
7 Chapter 2 Using Basic Functions Y ou can start watching programs using just a few buttons on the remote contr ol. Here’s an overview of the buttons you’ll use most often. Remote Control for Model SA T -A4 See Also q Pages 9–10 for a quick start to using the program guide and the Station Index.

9 Using a Progr am Guide The program guide displays the pr ogramming that’s available from your program pr oviders. 1 Press the GUIDE button to bring up the Custom Guide. 2 Move the highlight to the name of the program you want. Y ou’ll hear the audio and see the video (in the background) of each program as they ar e highlighted.
10 Using the Station Index The Station Index lets you select a program fr om a grid of station logos and call letters. Note Pressing EXIT r emoves all on-screen displays. Also, you may need to change to another station if a message appears, which requests that you pr ess the button to purchase the pr ogram, etc.
11 Chapter 3 Connecting Y our DIRECTV System Read this chapter to set up your Digital Satellite Receiver for the first time, or to add or remove audio or video components connected to your system. Overview Y ou can connect the Digital Satellite Receiver in a variety of configurations.
12 TV Only TV With RF Connector Only Refer to the illustration below . 1 Connect the RG-6 cable from the Satellite Antenna’s LNB to the Digital Satellite Receiver ’s SA TELLITE IN jack. 18 Connecting the IR Blaster SA T -A4 receiver is pictured, but connections are identical for SA T -B3. The IR Blaster works with the Digital Satellite Receiver ’s T imer function to automatically start and stop the recor ding function of your VCR. 1 Connect the IR Blaster to the Digital Satellite Receiver ’s VCR CONTROL jack.
19 Setting Up the RF Antenna (SA T -A4 Only) The RF (radio frequency) antenna enables the r emote control to operate the Digital Satellite Receiver even if the Digital Satellite Receiver is located in another room or is placed behind a cabinet door . Note Y ou must set up the RF antenna if you plan on using the RF feature.
20 Setting Up Y our DIRECTV System Viewing Satellite Pr ograms 1 T urn on the TV , and then set the TV’s line input to the Digital Satellite Receiver . (For example, set the TV to channel 3 or 4, if you used an RF connection; or set to VIDEO1, etc., if you used an A/V connection.

23 Using the On-Screen Displays: Highlight and Select All of the features and functions of the Digital Satellite Receiver can be operated using a simple, two-step process: Highlight and Select.
24 Displaying the Progr am Guide Y ou can select programs using the CH+ and CH- buttons, or you can enter the station number directly using the 0-9 buttons.
25 F eatures of the Progr am Guide When you select a guide from the Main Menu or pr ess the GUIDE button on the remote, a pr ogram guide appears, similar to the following: Program guides, such as the .
26 Moving Thr ough the Program Guide The on-screen pr ogram guides are displayed only one page at a time. Because the program guide usually contains many pages, you need to move through the guide to see mor e of the programs contained in the guide. Y ou can move by scrolling, paging, and direct station tuning.
27 Displaying F avorite Stations T o see your favorite stations at the top of the progr am guide: q Press the F A VORITE button. Pressing the F A VORITE button repeatedly cycles through the stations currently set for the five Favorite Station Guides (F A VORITE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), and then back to the normal guide.
28 Selecting a Progr am from the Guide For all programs except pay per view (PPV), you can select a pr ogram from the guide just by pr essing the button. If the pr ogram is currently showing, the guide disappears and the pr ogram you selected appears.
29 Selecting a Category List The Category List displays programs alphabetically by pr ogram title, as opposed to the Guide format, which sorts the programs numerically by station number . A sample Movies List is shown below . T o display a Category List, select MOVIES LIST from the Main Menu.
30 Selecting a Different Category Guide or List Y ou can use the SELECT GUIDE and SELECT LIST options in the Main Menu to select subsets of the Master Guide in either the Guide or List format. 1 Press the MENU button to bring up the Main Menu. 2 Select CA TEGOR Y GUIDE or CA TEGOR Y LIST from the Main Menu.
