2 Momentus XT Produc t Manual, Rev. D 2.0 Introduction This manual describes the functiona l, mechanical an d interface specifications for the following Seagate Momentus ® XT model drives: These drives provide the following key fea t ures: • 7200-RPM spindle spee d.
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 3 2.1 About the Serial A T A interface The Serial A T A interface provides several ad vantages over the traditional (p arallel) A T A interf ace. The p rimar y advantages include : • Easy installation and configur ation with true plug-and-p lay connectivit y .
4 Momentus XT Produc t Manual, Rev. D 3.0 Drive specifications Unless otherwise noted, all specific ations are measure d under ambient conditio ns, at 25°C, and nominal power . 3.1 Spec ification summary table The specifications listed in this tabl e are for quick reference.
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 5 * One Gbyt e equals one billion bytes when r eferring to hard driv e capacity. Accessible capacity may vary depending on operating environment and formatting. **During periods of drive idle, some offlin e activity may occur acco rding to the S.

D 7 3.3 Default logical geometry Cylinders Read/write heads Sectors per track 16,383 16 63 LBA mode When addressing these drives in LBA mode, all bloc ks (sectors) are consecutively numbered from 0 to n–1, where n is the number of guara nteed sectors as defined above .
8 Momentus XT Product M anual, Rev. D 3.7 Seek time Seek measurement s are t aken with nominal p ower at 25°C ambient tempera ture. All times a re measured using drive diagnostics. The specifications in th e table below are defined as follows: • T rack-to-track seek time is an average of al l possible single-track seeks in both direction s .
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 9 • Idle mode power Idle mode power is measur ed with the drive up to sp eed, with ser v o electronics active and with the heads in a random track location .

Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 11 3.9.2 C onducted noise Input noise ripp le is meas ured at the host sys tem po we r supply across an equivalent 15-ohm resistive load on the +5V line. Using 5V power , the drive is expe cted to oper ate with a max imum of 100 mV peak-to-pe ak square-w ave injected nois e at up to 10 MHz.
12 Momentus XT Product Manual, Rev. D • Idle and Standby timers Each time the drive performs an Active function (read, write or seek), the standby timer is reinitialized and begins coun ting down from its spec ified delay times to zero.
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 13 3.10.6.2 Nonoperating shock The nonoperatin g shock level that the drive can exper ience with out incurring physical d amage or degradation in performance when subsequen tly put into ope ration is 800 Gs based on a nonr epetitive half-sin e shock pulse of 2 ms duration.
14 Momentus XT Product Manual, Rev. D 3.12 Electromagnetic immunity When properly installed in a represen tative host system , the drive operates without errors or degr adation in performance when subjected to the radio frequency (RF) environment s defined in the following table: 3.
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 15 3.14 Agency certification 3.14.1 Safety certification The drives are reco gnized in accordance with UL 60950-1 and CSA C22.2 (950 ) and meet all applicable sec- tions of IEC 60950-1 and EN60950 -1 as tested by TUV North America.
16 Momentus XT Product Manual, Rev. D 3.14.3 FCC verificatio n These drives are intended to be con t ained solely within a person al com puter o r similar e nclosure ( not att ached as an external device). As such, each drive is consider ed to be a subasse mbly even when it is individually mar- keted to the customer .
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 17 3.15.2 China Restriction of Hazardous Subst ances (RoHS) Directive This product has an Environ mental Protection Use Pe riod (EPUP) of 20 years.
18 Momentus XT Product Manual, Rev. D 4.0 Configuring and mounting the dri v e This section contains the specif ications an d instructions for configuring and mounting the drive.
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 19 4.2 Configuring the drive Each drive on the Ser ial A T A interface connects in a point-to-point configuration with the Serial A T A host adapter . There is no master/slave rela tionship because each drive is consid ered a master in a point-to-point relationships.
20 Momentus XT Product Manual, Rev. D 4.4 Drive mounting Y ou can mount the drive using four screws in the side-mo un ting holes or four screws in the bottom-mounting holes. See Figure 3 for drive mounting dimensions. Follow these important mountin g precautions when mount- ing the drive: • Allow a minimum clearance of 0.
Momentus XT Product Manual , Rev. D 21 5.0 Serial A T A (SA T A) interface These drives use the industry-s tandard Ser ial A T A interfac e that supp orts FIS data transfers. It suppor ts A T A programmed inpu t/output (PIO) modes 0–4; multiword DMA modes 0 –2, and Ultra DMA modes 0–6.
22 Momentus XT Product Manual, Rev. D 5.2 Serial A T A device plug conn ector pin definitions T able 7 summarizes the signals on the Seri al A T A interface and power connecto rs. 1. All pins are in a single row , with a 1.27 mm (0.050”) pitch. 2. The comment s on the mating sequence a pply to the case of backplane blindmate connector only .
