3 Setting Up Your Scanner Setting up your s canner i s easy — just follow the s imple ste ps in this book in the order listed below. 1. Unpack and choose a place for your scanner. 2. Unlock an d initial ize the s canner. 3. Connect the scanner to your computer .
4 Setting Up Your Scanner Choose a Good Place for Your Scanner Here are s ome points to consi der: ■ Place the scanner on a fl at, stable surface. If the scanner is til ted, it can’t operate prop erly .
Setting Up Your Scanner 5 Unlock and Initialize the Scanner Befor e conn ecting the s canner to a po wer sourc e, you must re lease the tra nspor tatio n lock on the back of the scanner. Before conne cting the scanner to your compute r, follow th e steps belo w to make sure the scan ner i s operati ng properly.
6 Setting Up Your Scanner 5. Make sure the carriage moves slightly and the fluoresce nt lamp on the carriage comes on. Wh en the in dicator l ight sta ys green , the s canner has co mplet ed its init ializat ion. If the scanne r does not work a s described, make sure the power cord is firmly plugged in, an d th en tr y aga in.
Setting Up Your Scanner 7 Connect the Scanner to Your Computer Make sure your computer meets the system require ments listed on page 57 or 58. If you are connecting to a PC, Windows ® must be factory preinstall ed on your system and a buil t-in USB po rt must be av ailable.
8 Setting Up Your Scanner Install the EPSON TWAIN Driver The scanner comes with two CD-ROMs: a scanner software CD-ROM with your EPSON TWAIN driver, scanner software, and electronic documentation and another CD-ROM with Adobe PhotoDe luxe. ® Use the scanner software CD-ROM to install EPSON TWAIN.

48 Problem Solving You need to reinstall EPSON TWAIN in Windows. You must fi rst unins tall your scanne r as de scribed a bove. 1. Insert your scan ner CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. 2. Double-click My Computer , then double-cli ck the CD-ROM ico n. The CD-ROM window opens.
Problem Solving 49 Scanning P roblems The file size is too big. Adjust your scan se ttings. Try selecting a lower resolution (dpi), or scan o nly part of the i mage. Your scanned image is faint or has gaps. ■ Check the bri ghtne ss set ting. Decrease the software or driver’s brightne ss sett ing.
50 Problem Solving Your scanned image is blurred or disto rted. ■ Check the p ositi on an d conditio n of your document. Make sure the document is placed fl at against the scanne r’s document table gl ass. If only part of the ima ge is blurred, part of your document may be wrinkled or warped.
Problem Solving 51 The edges of the docum ent are not scanned. ■ Check the po sition of yo ur source document . Adjust your document’s position so that the ima ge is w ithin the g lass ar ea. ■ The document table has non-reada ble areas around the edges.