31 Selecting a Guide Time The TIME option lets you select from a list of futur e program guides. T o select a future pr ogram guide: 1 Select TIME from the Category Guide scr een. 2 Select the time you want to display. 3 Select OK to display the selected program guide, or select dif ferent options for guide, category , or subcategory .
32 Selecting a Guide Subcategory The SUBCA TEGORY option lets you select from a list of program guide subcategories, based on the selected program category . Note Y ou cannot select SUBCA TEGORIES if CA TEGOR Y is set to ALL. T o select a progr am guide subcategory: 1 Select SUBCA TEGORY from the Category Guide screen.
33 Using the Station Index The Station Index is an on-screen display that contains the station logo (or call letters) of all the stations in the system. T o display the Station Index: q Press the button on the remote control. The Station Index appears.
34 Displaying F avorite Stations in the Station Index T o display your favorite stations on the top row of the Station Index: q Press the F A VORITE button. Pressing the F A VORITE button repeatedly cycles through the five Favorite Station Guides. Note See page 37 for instructions on setting up your favorite stations.
35 Setting Up the Timer Y ou can select from two ways to automate VCR r ecording of programs: q Setting the T imer and then setting your VCR timer . q Setting the T imer and using the Sony IR Blaster to automatically control the VCR (see “Connecting the IR Blaster” on page 18, and “VCR Recording” on page 66 for details).
36 Setting the Daily/W eekly Timer T o set the timer for every day or for the same day(s) every week: 1 In step 4 (page 35), move the highlight down repeatedly to select one of the DA Y options, which are displayed in the following sequence: Current Date à D AIL Y à MON-FRI à EVER Y SA T .
37 Using the F avorite Station Guides The Favorite Station Guide is a program guide that includes up to seven of your favorite stations. Y ou can create up to five Favorite Station Guides: F A VORITE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Setting Up and Using the F avorite Station Guides T o set up the F avorite Station Guide: 1 Press the F A VORITE button.
38 3 T o assign a station to the flashing Favorite Station button, do one of the following: q Select it from the station list by highlighting it and then pressing the button. q Enter the station number (such as 100), using the 0-9 buttons on the remote.
39 T o set other F avorite Station buttons: q Repeat steps 2 and 3. T o clear a F avorite Station button setting: q Overwrite the setting by repeating steps 2 and 3.
40 Displaying the Progr am Banner The program banner pr ovides useful information about the program you’re curr ently watching. Note Before you can bring up the pr ogram banner , you must first clear the program guide from your TV scr een. Pressing EXIT turns off any on-screen displays.
41 Using the DISPLA Y Featur e Y ou can use the DISPLA Y button to change the appearance of the on- screen displays. The chart below illustrates how the DISPLA Y button toggles through the three types of displays of Pr ogram Guides (and Lists), Station Index, and Favorite Station Guide.

43 Chapter 5 Using the Options Menu Read this chapter to get information about using the Options Menu to customize the setup of the on-screen displays, r eview and cancel your purchases, and r ead mail messages that have been sent to you. Overview This chapter describes how to: q Check and cancel pay per view programs you’ve or dered (page 45).
44 Displaying the Options Menu T o bring up the Options Menu: 1 Press the MENU button to bring up the Main Menu. 2 Select OPTIONS MENU. The Options Menu appears.
45 Checking and Cancelling PPV Purchases Use the Review/Cancel Purchases scr een to see a record of r ecent purchases you’ve made thr ough your Digital Satellite Receiver . Y ou can also use this screen to cancel pay per view (PPV) pr ograms you’ve order ed, but haven’t yet watched.
46 Setting Display Options The Set Display Options screen allows you to customize the look of the on-screen displays and to select how you want the JUMP button to function (Standard or Jump Loop). T o bring up the Set Display Options screen: 1 Select DISPLA Y OPTIONS from the Options Menu.
47 Setting the Station Order The ST A TION ORDER option lets you change the order in which stations are displayed in the pr ogram guides to alphabetical or numerical. The default setting is NUMERICAL. 1 Select ST A TION ORDER from the Set Display Options screen.
48 Using the Jump Loop F eature Standard J ump vs . Jump Loop Mode When the Digital Satellite Receiver is set to Standard Jump mode, pressing the JUMP button toggles back and forth between the two most recently selected stations.
49 Setting Locks and Limits The Locks and Limits feature gives you contr ol over the use of your system. Y ou can restrict program viewing by cost, ratings, and station. Y ou can also set a lock to prevent the or dering of pay per view programs. T o display the Locks and Limits screen: 1 Select LOCKS AND LIMITS from the Options Menu.
50 Setting a Spending Limit T o set a spending limit: 1 Select SPENDING LIMIT from the Set Locks and Limits scr een. 2 Enter a spending limit, using the 0-9 buttons to enter the dollar value. Then press the button. 3 Select another lock or limit to set, or go to step 4.
51 Setting the P ay P er View Lock T o set the pay per view lock: 1 Select P A Y PER VIEW from the Set Locks and Limits scr een. 2 Select LOCKED to prevent PPV pr ogram purchases. Select UNLOCKED to allow PPV program pur chases. 3 Select another lock or limit to set, or go to step 4.
52 Locking Y our System T o lock an unlocked system: 1 Select LOCK from the Set Locks and Limits scr een. 2 Enter a four-digit passcode number . Use the 0-9 buttons to enter the numerical value. Each number you enter appears as an asterisk ( ), which keeps your passcode secret.
53 Unlocking Y our System T o unlock a locked system: 1 Select LOCKS AND LIMITS from the Options Menu. The Set Locks and Limits screen appears, with the curr ent settings shown next to each button. The padlock ( ) indicates that the system is currently locked.
54 Setting Up a List of Custom Stations If there ar e stations listed in the Master Guide that you don’t subscribe to or watch often, you can use the Custom Stations feature to specify which stations from the Master Guide you want to skip.
55 Using the A UT O Skip Featur e When you select the AUTO button, the Digital Satellite Receiver automatically scans all the stations in the current Master Guide. During this scanning process, the Digital Satellite Receiver determines which stations you are not authorized to watch and then sets these stations to be skipped.
56 Setting Audio Options Y our program pr oviders may broadcast multiple audio tracks with a single video source. For example, a football game might use a dif ferent audio track for each sports commentator or a movie might include Dolby Digital sound as well as both English and Spanish language audio tracks.
57 4 T o change the audio track for the current pr ogram, select an audio track. T o change the default language for all programs, select DEF AUL T . Then see “Setting a Default Language” below . T o change the default Dolby Digital setting, select DOLBY DIGIT AL.
58 Setting Dolby Digital (SA T -A4 only) Use the DOLBY DIGIT AL button to select the default setting for receiving Dolby Digital sound. This setting determines the output fr om the DIGIT AL OUT terminal only . The AUDIO out jacks do not output Dolby Digital signals.
59 Reading Y our Messages Occasionally , your program providers will send messages to your Digital Satellite Receiver . These messages contain useful information about your system, such as information about new services, program promotions, or billing.
60 Reading a Message T o read a message: 1 Select the envelope from the Messages scr een. A selected message appears with a checkmark ( ü ) beside it. Then select READ. The full text of the message appears. 2 T o erase a message after you’ve read it, select ERASE.
61 Selecting Data Services In the future, your pr ogram providers may provide data services, which you can access through specific stations using the Digital Satellite Receiver ’s low-speed data port. For details about using a data port to access these data services, call your program pr oviders.
62 3 Select one of the following: Changing the Default Data Service Use the DEF AUL T button to select a default data service for all stations that provide data services. T o change the data service for all stations: 1 Select DEF AUL T from the Data Services screen.
63 Chapter 6 Using the Setup Menu Read this chapter to set up your Digital Satellite Receiver for the first time, check the antenna’s signal strength, or to r un a system test to diagnose any difficulties you may be having with your system. Overview The Setup Menu includes several options you can use to set up and troubleshoot your system.
64 Displaying the Setup Menu T o set up your system, first bring up the Setup Menu, as follows: 1 Press the MENU button to bring up the Main Menu. 2 Select SETUP MENU. 3 The Setup Menu appears: The following pages describe how to use the Setup Menu to set up your system.
65 Setting Up the Satellite Dish Antenna T o install the Satellite Antenna, or to check the current signal level of the antenna, use the Set Up Antenna screen.
66 VCR Recording After hooking up your IR Blaster (see “Connecting the IR Blaster” on page 18 for details), you must identify and set the manufacturer and code type of your VCR. After doing this, you should perform an IR test to ensure that all of your VCR functions ar e working properly .
67 3 After selecting the manufacturer , select the CODE type of your VCR. 4 Select TEST to determine if the POWER ON/OFF , RECORD and STOP functions of your VCR are working properly .
68 Replacing Y our Access Card In the event that your program pr oviders need to send you a new access card, use the Access Card option to initialize your new car d. During this process, you’ll follow the on-scr een instructions to copy information from the old car d onto the new card.
69 3 Select OK from the Replace Access Card scr een. 4 Follow the instructions as they ar e displayed to complete the procedur e. When the message “Replace Access Card Procedur e Complete” appears, select OK to return to the Setup Menu. RETURN REPLACE A CCESS CARD Please insert OLD access card and select OK to initialize NEW card.
70 Setting the Aspect Ratio Use the Aspect Ratio option to set the Digital Satellite Receiver ’s display to match your TV’s picture. T o set the aspect ratio: 1 Select ASPECT RA TIO from the Setup Menu. 2 Select one of the options, based on the type of TV you have: q If you have a standard TV , select 4:3.
71 Setting Up the Remote Control (SA T -A4 Only) The Set Up Remote screens let you set up the Digital Satellite Receiver to accept IR (infrared) or RF (radio fr equency) signals from the remote control and to change the RF security code for the Digital Satellite Receiver .
72 Setting the Security Code (SA T -A4 Only) If the Digital Satellite Receiver is accepting or receiving signals fr om another RF remote contr ol in your home (or from a neighbor ’s house), you can eliminate this problem by changing the security codes for the Digital Satellite Receiver and remote contr ol.
73 Step 2: Set the Remote Control’ s RF Security Code 1 Press the CODE SET button on the r emote control. 2 Using the number buttons on the remote contr ol, enter the three- digit security code you selected for the Digital Satellite Receiver in step 2 on page 72.
74 Displaying the Progr ammable Codes Y ou can also use the Setup Remote screen to display a list of codes you can use to program the r emote control to operate other components, such as TVs and VCRs. 81 Using the Remote Control After you’ve installed the batteries and programmed the r emote control, use these pr ocedures to operate your system components: The FUNCTION buttons flash to indicate which component the remote contr ol is set to operate.
82 TV Switches the input of the TV . SA T Switches the output of the Digital Satellite Receiver to TV (normal TV programs), if you’ve connected a TV cable or antenna, or to SA T programs. SA T TV SA T : Used to tune to and set stations in the Jump Loop (SA T).

An important point after buying a device Sony SAT-A4 (or even before the purchase) is to read its user manual. We should do this for several simple reasons:
If you have not bought Sony SAT-A4 yet, this is a good time to familiarize yourself with the basic data on the product. First of all view first pages of the manual, you can find above. You should find there the most important technical data Sony SAT-A4 - thus you can check whether the hardware meets your expectations. When delving into next pages of the user manual, Sony SAT-A4 you will learn all the available features of the product, as well as information on its operation. The information that you get Sony SAT-A4 will certainly help you make a decision on the purchase.
If you already are a holder of Sony SAT-A4, but have not read the manual yet, you should do it for the reasons described above. You will learn then if you properly used the available features, and whether you have not made any mistakes, which can shorten the lifetime Sony SAT-A4.
